Part 4 of our series 🐾 Our philosophy on dog grooming and maneuvering some of the challenges!

Dog grooming is quite an adventure at times 😆 Different personalities, the dog's nerves, and familiarity with grooming tools and practices (to name a few) can create quite a busy personality on the grooming table 😜 We believe the dog's safety, both physically and emotionally, is top priority! The more often a dog is groomed professionally, they become more comfortable with the routine and a rapport of trust and confidence is built between the groomer and the dog, creating a more positive experience.

We believe in quality over quantity! Scheduling an ample time block allows for the dog to acclimate, and sometimes even play with the daycare & boarding kiddos to burn off extra energy. We make sure needs are met, offering treats on occasion, fresh bottled water to hydrate, and potty time. Sometimes slowing the process and giving a dog breaks is needed, and that is perfectly fine by us!

As the groomer, I am sure to center myself before dog grooming, ensuring I have had meals, praying to clear my mind, and asking God to guide us through the process positively. Finally, the needs to know I will lead them through the process and they can trust me. I use firm, short cues similar to my practices in .

Happy 🐾 Today in our series, let's talk about full doggie haircuts! When you bring your to , we will explore the different options for your dog's haircut, and consider what works best for the time you have to maintain grooming at home like daily brushing. A dog with long hair (curly or straight) does not have to be shaved. We can go shorter in the areas that typically cause knots and mats, and longer in the more visible areas to highlight their structure. Together we can plan your dog's haircut to be full of style and exceed your expectations!

Regardless of haircut, we'll emphasize those cute faces and clean out the inner corners of the eyes. This is where tear build-up can leave stains on your dog. The lighter the coat, the more obvious the stain. If your dog has excessive staining, it is worth checking with the vet for underlying issues such as allergies and clogged tear ducts.

We continue our series on this 🐾 Training your for grooming and preventing fear through the process!

A common issue we see from both a training and grooming perspective are nails that are too long! I hear from people, or I experience while grooming, dogs that have issue tolerating a nail trim. So how do you prevent this? Start when they are puppies (see more below).Your dog is past the puppy stage? You can desensitize an older dog as well. Start with a daily trim, or dremel with just one nail. Work up to two nails, then a whole paw.

Trimming a dog's nails is crucial because long nails can cause pain, discomfort, and potential injuries by affecting their gait, traction, and even paw structure, leading to issues like joint strain, deformed feet, and difficulty walking, especially on slippery surfaces; regular trims prevent these problems and promote overall health and well-being for your dog. The photo from our post shows a dog with nails a little longer than 2". This dog tripped often and had become become flat-footed.

Dog grooming in general is beneficial to all dogs of any coat type. Regular grooming promotes a healthy coat and skin.

Important! Bring your puppy to the groomers early. takes puppies as young as 8 weeks old with their first round of and Bordetella! Here is how you can help acclimate your puppy to the grooming process:

🐾 Gently touch paws, ears and mouth daily. This will desensitize your puppy.
🐾 Introduce your puppy to baths, making the activity pleasant with a calm voice and ensuring the water is warm. Only bathe once per week to prevent dry skin.
🐾 Keep your puppy on a regular dog grooming schedule so they are familiar with their groomer.

We LOVE our 🐾 but do we love their shedding fur? Check out this post about DE-SHEDDING! Also - we'll explain the measuring cup graphic 🤪 Hint! If you filled those cups with wet hair, let it dry, and then toss into your living room....well if you aren't getting your dog de-shed at Beachy Dogs all that fur is accumulating in your house!

This week will be posting a series of posts, and the different processes that make regular grooming so beneficial to 🐾

Sweet Grady is a regular at Beachy Dogs and all ❤️ after his de-shedding 😍

First, Grady is a double-coated breed. These guys regulate their temperature via the undercoat. During the summer the undercoat catches cooler air and cools the skin. During the winter, the undercoat captures warmer air and warms the skin. ***IMPORTANT*** 🚧 If a double-coated dog is shaved, thair natural process for temperature-control is comopromised and they actually are at greater risk for overheating during the summer and suffering from hypothermia during the winter!
*** Also good to remember, dogs shed more than just twice a year. They are always shedding (sometimes in greater quantities) and growing new hair!

What are the benefits of de-shedding?
🐾 You will experience less hair floating around your house and landing on your floors and furniture! Our clients that bring their every 4-6 weeks for a thorough de-shed at Beachy Dogs see best results.
🐾 Regular de-shedding promotes healthier skin and coat, as well as supports proper temperature regulation.
🐾 While de-shedding is not a hair cut, your dog will appear more tidy as if they just had a hair cut :)
🐾 If you are wondering which breeds benefit - short and long haired dogs! In fact if you struggle with dog fur clean-up in your house, your dog will benefit by regular de-shedding!

When arrive at Beachy Dogs for a de-shed here is what happens:

We are actively de-shedding through multiple processes; in the bath, during drying, and in the dry de-shedding!

The bath isn't just a bath!! The is first rinsed and latherd in a de-shedding shampoo. Using a de-shed rake, we work the shampoo down to the skin, simultaneously grabbing loose hair with the rake. In fact, we use the rake with each application to work in product and pull loose hair, and to clear the product from the coat when rinsing. We continue the process using a de-shedding conditioner, this time using a slicker brush to gently brush through the coat and catch more loose undercoat. The 3rd step, we close up the hair folicles with a shampoo (not designed for de-shedding) and rinse thoroughly.

Why do we start the de-shed in the ?
🐾 We are making use of the warm water that helps open the hair follicle to promote shedding of hair ready to come out.
🐾 The shampoo offers lubrication for the loose undercoat stuck in the guard hairs (top coat), making the brushing process much more enjoyable for your dog - dogs look relieved (even the ones that don't like being brushed!)
🐾 Wet hair doesn't fly up and land right back on your dog like when you brush dry fur.
🐾 It helps clear the way during the drying process (the part the dogs enjoy least, well, least next to nail clipping 😆) and the dog dries quicker!
🐾 That measuring cup graphic? While de-shedding Grady during the bathing process, we measured all that wet hair. We were able to fill 6 heaping cups of WET HAIR; in the bath alone! 🐾

Next, we are onto the drying process! We use a high-powered dog grooming hair dryer, and simultaneously & gently run a rake through the coat. This helps push out the stubborn loose undercoat hanging out withe the top coat.

We conclud the de-shedding process using special de-shedding tools, followed by "carding" the coat to pull any last bit of undercoat loose and lurking under, and in, the top coat :)

Is this a long process? Yes, but we are all about QUALITY over quantity, every time!!

There's more with this service! Dogs have the ears cleaned, nails trimmed up and filed, paw pads cleared, and a scissored trim of the fur for a pet trim (as needed)! For a small addiitional fee, you can add in tooth brushing! 🪥
