When dogs arrive at our shelter, they bring their pasts with them—their stories, their scars, and, far too often, their heartworms. Around 80% of dogs over two years old who come through our doors test positive for heartworms– a disease that’s preventable but can be devastating without treatment.

This year, we're committed to treating as many shelter dogs for heartworms as possible. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible partners at Animal Humane Society, who donated treatment for this crew, we're making that goal a reality!

Partnerships like this go beyond transport. Shelters and rescues don’t just move pets from one place to another—we support each other. We share resources, knowledge, and compassion. Because when we work together, we are all stronger and more resilient. And for these dogs, that strength and resilience means a second chance at a healthy, happy life.

For six of these pups, this treatment has been absolutely lifesaving and they have found happy new beginnings with loving families of their own. For Diamond, Willow, and Big Bro, these three have all been treated for heartworms as well, and they’re ready for their next chapter– which you could totally write together from the comfort of your couch! Our friends at Animal Humane Society and our wonderful medical team have given all 9 of these pups the gift of health—now, Diamond, Willow, and Big Bro just need families to share it with.

Our little office helper, Gershwin, is doing his best to help us out—supervising emails, inspecting desks (to make sure there are no stray treats), and keeping morale high. But even the best office pup knows that a functioning printer is a must!

After more than a decade of loyal service, it’s finally time to say goodbye to our old Sharp commercial printer. We searched high and low for a way to keep it going, but in the end, it just wasn’t meant to be. The good news is that we’ve found a great deal on a replacement commercial printer that we hope will serve us well for years to come. The cost? $4,060.

A working printer might not be the most exciting thing to fundraise for, but it’s absolutely essential to keeping our shelter running. It prints adoption contracts that send pets home, kennel cards that help visitors learn more about our pets, medical records that keep them healthy, and transport paperwork that gives them second chances. It helps us do our jobs efficiently so we can focus on what really matters—helping pets and the people who love them.

This year has brought its fair share of challenges, and time and again, this community has stepped up to help us overcome them. We’re so grateful for your kindness and support. Meet Sybil, our astonishing girl with a personality as dynamic as a movie plot twist!

This 2-year-old Carolina Dog/Husky mix has just the right balance of zoomies and cuddles. One moment, she’s racing around like she’s got an urgent appointment with fun, and the next, she’s melting into your lap like she’s been there all along.

According to our team member, Kye, Sybil is a world-class snuggler who prefers to be hand-fed, because why not enjoy a little royal treatment? Another team member, Jacori, adds that she’s a leash-walking pro with the sweetest manners, jumping up ever so gently for affection. She’s also housetrained and gets along wonderfully with people and other dogs.

A special shoutout to the team at the Hattiesburg PetSmart for hosting us, and a BIG thank you to PetSmart Charities for helping us waive and reduce adoption fees at this event, making it easier for pets in need to find their families. Thank you to our volunteers, staff, and everyone who played a part in making this week a success! Your dedication and hard work made magic happen for homeless pets, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Previously known as Clein, his adopters now call him Kirby, and they had this to say about their sweet boy: “So much has happened over the past couple of months! Kirby has almost quadrupled his weight since we adopted him. We also did a DNA test and found out Kirby isn’t a lab mix; he’s a pitbull and German shepherd mix! So, we are working hard to make sure he has the opportunity to meet lots of people and have lots of positive experiences. He likes barking at his reflection and has lots of zoomies!
