We want to involve the community in our efforts to care for the animals. We WANT and NEED Volunteers - to walk the dogs, play with the cats, foster animals until we find a permanent home for them, help with fundraisers and adoption events, cleaning cat cages at the Muncie PetSmart, caring for the animals at the shelter. e welcome and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. We are ALWAYS in need of items such as bleach, pine sol, laundry detergent, dish soap, paper towel, trash bags, scoopable litter, toys for cats and dogs, metal food bowls, blankets, towels, sheets, pillow cases, snacks for the animals, and really anything that you would use for your pets at home! Monetary donations and gift cards are great as well. We are an adoption partner with PetSmart. We attend adoption events at Muncie, Fort Wayne (Marysville Road), Carmel, and Noblesville PetSmart locations. We are very rescue friendly and are grateful to the rescues in their efforts to help us with our animals. We do require a signed contract with the rescues we work with. We are located at 2520 N. 200 E. Hartford City. The shelter is staffed seven days a week. However, we are closed to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays. Hours for the 5 other days of the week are 10:30-12:30 and 4:30-6:30. Appointments for hours outside of these times and days can also be made! After hours please leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible. Emergency ONLY please call the Blackford County Sheriff Department at 765-348-0930.

Seems crazy that some of the most desirable breeds have the longest stays in a shelter. Oprah is a great dog and after 1 long year she is still here. She is a German Shepherd that is very ball driven. She will play fetch for you as long as you will throw the ball! She knows many commands and is a very smart girl. She is not a good fit with other pets unfortunately and that always makes it harder to find the right home for her. But she is great with people so if you are someone who is happy with only one pet then please check out Oprah. She is a little over 3 years old and I am just shy of 60lbs. Did you know that BCAS has a Barn Cat Adoption Program? We have cats that are too feisty, too shy or too fearful to interact with people that just prefer the company of other cats and animals. Most of these cats thrive by having “work” to do. These cats need areas away from high-traffic streets and protected from predators and they do require food, water and monitoring to stay healthy.

BCAS has a wait list for adopters who are interested in providing these felines a safe environment. As the weather gets warmer, cats will become available and the sooner they are re-released, the happier and healthier they will be.

My name is Wednesday and I was a scaredy cat but now with a year under my belt at the shelter I am warming up to humans. I am not a big fan of people picking me up but I do like a few pets here and there for now. I am quiet and keep to myself, but I might like you if you are patient and let me warm up to you on my own terms. You can pet me and I will like the attention. PETE NEEDS A FOSTER OR ADOPTER ASAP! He needs adopted so he can be with his people when the seizures happen instead of in a shelter. We are working to get them under control with medication but it just takes time. Pete is clearly a beagle and he has all the personalities of the breed. He loves all people, he is good with cats and other dogs and he totally loves to play fetch. He will need some vet visits to monitor his levels to get him back on track. I’m Mason and I am a black and white tabby and me is one handsome boy. I was at PetSmart but got a little under the weather there because it stressed me out. Harley is one loyal pup. He is a playful boy and is always curious as to what is going on around him. He loves his people and maybe a good fit with older kids. He is kind of an escape artist and is very smart. He would do great with a fenced in yard so that he can not go out on a wild journey around the neighborhood. My name is Wicca and I have been here at the shelter for over a year now. It sure beats living on the streets with kittens galore but I am ready to be adopted. I am trying to find a loving and patient home where I could learn to trust people a little more. This old guy is Ziggy and he is a long term shelter dog. He has been in and out of our shelter since August 2021. This terrier mix is a loveable guy and still very playful. Senior dogs should not spend their remaining days as a shelter dog. He is loved here and taken care of but it does not replace the love of being in a home and sharing his time with a family doing dog stuff.
