I want to return to the subject of “Bean” again today. As I mentioned the other day, Bean had two or three trees she really favored and where she spent a lot of her time. Today’s photo shows Bean in her absolute favorite tree resting on her much-preferred branch. I literally stood for hours on several occasions and just watched her sleep – waiting for her to open her eyes or move about just a little bit. I took a few hundred photos of her in this exact location. In today’s photo she had just woken-up from an hour-long nap and was reaching up, grabbing the little broken limb, and stretching a bit. Moments like this made the wait worthwhile (I will share more photos of Bean in this exact location in the future).

The reason Bean is on my mind this morning is because I received a message from Steph in Minnesota that Bean and her new family (Maybelline and her four cubs) have apparently left together and are no longer being seen. This is good news as it sounds like Maybelline is probably moving her family to her traditional denning area (wherever that may be) in preparation for the long winter ahead. I suspect we will know nothing more until next spring or early summer when the entire family will hopefully return. So, for the next six months or so, I will envision Bean curled-up tight and sleeping with her newly adopted family all snuggly in their cozy, fluff-laden den. Ohhhh, life is good. (ACA3063)

In case you might be wondering....this is a photo of the newborn bison calf who was accidentally pushed into the Firehole River by his mother. His story was featured in the chapter, "The First Hour of Life". Thankfully the calf survived, but it was terrifying to watch for those few moments that he struggled in the water. I think Steve and I held our breath the entire time.

Well, this will be my last post for the next five to six weeks as I head off to spend the next month or so with the bears I love so much. I love hanging out with my friends. I will be collecting new images and of course, the stories behind them to share with you all upon my return.

Thank you for the great feedback so many of you provide and the love so many of have for bears. Most of all, PLEASE help a friend to understand bears. Friends don't let friends go along in life without knowing the truth about bears. We must teach them!

Till later - please take care. Bye now.

Continuing last night's story about The Mom With Four Cubs and her extra tiny cub, this very special mom certainly seemed to understand she had a "special needs" baby. Nearly every time I saw The Mom With Four Cubs lay down she would almost always cradle her tiniest cub in her front arms.

I will never forget this particular morning when I took tonight's photo. It was early spring and mama was on a very steep hillside with her four cubs. She was on the uphill side of a huge yellow poplar tree, where a rather small flat area had formed (as often is the case uphill of a large tree on a steep slope). I imagine her cubs, at least three of them, had spent the night in the limbs and branches of this tree high above her resting spot. You can see in the photo how she was cradling her tiny baby, which I thought was especially endearing. I suspect she had spent the night right there with her little cub curled-up within her protective arms. But what struck me most at this particular time was how she was just looking-out off this hillside into the distance with a distinct far-away look in her eyes. It was like she was in deep thought - in another world. I have no way of knowing, but at the time and subsequently, I have always believed she was thinking about the welfare of the tiny cub she was embracing. I have never seen a bear "so-absent" and deep in thought previously or thereafter. She seemed concerned, but somewhat at peace. The entire situation had a profound effect regarding my thoughts about bears and bear emotions from that time forward.

I will end the week tomorrow night with some parting thoughts about this very very special bear I came to know as the Mom With Four Cubs.

Made a quick trip down to Yellowstone earlier this week. This large male Grizzly put on quite the show for us. Without a doubt the most entertaining Grizzly I've ever encountered..
