Why is object neutrality so important? Here you see a video of the Service Dog, that I am working working on his object neutrality it is important for a Service Dog to feel comfortable and neutral about any object that the handler is holding whether it be a big box, a bag, a purse, or anything that the handler must have at their side These objects can bump into the dog, make noise and disrupt their path of travel. The dog must learn to feel neutral about these objects and figure his way around them while assisting the handler. It is so important for dog to feel comfortable and neutral about situations around them, because the handler has so much going on either physically or emotionally that they cannot worry about the dog. Furthermore, object and environmental neutrality is important for puppies and pet dogs as it creates a dog that is more confident about his environment. Often time we see dogs that may get scared of a trashcan may get scared of a car moving may get scared of a truck making lots of noise. Sometimes this can develop into serious behavioral issues or it can leave the dog in a state of stress constantly it’s important to build on neutrality when dogs are young and to show them that they can navigate through the world with confidence and ease. 10 month old SDIT OUZO. She is a Bouvier de Flanders. A stocky terrier type breed similar to a giant schnauzer. She’s been an absolute DELIGHT to train. The reason we picked OUZO is she develops a deep bond with her handler. When she was 5 weeks old we tested her (with her breeder) to see which puppy would follow the breeder the longest and farthest and it was her. She LOVES her people. We always look for a dog that NATURALLY had a desire to be with their human. I have been raising Ouzo since she was 8weeks old in my own home. She’s been a goofy, spunky happy and loving girl. What does socialization look like? THIS Track your dog to be NEUTRAL around other dogs!! Milo came to us with some pretty SERIOUS on leash aggression to both humans and dogs. It took me a LONG time just to get him to feel comfortable with me putting the leash on let alone break the ice enough to work on some environmental neutrality and human neutrality. He would bite the leash, bite me, lunge jump, spin bark and wouldn’t take any food from me for the first two weeks. Using balanced training and under who he was now he walks better, no more reacting a leash biting (or me) and has enough focus and confidence to SIT next to another dog. Service dog Sadie takes a trip to New York City Part of service dog training is making sure the dogs feel comfort in all types of public settings and can listen very well. Last week a client of mine needed some help preparing their dog for an overseas trip. We used New York Penn Station as our practice ground as it is VERY similar to the airport. Their dog Bombòm (pitbull) is working on be neutral to other dogs and being exposed to the busy sites and sounds so she isn’t overwhelmed by her first time in the airport. Sadie continues her work navigating the world and giving Bombòm an excellent reference point of a confident dog AND helping her remain obedient around other dogs. New sites and sounds are difficult for some dogs and it’s our job as owners or trainers to help them navigate the world with confidence and clarity Good work Sadie and Bombòm!

Is your recall reliable? Does your dog understand he MUST come back when called, no if, ands or buts? Too many dogs are lost and even killed when they run away and don’t respond when called. I’m bless to work in a field where the learning never stops. There is always something new, interesting and exciting to discover. Knowledge helps you add tools into your tool let, experience teaches you how and when to use those tools. In this video we discussed the different types of drives a dog has and how they relate to different forms of aggression, utilizing practical experiences and examples from dogs we have trained in the past and opened up for a deep discussion on how and why the mechanisms of aggression activate. My advice; Just because you never learned in a formal setting doesn’t mean you’re stupid or uneducated. On the job training is just as valid as formal academic training.

The down is implied and imperative to the fulfillment of the command. Next we teach him it’s not just a specific area, it’s the pad itself!!
