Becoming an Eagle Scout is no easy feat. The requirements for these young men to achieve this title are something that would dissuade most. One of those requirements is a service project. The scout is required to plan, develop, and execute a project that is beneficial to an organization outside of the scouts. We were fortunate enough to be the recipient of such a gesture.
Aidan Mehm of Troop 617 is responsible for this new structure we have at the rescue. He along with his Father and a few fellow scouts made multiple trips from Prattville to bring Aidan’s vision to life. They braved the heat, bugs, and occasional puppy between the legs to get it done. While many kids there age would be at home playing video games, these young men were putting in work.
The craftsmanship is extraordinary and beyond what we expected. When he asked, the only request I had of Aidan was to construct something to help the pups stay cool in the summer and out of the elements. I wanted him to have the liberty to create. What you see is his interpretation of that.
What I’m truly appreciative of is the fact that Troop 617 is headquartered in Prattville. Aidan could’ve easily found something more convenient for his project. Over the course of months, he could’ve changed his mind. His perseverance to help us is a testament to his character and that of his fellow scouts.
If you’re the kind of person who sifts through resumés, don’t gloss over the achievement of being an Eagle Scout. It’s much more than campfires, merit badges, and a hand gesture. It’s an achievement in excellence and worthy of praise.
One of Aidan’s fellow scouts also constructed a bat house for us to put in the rescue. This is something we’ve looked forward to for some time as we love bats and have quite a few here.
Thank you, Aidan and Troop 617.
