Not sure who needs to hear this, but a reminder to leave wildlife in the wild. In many situations, the mother will leave her young unattended to keep them safe. Simply enjoy the view, maybe snap a photo, but give them distance and keep pets away.

What young animals have you been seeing this spring?

As a reminder, if you know the mother is dead or you see injured animals, you can reach out to licensed wildlife rehabilitators. A list can be found at https://www2.dnr.state.mi.us/dlr/

Please please please follow! We are getting many calls everyday for what appears to be “abandoned” fawns. MOST are not truly without mom. She’s around. They will not come to get their babies if humans are around. Don’t touch. Don’t pick up. Don’t intervene unless you absolutely know that mom is deceased. Fawns can be left without mom for hours. As hard as it is to walk away, please do so. Monitor from a distance.

It is common in the spring and summer to find baby animals that appear to be left alone in the wild.

As fawning season approaches and more people are heading out to enjoy this nice weather, we need to keep in mind the wildlife. A few good rules to follow:

When in doubt don't touch! Mom is likely near by and touching/handling fawns can deter mom from returning and caring for her fawn. The best thing you can do is to leave the animal alone. Many animals will hide their young for safety, and they will return. The majority of the time these wild animals do not need our help and it is best for wildlife to remain in the wild.

On the flip side:
If you believe the parent is dead or the animal is injured, you can contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before removing an animal from the wild. Only licensed wildlife rehabilitators may possess abandoned or injured wildlife.
