Just incase you didn’t know, we love our mini horses here at Kellems farm. But don’t be fooled by their size. They take the same amount of time and work to care for as a full sized horse. We pride ourselves in making sure they get the same amount and quality of care as all of the other horses on our farm.

I think it’s safe to say that the horses are enjoying our footing change in the dry lot. Honey sat extra long after her roll to enjoy the softness 😂

Did you know that on our farm every horse is on a customized diet. No horse eats the same thing. Sarah and JoAnna are always working to make sure their horses are getting the best diet possible. We are forage based, which means we have everyone on a zero grain diet, and everything they eat is grass based which is closer to natural for them. We have some very specialized diets that help support the treatment of navicular disease, Cushings disease, insulin dysregulation, and diets that help keep our miniatures slim and trim. We are always researching and learning, and will change things based on each horses need.

Today coco made another visit to the vet. She’s got a few corneal ulcers and abrasions from itching her eye. Stupid allergies! I’m so thankful for the realationship that we have with Miamitown Equine Veterinary Services and for their new haul in facility. It makes things like this so convenient and a little more affordable. Wondering how your horse is handling the sugars in the spring grass? Getting a baseline insulin blood test is a great screening tool to catch Insulin Dysregulation, even in horses who may look outwardly normal.

Insulin Dysregulation is a serious metabolic concern that can lead to laminitis. While it is most common in overweight/cresty neck horses, it can happen in horses who are at ideal body condition or even thin.

We recommend baseline insulin tests for all horses, because we always want to try to catch issues early before they become big (painful and expensive) problems!

JoAnna here! In April Coco was diagnosed with Cushings disease. I was terrified and devastated. If you don’t know what Cushings disease in horses is, it is also knows as Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). It is believed that the condition is caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland which cause hormonal imbalances that cause an array of health issues. Cushings is a progressive disease, but thankfully there is a medication to help slow it down. Coco is responding very well to the medication and to all of our other interventions. She’s finally acting like her self again, and has lost about 150 pounds. I’m hoping for my girl to live out a full life just like any other horse, and we will do everything in our power to make sure that she does. Here are some pictures of her progress. The first picture is from March and the second is from a few days ago. She has lost most of her fat pockets, and is developing more muscle. She also lost most of her winter coat, and only needed help with her belly and legs. I am so thankful for Miamitown Equine Veterinary Services for all of the help and advice they have provided through this difficult time.
