If you guessed Summer Sore, you got it right! Tech Madi is here to break down what they are and how to manage them.

What are they?
A "summer sore," or Habronemiasis, is an inflammatory skin reaction to the larvae of the stomach worm (Habronema). These larvae are transmitted by flies. When a fly lands on an existing wound or moist area of the skin to feed, the larvae are deposited and burrow into the tissue, causing an intense, itchy reaction that prevents healing.

How can we prevent them?
Prevention is key and focuses on fly control!
✅ Fly Management: Use a comprehensive fly control program (fly masks, sheets, traps, and premise sprays).
✅ Manure Management: Regularly clean stalls and dispose of manure to reduce fly breeding grounds.
✅ Wound Care: Clean any open wounds promptly and thoroughly to avoid attracting flies.
✅ Deworming: Work with us on a strategic deworming schedule that includes treatment for stomach worms.

If you suspect your horse has a summer sore, give us a call! Early and aggressive treatment is crucial for resolution.

The relationship between a veterinarian and a farrier is one of the most critical partnerships in equine care. When we combine our diagnostic tools and medical knowledge with a farrier's hands-on expertise, we can create powerful solutions for everything from complex lameness cases to routine hoof maintenance.

We value this collaboration immensely and are grateful for the open communication and mutual respect we share with our farrier colleagues. Together, we keep your horses standing strong.

Meet Gussie—the tiniest fighter with the biggest heart! 🐐💛

At just 2 days old, Gussie wasn’t keeping up with her siblings. Her owners were concerned something serious might be wrong—so they brought her in to see Dr. Grimes.

With triplets in the womb, we suspect Gussie’s leg trouble was caused by cramped quarters before birth. After taking radiographs to rule out any fractures, she was diagnosed with tendon laxity in one of her legs.

Thanks to a short-term splint, a dedicated owner, and a little at-home physical therapy, Gussie made a full recovery—and was walking happily just days later!

🐾 Watching her progress from wobbly to wild in just a week is exactly why we love what we do. Great job, Gussie!

Did anyone guess castration in our last post? If so—you're correct! 🐑

This little lamb recently underwent a routine castration, a common procedure that helps prevent unwanted breeding and reduces behavioral issues down the line. (If you’ve ever met an intact male goat, you definitely understand why this matters!)

🧠 Fun fact: Male goats should be at least 4 months old before castration to allow the urethra to fully dilate—minimizing risk of future complications. Lambs, however, can be castrated at a much younger age.

🐐 Quick health tip:

-Both sheep and goats should receive their first CDT vaccine at 6–8 weeks old, followed by a booster three weeks later.
-Sheep need an annual CDT booster.
-Goats should be boosted every 6 months.
-And don’t forget—rabies vaccines are recommended annually for both!

Have questions about routine care for your small ruminants? We’re here to help keep your herd healthy and happy—reach out any time!
