If you guessed Summer Sore, you got it right! Tech Madi is here to break down what they are and how to manage them.
What are they?
A "summer sore," or Habronemiasis, is an inflammatory skin reaction to the larvae of the stomach worm (Habronema). These larvae are transmitted by flies. When a fly lands on an existing wound or moist area of the skin to feed, the larvae are deposited and burrow into the tissue, causing an intense, itchy reaction that prevents healing.
How can we prevent them?
Prevention is key and focuses on fly control!
✅ Fly Management: Use a comprehensive fly control program (fly masks, sheets, traps, and premise sprays).
✅ Manure Management: Regularly clean stalls and dispose of manure to reduce fly breeding grounds.
✅ Wound Care: Clean any open wounds promptly and thoroughly to avoid attracting flies.
✅ Deworming: Work with us on a strategic deworming schedule that includes treatment for stomach worms.
