How to get your horse to cool down quickly 🥵☀️

How to get your horse to cool down quickly 🥵☀️

"Cool" hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn't mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse's heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend's body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse's individual situation.

HAPPY ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS DAY

We can not thank our support staff enough, because that is exactly what they do...support. From taking care of schedules and health certificates, to pre-purchase exams and blood work they make this practice run smoothly.

Always greeting clients, vets, and techs with a smile in the morning they are the best way to start the day! From a quick joke or a hug when needed they make sure everyone is out the door on the right foot.

Thank you, Pauline, Kelly, Allison, Bryn, and Brandy for all that you do for us ❤

Dr. Buchholz traveled to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine last week to speak with a group of future veterinarians. Having been with our practice for 24 years she had a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with them.

We are always happy to come and speak to 4H clubs, camps, riding teams, and groups about being an Equine Ambulatory Veterinarian.

HOOF PUNCTURE WOUNDS

Puncture Wounds in the foot are always considered an emergency. This typically happens when a horse has stepped on a sharp object such as a nail.

The first instinct for many owners is to remove the object but DO NOT REMOVE THE OBJECT FROM THE FOOT. We tell you this because we want to know what structures within the foot may of been penetrated and how to best move forward with treatment.

Dr. Fraysier and Phil had the perfect opportunity to show you exactly why we tell you to call us before removing anything from the foot.

Dr. Fraysier found a screw in her tire, and she knew that the screw could have penetrated deep within the tire wall. Removal of the screw could result in a flat. Imaging revealed the screw had not penetrated too deeply and no further treatment was needed, but from the outside you are not able to know this.

Luckily for Dr. Fraysier with some quick work by Phil the screw was removed and she was back on the road.
