🐾🚨It’s National Pet Poison Prevention Week! 🚨🐾
Each year, thousands of pets are exposed to harmful substances, many of which are found right in our homes. In 2023 alone, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) received over 351,000 calls about toxic exposures! Here are the top dangers to watch out for:
❌ Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications (16.8% of cases) – Dropped pills, vitamins, and common pain medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can be dangerous if ingested.
❌ Human Prescription Medications – Heart meds, inhalers, and ADHD medications are some of the most commonly ingested and can cause severe reactions.
❌ Food & Drink – Items like protein drinks, xylitol (found in sugar-free gum), chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic can be highly toxic to pets.
❌ Plants & Fungi – While the trend of houseplants has cooled since COVID, some plants remain a risk to curious pets. Always check if a plant is pet-safe before bringing it home.
❌ Household Products – Batteries, deoxidizers (found in jerky and soft treats), and cleaning products can cause serious harm if chewed or ingested.
❌ Rodent & Insecticides – Pets can be exposed when rodents move bait blocks from hidden spaces to areas within reach. Always store these products securely!
