Check out this veterinarian-recommended guide from the American Association of Equine Practitioners to get a better idea of what constitutes an urgent and same-day emergency.

Remember, if you are unsure if something constitutes an emergency, call and consult your veterinarian to determine the best course of action. We are always here for you.

The summer heat and sun won't be letting up any time soon, so make sure your equine friends are adequately protected from harmful UV rays.

In addition to the pain and discomfort, horses that are prone to recurrent sunburn may also face other long-term consequences, like the increased likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma (a common cancer).

If your horse is susceptible to sunburn, contact your veterinarian for more information about sun damage and recommendations to keep your horse protected this summer.

As Dr. Christine Cocquyt explains, Equine Asthma is a progressive condition that may eventually lead to the horse having year-round signs of labored breathing and cough that is difficult to control.

In addition to environmental changes and soaking feed, some cases require medications that help open the airways and decrease inflammation. Your veterinarian can help determine the best treatment plan for each individual horse.

The hot and dry days of summer typically bring a rise in dry and brittle hooves. In addition to the hot and dry days, the perpetual interchange between wet and dry conditions propel the hoof wall to become weakened.

A weakened hoof wall is susceptible to cracks, chips and difficulty holding shoes. The defects created in the hoof wall can become a gateway for bacterial and fungal invasion into the hoof wall leading to a more serious condition.

Dr. David Dunlpap is sharing tips to protect your horse’s hooves this summer.

Tennessee Equine Hospital West ’s Dr. Cindy Weis shares heat stress warning signs to keep in mind in summer. ☀️

The quickest way and most efficient ways to decrease your horse’s body temperature include:

-Stop all exercise. Remove tack.
-Remove horse from direct sunlight. Get into the shade.
-Place horse where air is circulating – where there is a breeze or create a breeze with a fan.
-Hose with cool water starting at the hooves, working up the legs, over the large muscle groups of hindquarters, back, neck and head if horse allows for as long as needed.
-Offer as much cool, clean water as horse will drink.

Contact your veterinarian in case your horse fails to respond to your efforts and the need for intravenous fluids and medical intervention to reduce body temperature occurs if conditions deteriorate rapidly.
