Yesterday, we welcomed a very special group of cats into our care. These cats came to us from a research facility where theyโ€™ve spent their entire livesโ€”some for up to 10 years. These sweet seniors have never known the warmth of a home, the joy of sunbeams on a windowsill, or the comfort of a gentle touch from someone who loves them.

This marks the beginning of a brand-new chapter for these deserving souls. After spending their entire lives in cages, they are finally stepping into a world full of possibilities.

As soon as they arrived, our team got straight to work, providing them with the care and attention they needed. For these cats, this may be the first time theyโ€™ve experienced toys, cozy blankets, and the promise of a brighter future.

When Hardy first arrived, he was severely underweight, dehydrated, and had healed wounds on his leg and ear. But thanks to your help, we were able to give this sweet boy the care and love he needed, and now this amazing pup has made incredible progress!

After he started feeling better, Hardy showed off his playful personality and he loves being around people. Since being in our care, we learned that he adores treats, knows the โ€œsitโ€ command, and he has even tackled our obstacle course!

Hardyโ€™s been with us since before Halloween and this boy loves attention! Heโ€™s looking to be someoneโ€™s one and only. Heโ€™s currently being treated for heartworms and will need to be the only dog in his future home.

Cats and dogs are much more sensitive to loud noises than we are, making celebrations stressful for them. Hereโ€™s how to keep your pets safe and more comfortable during New Yearโ€™s:

As we reflect on this past year and all of the lives--both human and animal--we have seen forever changed through pet adoption, we are just so grateful for the partnership of Petco Love.

Earlier this year, Southern Pines Animal Shelter was awarded a $30,000 Lifesaving Grant from Petco Love, and this incredible support has been vital in helping us ready our pets for adoption over this past yearโ€”providing them with medical care, shelter, and everything they need to begin their journey toward a loving home.

Through this lifesaving grant, Petco Love has touched thousands of lives in our communityโ€”each adoption, each second chance, each happy new beginning that has happened in 2024 has been made possible because of their generosity. โค We are incredibly grateful for the role they've played in furthering our mission to bring people and pets together.

While gearing up to move into our brand-new office building (more on that coming soon!), we discovered that water damage and mildew has ruined much of our stored office furniture, equipment, and supplies. Now weโ€™re facing an unexpected financial hitโ€”and every penny we spend replacing these items and furnishing our new workspace is a penny we canโ€™t spend directly on the dogs and cats who need us.

We're rolling right into 2025 with multiple transports on the books, starting as soon as next week! ๐ŸšŒ

The following trips are all available and require two licensed drivers:
โ€ข January 2nd at 5:00pm - transport to Mt. Vernon, IL
โ€ข February 6th at 5:00pm - transport to Mt. Vernon, IL
โ€ข February 20th at 5:00pm - transport to Mt. Vernon, IL
โ€ข March 6th at 5:00pm - transport to Mt. Vernon, IL

Our transports save the lives of thousands of shelter pups each year by giving them a fresh start at finding a home of their own. The shelter provides the vehicle and covers the costs of gas, lodging, and an allowance for snacks/meals for both drivers. Each dog that has the opportunity to find their new family through transport opens up a kennel, allowing us to help the pets who need us most here in our community.

Due to the potential for severe weather today, we will not be at PetSmart for our usual adoption event. The shelter will still be open our normal hours (12-5pm) with lots of adoptable pets like Trudy who would love to meet you!

With the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, and hail, itโ€™s important to bring pets indoors where they can stay safe and comfortable. If bringing them inside isnโ€™t an option, make sure they have access to a sturdy, weatherproof shelter. Storms can be stressful for both humans and animals. You may notice unusual behaviors in your petsโ€”cats might hide or be reluctant to be held, while dogs may bark, whine, chew, or try to escape. To help keep them safe, ensure your pets are wearing collars with ID tags, that their microchip info is up to date, and take a current photo just in case. We also recommend registering your pet with Petco Love Lost, so that if your pet does become lost during the storm, they can find their way home a little bit easier: https://loom.ly/pbvRjRA

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that heartworms are transmitted through mosquitoes? All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito for your dog to contract heartworms. However, dogs, like our friend Zoe Mae, who test heartworm positive can go through treatment to clear their hearts. The process typically takes two-three months and is very affordable with our payment plan.
