I get a lot of questions about making homemade dog food. I'm so happy when I meet people who are stepping up their dog food game.

When someone tells me they are feeding chicken, rice, and mixed vegetables, my response is...

1️⃣ if they HAVE to feed rice, choose organic brown rice instead of enriched white rice; the former is a great source of fiber, and the latter has been stripped of nutrients

2️⃣ I recommend a mixed vegetable blend without corn or pureed organic mixed greens and other dog save veggies

3️⃣ I suggest canned sardines (no salt added), wild caught salmon, or mackerel

4️⃣ gently cooked chicken eggs

5️⃣ a base mix OR over kibble

I know a lot of people don't recommend rice or kibble, but I'm not a lot of people.

I believe in meeting people where they are, and if someone is starting with a chicken and rice recipe with kibble, then I can work with that.

When they see the improvements to their dog's health and appearance, they'll want to do more, and I hope they return to me for more tips on improving their dog's diet.

Does your dog have arthritis, neuropathic pain or chronic pain? Then chances are your vet has prescribed gabapentin. But there have been ZERO controlled research studies on gabapentin to treat chronic pain. And case reports show mixed results. And it hasn’t even been FDA approved for dogs!

And one vet told us it wasn’t helping the dogs and the ones coming to her had bad reactions … like tarry diarrhea, aggressiveness, low energy, tremors, difficulty breathing, anxiety, loss of appetite and digestive issues.

There are better options when your dog has pain. Click the link to find out more about why you should avoid gabapentin ... and learn about natural pain relief for your dog.

10/17/2023

Purina Pro Plan Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Lamb & Oatmeal Formula Dry Dog Food Protein at 26% is WAY TOO LOW!!! Carbohydrates - Cheap Fillers (calculated) at 36% is WAY too HIGH!!!
INGREDIENTS
LAMB, 3 Star - Can legally be from Dead, Dying, Diseased or Disabled animals (4-D), AFTER all the useful meat is removed; ie the carcasses, unlike “DEBONED LAMB” which is Muscle Meat! It adds (water) weight to the dry food “starting” ingredient list, but once the water is sucked out, the LAMB ends up WAY down the list – maybe the 5th or 6th ingredient, in the FINISHED kibble, in this case. May contain ENDOTOXINS (produced by Gram Negative Bacteria such as E. Coli) and these are NOT destroyed by the extrusion process; severe sickness and organ failure can result!)
OAT MEAL, 2 Star - Crushed oat groats, nutritive fiber, can aid colon health. Will be FEED GRADE (think old and moldy and contaminated with poisonous AFLATOXINS from mold)
BARLEY, 3 Star for Dogs, 2 Star for Cats- Reasonable source of nutrients and a better grain for dogs, Unsuitable, high carb filler for cats, Not "whole ground." Can legally be of any quality, including, most commonly, “HOG GRADE”, not fit for human consumption. Will likely contain much higher MOLD levels than “human quality” barley, meaning AFLATOXINS, which are poisonous! ALL non-organic grains can be Round-Up (Glyphosate) contaminated as this poisonous chemical is used as a “Ripening/dessicating agent”.
FISH MEAL, 1 Star - Non-descriptive source of protein (NOT from a NAMED fish!) low in fatty acids (ANY fish waste is used and the oil is already pressed out). Poor quality, rancid fish are often used. Generally preserved with carcinogenic ETHOXYQUIN, which doesn’t have to be listed in the ingredients and is banned almost everywhere else in the world to its cancer-causing nature!
CANOLA MEAL, 1 Star - Oil (fatty acids) has been pressed out of seed. Cheap source of Protein, Carbs. Will be organ-damaging, cancer- and infertility-causing GMO laced with poisonous Round-Up (Glyphosate). Also will be “Hog-Grade” and a potential source for poisonous AFLATOXINS
RICE, 1 Star - Cheap filler, can contribute to diabetes in dogs and cats as it is EXTREMELY high on the Glycemic Index – even higher than Table Sugar! Often indicates poorest quality possible. Rice, especially with the germ and bran/hulls intact, has high levels of OXALATES, associated with crystals and stones in the Urinary Tract in dogs and cats. Rice can also be contaminated with potentially lethal AFLATOXINS from molds. Chinese rice products have found to be contaminated with dangerous Melamine and Cyanuric Acid. American rice is heavily contaminated with Arsenic.
BEEF FAT, 1 Star – Also known as Beef Tallow. - Poor source of fat. This fat obtained from the tissue of cattle in the commercial process of rendering. Also called Beef Fat. Dogs and cats like the taste of this fat, so it is often used to make low-quality food more palatable. Can legally be rendered from Dead, Dying, Diseased or Disabled animals (4-D), plus a FIFTH “D” – DECOMPOSING, and a SIXTH “D” – DRUGGED. The euthanising drug PENTOBARBITALCONTINUES TO BE FOUND IN BEEF FAT. It can also contain insecticides used as parasite control on animals as well as the drugs used to treat sickness that are present in a dead animal. Beef Fat is very low in linoleic acid and much cheaper for the pet food industry to use than a good quality vegetable oil such as Flax, or nutritionally rich chicken fat.
DRIED EGG PRODUCT 2 Star - Cheap source of protein, waste product of egg industry, free of shell.
PEA PROTEIN, 2 Star - is what remains of a “Field Pea” ie Cattle Feed, after removing the carbohydrate, the water and the “husk”. Even though it contains over 80% protein, this ingredient has a MUCH lower biological value than meat, lacking critical amino acids. Less costly plant-based products like this can notably boost the total protein reported on the label; a factor that must be considered when judging the meat content of pet food. It has VERY high levels of Lectins (a pro-inflammatory Protein) and should be avoided in animals with gastrointestinal, allergy/sensitivity or joint issues.
BREWERS DRIED YEAST, 4 Star - Brewers yeast is an inactivated, dried byproduct of the brewing industry. This ingredient contains about 45% protein and is rich in other healthy nutrients including most of the Vitamin B Complex. Fans believe yeast repels fleas and supports the immune system
NATURAL FLAVORS, 1 Star –Natural Flavors are made from the hydrolysis of animal waste products, even when putrified and rotting, and pets LOVE this stuff.. I call, it “Kitty/Doggy Crack”, added to disguise the poor quality of the other ingredients, particularly those low in meat! It is the ONLY thing, along with ANIMAL FAT, or BEEF FAT that make the cheapest, nastiest foods edible!
FISH OIL, 1 Star - Non-descriptive type of fish oil can include rancid oils from "throw away" catches. Rendered from fish waste left over after processing. Guts, skin heads and bones end up in the rendering vat, and are usually “high” by the time they get to the rendering plant. VERY cheap and of a vastly inferior quality to eg Herring or Salmon Oil!
SUNFLOWER OIL, 2 Star - Gimmicky, source of fat for energy, healthy coat
DRIED CHICORY ROOT, 3 Star - Source of inulin, a prebiotic.
SALT, 1 Star – Never more than 0.5% of the total “starting” ingredients. Can be used to cover up the flavour of rancid meat and fat. Not a healthful addition but added to satisfy AAFCO’s required levels for Sodium
L-LYSINE MONOHYDROCHLORIDE, 1 Star – An ESSENTIAL amino acid for cats, found in meat Poor source of Lysine (essential amino acid found in meat), cheaper to use for food enrichment for grain-based foods.
STANDARD MINERALS, 1 Star - Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite
STANDARD VITAMINS, 2 Star - Vitamin E Niacin Vitamin A Calcium Pantothenate Thiamine Mononitrate Vitamin B-12, Riboflavin Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Folic Acid Vitamin K Vitamin D-3 Biotin Choline Chloride, Vitamin C)
DRIED BACILLUS COAGULANS FERMENTATION PRODUCT, 5 Star – Probiotic
PROTEIN – 26% (Needs to be at LEAST 35%
FAT – 16%
CARBOHYDRATES (Calc) 36% WAY TOO HIGH!! Dogs don’t NEED Carbs!
FIBER 4%

Specialized dry formula that nourishes skin and coat and supports the digestive health of adult dogs. Made with sunflower oil rich in omega-6 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat as well as oat meal that is easily digestible.Ingredients: Lamb, oat meal, barley, fish meal (source of glucosamine), ca...

Our sweet new girl Pebbles has been admitted to the hospital. They want to start her on antibiotics for possible aspiration, and also some IV meds for nausea.

We don't do this much, but we are attaching the estimate we received for this (for 24 hour hospitalization), as we are really in need of help with vet bills.

Every penny counts if you can help. Thank you!

We could use some help. This is Zara, a 2-year-old Great Pyrenees. Zara came to us last year out of Georgia. She had been turned in to a shelter and on arrival, she was extremely wobbly and it was clear something was very wrong. It rapidly became apparent she was a genetic orthopedic disaster and she needed a double hip replacement if she was going to survive. The choice was fix her or euthanize her because she was going to be unable to walk soon and other orthopedic procedures would not work. The surgeon said she was a good candidate for hip replacement and so we went for it. In 2022, we replaced the first hip and it was hugely successful. Now, we need to do the other.

The problem with hip replacements is they are catastrophically expensive and it's out of range for most people. Zara's total costs for both hips will be over $17,000 (and that's with the discount they give). We've paid for the first hip, and now we have to pay for the second. It is a fact that fixing dogs like this is a crowdsourcing project because there are very few people who could afford it on their own. I know there are people who will criticize us for spending this amount of money on one dog. We don't seek out dogs like this, but once they are with us, we consider it our moral and ethical obligation to do what we can for the dog in front of us and if the dog is in need, we will do our best because that is what we do.

The tragic part of this is that Zara suffered because of poor breeding practices. She inherited this condition because someone didn't care enough to not breed dogs with a trait that is inherited and which causes immense suffering. Groups like ours end up with these dogs because people can't afford to provide the care needed and all of this lies at the feet of unethical breeding.

Zara will go on to live a life pain free and she will get her happily ever after. If you’d like to donate $5 to help, you can do so here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LPNJEHNPR8AUU or via Venmo at (last four digits 9191). Thanks as always.

Sharing a story about xylitol. Do not use Benadryl Gel caps!

Reposted........Take Heed

Please read and share!

On Sunday night our dog Remi was bit or stung by something.. we sadly still don’t know what.. she was vomiting and had hives. We did like most pet owners and gave her Benadryl.. .sadly she quickly turned for the worst. 2:45 in the morning we rushed her to the emergency clinic in Mishawaka. When she arrived her pupils were nonresponsive and she was experiencing tremors. They quickly rushed her away and got her hooked up to IV and on meds. Her glucose level when we arrived was only 36 and her liver and kidneys were compromised.
By 6 AM she had stabilized, but was not out of the woods. At 7:30 we had to transport her to another vet clinic. She spent the day there and was able to come home that evening❤️❤️
She is now recovering well at home and we are so thankful we did not lose her..

For three days I’ve been trying to figure out what went wrong and why she reacted to the Benadryl the way she did.. with the help of Dr. Brown from Fedore Vet Clinic we realized the liquid gelcaps Benadryl that I gave her had ingredients that are toxic to dogs. You’ve all heard that people say artificial sweeteners are bad and are fatal for them, well the Benadryl allergy liquid gelcaps have this in them....

Please share so other owners are aware that the Benadryl allergy liquid gelcaps cannot be given to dogs!!!

Please share.

Xylitol
A Common Artificial Sweetener Is Poisoning Dogs. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in everything from toothpaste to peanut butter to sugar-free gum. And, it turns out, it's poison for dogs. The FDA just dropped a new warning that, while it's just fine for people, the sweetener has proven fatal for dogs
Found in gum, peanut butter, jams, pop AND Benadryl Gel Caps!!
It's killing dogs but there is no warnings on labels.
It's up to the dog community to spread the word!

SWEET BOY HAS BEEN WAITING AT FAIRFIELD ANIMAL CONTROL SINCE FEBRUARY!!!! 😮

A shelter is no place for a senior pup - so share Jesse like crazy everywhere & help get him outta there!

Jesse is a 7-8 year old neutered Golden Retriever-Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix that is available for adoption at the shelter. Sadly Jesse's owner passed away and he has been adjusting to the changes in his life at the shelter.

A full check up by Dr. Kristy was done and it was found Jesse has some arthritis that made him stiff however now on medication he is a different dog. He also felt Jesse may be stressed due to all the changes in his life, which is no surprise. He needs a loving home and some TLC! Having had a good check up otherwise, Jesse needs two things per Dr. Kristy: More exercise & some of the extra weight to come off.
Jesse also needs a house where there are not a lot of stairs — though some stairs is no problem. He is friendly with everyone, but he can be protective of his food and toys. When at a vet or groomer muzzling is a must. Also the family of Jesse's former owner suggested a home with no children.

If interested in Jesse, please contact:

I just wish more people would read/share this information, so we can raise awareness and educate people. I just wrote an informative post with illustrations and even a FREE download to make a "Hot Cars" drink tumbler :). Meet Baby Girl!

This girl is a 12 year old sweetie surrendered several months back. She’s calm and quiet and looking for a loving home to live the rest of her life in. She has had respiratory issues and needs dust free litter and occasional use of an inhaler. She had no issues prior to the shelter so it’s hoped once she’s in a home the issue will resolve. She’s had X-rays and bloodwork and is an otherwise healthy girl.

MEET ARTICHOKE! AKA "ARTIE!" POOR FELLA'S BEEN WAITING AT THE WALLINGFORD SHELTER FOR A LONG TIME — AND NO ONE KNOWS WHY. 🙁 EVEN THE SHELTER DOESN'T KNOW. ❤

Look at that sweet face. That's Artie! He's a very smart dog and would be a great buddy to someone! He gets along well with other dogs that he meets. He is a little shy at first, but will come out of his shell after getting to know you. He would do best in a quiet environment with a fenced in yard. He hopes his furever family is on their way to meet him! 😊

WE DO, TOO! 😉
Got questions? Want to meet Artie? Just contact the Wallingford Shelter by calling them at (203) 294-2180 or email them at [email protected].
