National Meow Like a Pirate Day is celebrated on September 19th each year to recognize the role cats played on the high seas in the past. Cats were often seen as good luck charms and were valued for their ability to catch rats.

As well as being St. Patrick's Day, did you know today is also St Gertrude’s Day – Patron Saint of Cats? 🐱💚

St. Gertrude of Nivelles, the Patron Saint of Cats, lived from 626 to 659 in Belgium.
Since Gertrude was known for offering hospitality (to people as well as animals), she was kind to the cats that hung around her monastery, offering them food and affection. 🐈💕

Gertrude is also associated with cats because she often prayed for the souls of people in purgatory, and artists of the time symbolised those souls as mice, which cats like to chase. Therefore, Gertrude came to be linked with both cats and mice and now serves as the Patron Saint of Cats. 😇🐾
