Meet SC Rodents Gumdrop Buttons!

Gumdrop Buttons is a purebred Campbells dwarf and is a fun new addition here. I will NOT be breeding dwarfs, but I jumped at the opportunity to see what it was like to have one as a pet at the Hamstery as I’ve owned many Syrians and never had a dwarf. He is SO active and fun to watch and very friendly! I can’t recommend Billy at SC Rodents enough if you’re looking to add one of these guys into your home🙂

This guy is being driven down to his new home via private transport today! I made a modified bin for the trip since I don’t have limitations on having to use a critter keeper for the trip. I think he will be more comfortable for the trip in here🙂

I’m going to miss this guy. He’s always one of the first out to greet me when I do everyone’s food and water. He’s a sweet boy so I’m sure his new owners will love him!

Last night we had a successful pairing with Sundae (golden LH) and Keroppi (het silver grey dominant spot short hair). This will be sundae’s second and most likely her last litter. I’m very excited for this litter and for some dom spot pups!!!

I did not pair Eclair. That is going to have to go on hold for a short time. Here’s why, the male I had hoped to pair her with just isn’t where I want him to be size wise even though he is at breeding age. I will evaluate him again for breeding and make the call whether I will breed him or not in the near future. I do have another male I want to pair Eclair with, but he needs to get a little older first. So, once he is of age I will pair her. I know I had some people wanting pups from Eclair and I was also looking forward to her litter, but I have to do what is best for each pairing here.

The waitlist is open and choice goes in order of the waitlist. If all goes well these pups will be ready for homes in October!

“Keith Jeremiah” and “Captain Crunch” are headed out to their new home this evening❤️ They are going to the same home, but will live separately since Syrian hamsters are solitary animals.
Keith was definitely a favorite of this litter, such a sweet boy with a calm demeanor. Capt. Crunch on the other hand is a fluffy ball of s***k! Their new family will have the best of both worlds with these two.

I’d like to introduce everyone to Bonbon’s Buckeye!

Buckeye had an adopter lined up when he suffered an eye injury at just a few weeks old. He was rushed to get medical care and had daily medications for a little while. Given this circumstance, I did not feel comfortable letting him go to another home, so he is a permanent resident here. He is now 11 weeks old and is thriving and healthy, just minus an eye. He does not let that keep him down though! I always speak to him when cleaning, feeding, or giving enrichment and make sure I put my hand in his enclosure on the side where he can see so I don’t spook him.

This goes to show that with animals everything doesn’t always go the way you plan. Nothing is perfect. You can only prepare for a freak emergency as best as possible and provide medical care when needed. Having animals isn’t always easy and it’s our job to do right by them.

Buckeye is healthy, happy, and will live out his life here at the hamstery!

And, I mean, look at that face, he’s adorable!

Last night we had a successful pairing between Snickerdoodle (cream banded LH) and Tiramisu (homo dingy black LH)🤗 I also wanted to pair Eclair (silver black tort LH), but she was not cycling. I do plan to pair her on her next cycle!

After watching this girl grow out a little I have made the decision to not keep her as a hold back. While I absolutely love her color, het silver grey tort banded, she is not what I’m looking for in terms of confirmation. Confirmation takes first priority in terms of hold backs.

Her personality- she has taken a little longer to come out of her shell than her siblings, but she is sweet. She is a little on the shy side and a late riser, but active once she’s up. She is better suited for a home where she will be handled more by adults or older teens as she seems to be more reserved with kids.

She is from Jujube’s litter and is 7 weeks and 4 days old.

Good morning everyone,

I’ve had a handful of people reach out to me for pups over the last couple days. All of our pups have wonderful homes lined up😊 I put off my next pairing a little as I’m hopefully going to take a vacation soon and I’m trying to plan around that. I hope to make a pairing in the next couple weeks for a litter that would then be ready for homes in October. The waitlist is open for future litters (this can be found in our pinned posts) and I will announce here when I pair hamsters (although there is never a guarantee that the breeding takes).

I breed for quality, not quantity. I will not always have pups available. I really put a lot of effort and thought into each pairing and into each pup. I prefer to be able to give each animal individual attention and care before they leave for their new homes!

I will be taking official pup photos of Jujube’s litter today and sending out those photos to adopters and posting them here. Jujube’s litter has now all been reserved🥰 I am so excited for the pups to have wonderful homes lined up.

This girl went to her new home today! I always love seeing hamsters go to their excited new families❤️

On another note: I only have a few hamsters left out of these two litters. 2 ready now and 3 ready in August. I know I have a couple people who have chosen to wait for my next litter. I’m slightly behind in my next pairing as two litters of pups have been my priority at this time. I do still plan to pair Eclair on her next cycle. (Fun fact- female hamsters cycle every few days!)

I plan to take pup photos of the younger litter hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday. I try to send updates out a couple times a week, but if you are wanting to see your pup shoot me a message and we can make it happen!

Lastly, Thank you to all the adopters who have given these two litters homes or are waiting on their pup to come home! Everyone has been wonderful with their set ups and knowledge of hamster care. Im so happy to see people loving these hamsters as much as I do😊

Meet one of the new additions I picked up yesterday…Winterbell’s Keroppi! He is a het silver grey dominant spot and is our first short haired hamster at the Hamstery😊 He is very young and still growing and is already a very beefy boy!

This girl was supposed to go to her new home today after being chosen 3 weeks ago and unfortunately she is now looking for a new home! She is as sweet as can be and just a chonky little thing. She will climb up onto your hand and loves snacks. If you are ready to bring a sweet loving girl into your home please reach out to me.

Please be willing to provide her with our requirements listed on our care guide. I will not let any pups leave here without a proper home waiting for them🙂

Another side note, if you no longer want your hamster please please communicate with me so I can find them another loving home.

I have quite a few new followers. So, I’d like to take a moment and talk about my breeding practices here.

I work off of the NHC standards for confirmation. That is what I’m striving for when I make selections to breed. I pair hamsters that I hope will balance each other’s faults to produce offspring that have better confirmation than their parents.

When I’m making a pairing I’m also looking for hamsters that have a great natural temperament and hamsters that are cage content. Not a single hamster here displays any stereotypic behaviors. Part of that is genetic and part of that is keeping them content with wheels, foragaing, chews, and other enrichment items.

I also make pairings based on my breeding goals here and what I’m looking to produce color wise. I don’t just put two hamsters together randomly. I pair them because I am expecting certain offspring to further my goals here.

How do I decide who to hold back?

I look at the pups color and confirmation and evaluate if those fit into my program. Pups display natural temperament pretty early on so that is a factor in who I keep also. I really appreciate a pup who is calm for their age (pups definitely have lots of energy and can be quite wiggly just like many other baby animals).

What do I work with here?

I work with mostly silver grey based colors; het and homo silver grey, ivory, dingy black, silver black torts, silver grey torts, and silver grey dom spot (up and coming). I also work with cream, yellow, golden, and golden torts. Coat types I work with are longhair, rex, satin (up and coming), and shorthair (up and coming).

What are my long term goals?

I have a few goals I’m working on currently. In no specific order…one is to improve the Rex coat type. Second is to produce heavily marked tort offspring. Third, to produce hamsters with great confirmation in the colors I’m working with. Forth, is to increase longevity by breeding for health. Fifth, is to continue breeding for natural temperament to produce content, friendly hamsters.
