Why do wildlife rehabbers ask people not to feed a baby anything?

It’s not because we want to hog all the fun for ourselves, I promise. It’s because wild orphans aren’t typically healthy enough to digest food, when they are found.

Many are hypothermic. The body can’t even handle water when its temperature is too low. All energy is going to crucial body functions in that state. If the body has to divert energy to digesting, it will likely be fatal.

Many are very dehydrated. Animals can’t digest properly when they are dehydrated. The body pulls water into the intestines to aid with digestion. If there isn’t any water to pull from, this could cause a domino affect of problems.

All wild baby animals require a specific diet and that diet generally isn’t available in local stores. Feeding the wrong milk could cause an upset stomach or worse.

All baby animals need specific amounts of formula calculated by their body weight. The percentage differs depending on the species. The same reason human babies can’t drink cows milk, it isn’t suitable for human babies.

Not every animal can drink from a bottle. The correct instrument must be used to prevent aspiration and over feeding.

🙌🙌🙌Bring me a thin, dehydrated, hypothermic animal and I can probably save it. Feed that same animal before you bring it to me…there’s likely nothing I can do to bring it back. 🎯🎯🎯

So please, don’t feed any wild orphans that you have found this baby season. Keeping them warm is a huge help until you find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. even better don’t touch the babies until you’ve spoke to a licensed rehab… Not googled the info… speak to an actual licensed rehab.

Good morning 😁
I am wondering if anyone could use this for their babies. I bought it originally for the opossums when they were babies, now they are on solid foods and I have this extra, it doesn't expire until December. If you could use it for your baby just let me know ok. It's free😁❤

When bringing wildlife to any wildlife rehabilitator, please keep a few things in mind.

Your state does not pay them to care for wildlife. They are volunteers.

Most people who bring them animals in need will not donate towards that animal’s care.

Raising a single baby raccoon to an adult costs approximately $500, if you consider the formula, vaccines, cleaning supplies, enrichment toys and healthy food when they are weaned. That’s only if the animal doesn’t require extensive medical care.

Raising your average squirrel will cost approximately $150. Baby Cottontails $50. Baby foxes are about $700-$1000 each.

If you can’t donate, they will understand. Believe me - they aren’t in this for the money. They will be happy you cared enough to help the animal and bring it to them.

But if you are able to support your local wildlife rehabilitator, it would be greatly appreciated. They work very hard. During baby season, there is very little sleep. When they aren’t caring for the babies they are generally working a second job or trying to raise funds to care for the little ones in their care. They witness a lot of sad situations and it can be hard for them emotionally.

Send them a note of appreciation. It will mean more than you will ever know. ❤️

Hello everyone,
My wildlife rescue is starting up very soon, and we are in need of donations to purchase things like, Kent wildlife formula, (for all babies) , which can be ordered at Tri County Feeds in NewEra, MI. They will deliver to the rescue free of charge. just some of the things that we use daily are for all of our babies are: Purina dry puppy chow, Wet puppy food, dry kitten chow, wet kitten food, Ge**er rice cereal, Ge**er banana biscuit cookies, Milk bone marrow treats, Ge**er 2nd food baby foods, Pedialyte. The squirrels also like: peanuts in the shell, raw whole pumpkin seeds, pistachios in the shells, all fresh fruits and vegetables are vital to all of our animals diets, And this year we are so happy to announce that we have a new veterinarian on call, this is huge, but will be costly. I will be needing vaccines for the babies, antibiotics, deworming meds, and Syringes. Daily we use, laytex gloves, paper towels, baby bottles, bleach, p*e pads, towels(your old towels work great) dawn dish soap to rid babies of fleas, and other crawly things when they first come in. There are so many different ways to help us help the wildlife babies. either by dropping off your donation here at the rescue, or by mail, or by Deposits at West Shore bank. we have a business account there strictly for the rescue, or by using this donation page am a Non-profit wildlife rescue, with a 501 c3

""I died today.
I was found by a kind, sweet woman who does wildlife rescue.
I was so sick, I could barely open my eyes.
She took me inside, cradling me in her warm arms, and made me warm and comfortable.
I opened my eyes and looked at her and thanked her for making my last few minutes as comfortable as possible.
But I was too sick to keep fighting anymore.
I had eaten a mouse that was poisoned, and it made me very sick.
I closed my yellow eyes for the last time and went somewhere else.
Please, all I ask is never use poison to kill the mice.
Poison kills owls, like me.
All I wanted was a mouse for dinner.

Stop the use of poison for rats or mice.
Live traps are the best to use. Catch and release.
It only takes one share to spread the word." -

Myths Busted: Common Misconceptions About Your Local Trash Panda

Raccoons are fascinating animals that are often misunderstood and shrouded in myth. Here are some common misconceptions about raccoons and the truth behind them:

Myth #1: Raccoons are dirty and carry diseases

It’s true that raccoons can carry diseases, but they are no dirtier than any other wild animal. In fact, raccoons are known for their grooming habits and cleanliness. They are constantly washing their hands (or paws) and cleaning their faces, and will even use tools to groom themselves.

Myth #2: Raccoons are nocturnal

While raccoons are primarily active at night, they are not strictly nocturnal. They are opportunistic feeders and will search for food whenever it is available, including during the day. Raccoons are also more active during the spring and summer months when food is more abundant.

Myth #3: Raccoons are dangerous

Raccoons are wild animals and, like any wild animal, they can be dangerous if they feel threatened. However, raccoons are generally timid and will try to avoid confrontation if possible. As long as you give them space and do not try to approach or handle them, raccoons are not a threat to humans.

Myth #4: Raccoons only eat garbage

While it’s true that raccoons are often attracted to garbage and will scavenge for food in trash cans, they are actually omnivores and have a varied diet. In the wild, raccoons eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects, and small animals. They are also known to raid bird feeders and gardens.

So yesterday I was in my craft room making my Kelly's westshore animal friends shirts for our big fundraiser in July, when a knock came at the front door, so I of course answered it, well there stood a gentleman he asked me if I could tell him more about my animal rescue, and what kind of things are needed, so I told him a few of the things we use on a daily basis, so we get done talking and he leaves, I go back in and continue making my shirts, well a while later I hear another knock at the door, well I answer it and it was that same gentleman, he had come bearing gifts this time, there was almost 100 pounds of dog kibbles for the raccoons, p*e pads, paper towels, baby wipes. . I said all of this to say how thankful I am to the kind people of Oceana County, people who go out of their way to help someone. People aren't all bad and for the most part and just want to help. So remember to always be kind, even if it is just a smile to brighten up someone's day. Thanks to the kind man who brightened up my day, with his kind donation. Love to all🙂❤🐾🐾

Merry Christmas to all of our Family and Friends!!

12/23/2023

I was raised in West Michigan and never once questioned my parent's income, it was never a discussion. We didn't eat a lot of fast food because it was considered a treat, not a food group. We drank Kool-Aid made from water that came from our kitchen sink with real sugar. And juice from a cardboard canister in the frozen section. We ate fried egg sandwiches, fried bologna sandwiches, some even ate tuna (which was in a can, not a pouch), PB&J & grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs(straight out of the fridge), but mostly homemade meals consisting of meat, potatoes, and vegetables, and pot roast or fried chicken on Sundays after church.

We grew up during a time when we mowed lawns, pulled weeds, babysat, helped neighbors with chores to be able to earn our own money. We by no means were given everything we wanted.

We went outside a lot to play, ride bikes, run with friends, play hide and seek, or went swimming. We rarely just sat inside. We drank tap water from the water hose outside, bottled water was unheard of.

You LEARNED from your parents instead of disrespecting them and treating them as if they knew absolutely nothing. What they said was LAW, and you did not question it, and you had better know it!

We watched what we said around our elders because we knew if we DISRESPECTED any grown-up we would get our behinds whipped, it wasn't called abuse, it was called discipline! We held doors, carried groceries, and gave up our seat for an older person without being asked. You didn't hear curse words on the radio in songs or TV, and if you cursed and got caught you had a bar of soap stuck in your mouth.

“Please, Thank you, yes please, no thank you, yes ma'am, no ma'am yes sir, and no sir were part of our daily vocabulary!

The world we live in now is just so full of crooked people, hate and disrespect for others

Consider Re-posting if you're thankful for your childhood. I will never forget where I came from and only wish children nowadays had half the chance at the fun and respect for real life we grew up with! And we were never bored!

Happily Copied and pasted 😎
