My number one priority for my personal dogs, especially Maven, when they are this age (under 4 months) is to give them so many opportunities to be off leash, with me, exploring.
I think that dogs that are raised with off leash freedom not being a novelty grow up to be so much more connected with their owners. This age is the best time to introduce this freedom and start building a bond through walks.
There’s nothing like the feeling of a new beginning stirring up inside of you.

Fritz took about a week to settle in but today he came out of his crate playful and affectionate! He went from trying to bite me and screaming any time I reached for him to welcoming the leash being put on and coming to me for attention. I will never rush the settling in process. Some dogs need two days, others need longer. I am very transparent with clients about what kind of timeline to expect from me as far as when training will actually begin in my board and train programs. If I think a dog needs more time to settle in, I limit how many training goals we try to accomplish in their stay. A dog like Fritz still benefits greatly from being in a new environment with new people and having to conquer everyday tasks. Even if what I have done with him doesn’t look like “training” it’s all for the goal of creating the right foundation when the actual sessions begin. I can’t train a dog that doesn’t believe me when I tell him I’m trying to help him. I need to build a relationship first.
The language we use surrounding the topic of drive channeling is confusing to folks with lower drive dogs. Saying you can build drive gives the idea that you can create drive out of thin air. Drive potential is genetic. You cannot alter how much drive a dog has. If you could, we'd be able to take any dog from any breeding or shelter and turn them all into world champions in any sport. Instead of thinking about drive as something you can increase, picture it as a pie chart and examine all the places your dog utilizes the drive they do have. Then think of ways you can "reallocate" drive from one category to another. For example, if your dog expends a lot of energy disengaging in between reps in a training session, ask them to lay down and wait until you are ready for your next rep. If they spend a lot of time free running and exploring their environment and don't naturally engage with you, take some time away from that activity and bond through play and easy training sessions.
Do you live too far away to see me regularly but you still want to train with me? I have a few options! Let me breakdown each one.

🐾 Virtual Consultations: $60/hour - Typically these consultations are focused more around deep diving into a discussion about various topics. Most commonly I am called to talk about behavior modification (reactivity, aggression, guarding behaviors, etc), habits that a dog has picked up that really baffle an owner and they just need to talk through it, and by young dog trainers who want to talk shop and make sure they are heading in the right direction with their career.

I don’t really track my dogs’ training progress. I don’t really work with them in formal training sessions either so there’s not really any way to organize tracking it. I like to just groove along in our day to day giving them the information they need as they need it. Then you get moments like I had yesterday, walking Bauer to The Farm in a completely loose leash, where all of the sudden you realize you haven’t had to work on something for a long time. The progress just smacks you right in the face out of nowhere.
My morning routine with nine dogs, a foster, and a boarder.
Well I caved and moved all the dogs into the basement. I thought the set up I had would be fine to get us through the winter but it ended up being a pain in the ass to deal with and it made the flow of let outs and feeding harder than it needed to be. With how cold it’s been, the flow being thrown off by a bad set up was enough to send my frustration over the edge most mornings and I decided to redo the whole thing. So far, aside from the dogs having to relearn not to whine every time they hear our voices, the flow is much better like this.
When I got the email about working with Wiley a year ago I knew he was definitely my type of client dog. It was one of those where I knew I’d be walking into a conversation I’ve had a thousand times. A type of conversation that I think I’m especially good at - understanding and changing perspective about aggression in adolescent dogs. Add in that they had worked with two other trainers before coming to me and I was giddy at the opportunity to share my knowledge. He is definitely the type of dog that I think a lot of other dog trainers misjudge but are my bread and butter. Now don’t get me wrong, Wiley is definitely a little more f**ked in the head than your average dog. He is a dog that takes medication for his behavior and has very dedicated owners who know how to keep him in the right headspace but he has come very far and is an easier dog to live with now. His owners worried that their ability to travel would be affected by his behavior because they wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving him with anyone. He is one of the easiest boarding dogs I have. I look forward to having him come stay with me. He’s a city dog who is typically limited to leashed walks only but out here he won’t see a leash or a fence for the next three weeks! He loves coming out and being a farm dog, his owners love that they can relax and enjoy their trip because they know he’s safe, and I love that I can provide this opportunity for all of them.
