The Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA provides easy pet adoption services in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. We are a registered 501(c)(3) private nonprofit animal welfare organization providing animal sheltering services for the City of Harrisonburg and County of Rockingham. We are not affiliated with nor receiving on going funding any national animal welfare organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the Human Society of the United States (HSUS).

It's and we're celebrating with a staff highlight of one of our favorites, Barnabas!

🐈Here's what Melody had to say about her favorite cat:

"At first glance, Barnaby might come off as a tough cookie. His sleek black fur, striking yellow eyes, and prominent vampire-like fangs give him a fierce presence. However, those who take a moment to get to know him soon discover that there's more to this feline than meets the eye. Barnaby is the embodiment of sweetness wrapped in a tough exterior. His favorite pastime? Lounging in sunbeams, soaking up warmth and tranquility. He has a penchant for napping in the coziest spots, often finding the sunniest patch of the shelter floor. When he's not dozing, he enjoys gentle head scratches and cuddling with anyone willing to give him some attention."

☃️We have over 10 barn cats looking for homes before winter comes in! Could you be their new home?

Our barn cat program seeks to place undomesticated/feral cats in outdoor homes such as farms where they have a warm place to return at night like a barn but can still enjoy being the outdoor cat they are! These cats are fully vetted, including spay/neuter and a microchip!

⏳Stepping back in time to remember how the RHSPCA took root...

Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA got its start in the area thanks to two local women - Eulaila Higgs Simmers and Debbie Direnzo.

Eulaila Higgs Simmers was a lifelong animal lover who understood the need to improve the welfare of animals in Rockingham County. She left a large portion of her estate to meet this need. At the time of her passing in 1971, there wasn't anyone to carry out her wishes.

Debbie Direnzo began helping homeless animals in our area in the 1960s. As word of Debbie's efforts grew, soon so did the need for her work. What started as a small group of dedicated volunteers working out of Debbie's garage led to something much greater. In August 1973, Debbie was able to fulfill Eulaila's wishes, and those of many others, with the creation of the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA as a 501c3 non-profit organization.

They see to the medical needs of all the animals in our care (which can be a lot!), ensuring every animals receives full vetting and is healthy before adoption into their forever homes.

Our tabs on the left indicate the following pages: Adoptable Pets shows pets available for adoption onsite and in foster homes. Lost Pets are reported lost by private citizens. Found Pets are reported found and staying with their finders. Strays in Custody are awaiting pick up by their owner at the RHSPCA. Make lost reports by calling us at (540) 434-5270 or emailing [email protected]. We are an open admission shelter accepting all incoming pets from Rockingham County and Harrisonburg City in beautiful Virginia. While our intake radius is limited, we're happy to help out-of-area adopters find their purr-fect match! Our staff will be happy to help you through each step our adoption process to find your new best friend.

We work with foster homes, limited admission “no kill” rescues, breed-specific rescues, and knowledgeable volunteers and adopters to ensure that as many pets as possible find a home.
