I love reading these tidbits of information. Learn something new everyday!
Many, if not most, of the Greyhound Community have seen the photo created by the Greyhound Channel with Carlos, the greyhound, taking on a cheetah. We've all heard that the greyhound is the fastest accelerating land animal on earth second only to the cheetah. But in an actual race what does the science say about the outcome?
Dr. Stanley Coren will tell you that the victor will not be the cheetah. So will the College of Veterinary Science at the University of Minnesota. In fact, science based anything will tell you in this race, the greyhound will prevail. But wait, how can that be? Anatomy and physics have the answer: in an actual trip around the oval, the cheetah will start out faster, without a doubt, because their starting acceleration rate is at about 60 mph, with the greyhound coming in initially at about 45mph. However, after about 15 seconds into the race, the cheetah runs out of gas and the greyhound easily leaves him eating sand.
