Everyone always asks, "what's the key to having a calm, stable, obedient dog?" There are many factors that go into this, but I'll give you my top 3.
1st: choosing the right breed for your lifestyle.
If you like to be on the go by hiking and being active, a basset hound or shih zhu probably won't keep up!
If you like to stay home and watch tv, a healer or border collie will more than likely drive you a little crazy!
2nd: Consistency. If you are facing unwanted behaviors, but are not consistent in disagreeing, your pup will not understand. At the beginning of training, if you do not affirm wanted behaviors, they may not understand. Whether you have recently added a new family member or you've had your pup for a few years, CONSISTENCY is the key!
3rd: Time. Whether it's 10 minutes or 10 hours a day. Every interaction you have, they are learning something. It may take 1 minute to teach to sit, but it can take 10 days of consistent training to teach a dog to ignore others on your walk.
Just a reminder! Dogs are a direct reflection of their owners!
