Folks, we need your help!

Abbreviated version - we need a place to hold vaccine clinics in Hart, Franklin or Elbert Counties.

Long version -

We are gearing up to bring low cost spay neuter to the northeast Georgia area.

First step? Raising some funds. Our funds are depleted. We have some grant money left thanks to Second Life Atlanta (go shop them!), but these funds don't cover our basic operations, purchase of supplies, and other necessary but not sexy expenses.

Also first step - getting back into the vaccine clinic game. We are ready! But - we need a location. It seems as if the local school board doesn't want to help (that would have been an IDEAL location, but.) So we're turning to our supporters.

If you know of a space that would like to help us out, or know of someone in the Hart, Franklin or Elbert communities that knows folks, let us know? We'll continue doing the legwork in the background but sending it out into the universe for good vibes and networking.

If you're able to throw us a few bucks, we'd surely appreciate it, though we know times are hard. Even better is giving us the opportunity to earn that money through serving the community.

You're welcome to email ideas, suggestions, and commentary to me personally at [email protected]

Thank you, here's to the power of community, and here's to one step closer to low cost spay neuter in the area!

HUGE thanks to Georgia Dog Advocates, Greater Good Charities, and Animal Rescue Aid for their incredible generosity for Hart County Humane Society and so many other rescues, shelters and outreach organizations throughout the state.

Because of their huge hearts, HCHS not only has heartworm preventative for all their foster dogs for the foreseeable future, but we also have flea and tick medications for our upcoming community outreach partnership event (details TBD!)

It truly takes a village in this business. And with as hard as times have been for rescuers, this was a much needed boost - and a financial lifeline.

Thank you so much from us, from HCHS, and from adoptable boy Moose!

A Note From The Director

Dear friends,

I have received many emails asking about our Barrow clinics and spay neuter assistance, and I owe you a long overdue update.

As you know, we had to close our Barrow spay neuter clinic in August of 2023 due to financial constraints. What you don't know is that this was also a culmination of several personal events as well.

During 2020 and 2021, both my parents passed away. As they lived out of state, I had to spend months away from home handling the estate and sale of property.

Once that was settled, my husband and I were able to purchase land in Hart County, Georgia, and we began the construction process for our new home.

At the same time as the clinic closed, we ran into some major unforseen financial issues with the new home. We were able to resolve them and finish construction, but I ended 2023 with my clinic closed, my finances busted, and in a new place with new beginnings.

As we have moved our physical location, so too have we changed our focus. We have very few active members and volunteers, and as a result are unable to continue services in Barrow. Without our regular vaccine clinic income, our funds available to assist with spay and neuter surgeries while maintaining our low but necessary overhead have shrunk.

As a result, we are regrouping with a focus on our new home, Hart County. There are no low cost clinics here, but there is a wonderful group, Hart County Humane Society, that has a small but incredibly important voucher program.

We are so pleased that they are letting us partner with them to expand their voucher availability in the counties they serve, Hart and Franklin. We also plan to work with them to offer vaccine clinics to the community.

Long story short, and how appropriate for Easter! we are recreating and restarting our mission in a new location, with new partners, and a new community to serve.

I am truly sorry both that we are no longer able to assist the communities that we have been a part of in the past, and that my personal issues have led me to be less than prompt addressing the multiple inquiries for assistance.

I have updated our list of Georgia low cost spay neuter clinics, and will be reaching out to all our assistance requests with alternative options over the next few weeks. We will have our first event this weekend at the 16th Annual Hart County Humane Society Dam Dog Walk, with discounted spay/neuter vouchers, to introduce ourselves to the community.

Most of all, I want to thank every one of you that helped us begin and grow in the metro Atlanta area. We are so grateful for our clients, supporters, volunteers and staff. You made AAG what it is, and I can only hope to live up to your example as we shift northeast.

Sincerely,
Jen Wagner

We had a question on our post about Planned PEThood of GA 's Feral Cat Days.

Feral (or community) cats are unowned cats that may or may not be friendly, and live outside. You have probably seen some.

These cats are generally not adoptable, as they have grown up without human contact and are not able to be socialized.

They can, however, make kittens. And this they do with great frequency.

You may or may not know that springtime into summer is considered "kitten season" in shelters and rescues - and is not a good thing. With the coming of spring, all unfixed cats, owned or unowned, come unto heat and begin the breeding cycle. One unfixed female cat can have three litters a year, and at an average of 4 to 6 kittens a litter, you can see where this leads.

We expect owners to have their cats fixed, to prevent their owned cats from contributing to the overpopulation issue. Clinics keep their prices low while still covering costs to help owners with this.

But who fixes feral cats?

The answer is people who care about them and want to prevent not only homeless kittens, but also the ugly, slow deaths many feral kittens face. There's a reason nature designed cats to breed the way they do - without human intervention, most kittens die.

So TNR programs (Trap, Neuter, Return), provide a way for people to help feral cats in their community. The cats are caught in humane traps, delivered to the clinic, fixed and rabies vaccinated, given an eartip, and returned to their home to live out their life.

Often, because cat colony caregivers have multiple cats to fix, because keeping kittens out of shelters (and from dying on the streets) is in everyone's interest, and because it's the right thing to do, clinics and funding organizations will provide grant money to lower the cost of TNR for caregivers. This allows clinics to price TNR below their cost. However, these funds are very limited and generally targeted to reduce shelter intake in a specific area or assist a certain population.

To prevent people from using grant money or subsidies towards cats they own, clinics require cats coming for TNR to arrive in a humane trap and receive an eartip (we'll cover eartipping and return to colony in another post). It's also unsafe for staff to handle unsocialized cats in carriers; cats can be safely evaluated and premedicated while still inside a humane trap.

For more information on feral and community cats, TNR, and all things colonies, we recommend you check out alleycats.org

And please feel free to ask questions! We love to talk about the things we love. ❤️
