Orca is making waves in search of his new home! 🌊

Are you in it to win it for pets like Reed?

March Muttness is back, and we'd love to have you on our team! March Muttness is a bracket-style fundraising tournament hosted by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona where shelters across the country compete against each other to raise donations to help pets like Reed find health, happiness, and loving homes. The Qualifying Round of the tournament is currently underway, ending tomorrow night, March 2nd, at 10pm CST!

This first round is a qualifying challenge–which means that every team will be playing against all teams. Southern Pines will need to place in the top 32 teams to advance to the next round in the tournament. If we do not rank in the Top 32, we will move on to a final consolation round, so that we have one more opportunity to help pets through this unique fundraising event. However, no matter how far we advance in March Muttness, all donations raised will go toward helping pets in need, just like Reed, here at Southern Pines.

Hey friends! We’re getting ready for PetSmart National Adoption Week (March 24th-30th), and we need some volunteers to help make it a success! These events are always such a blast—there’s nothing better than seeing pets find loving families, and this time, we’re aiming to match 100 pets with homes. 💙 We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and shifts available, so whether you want to help introduce pets to adopters, walk dogs, clean cats, help set up or tear down, or just be part of the excitement–there’s a place for you!

Our puppy kennels have been packed over the last couple of weeks with pups like Shmeverly which has left us almost completely out of canned food and laundry supplies. In addition to feeding dozens of hungry puppies, we use canned food to administer medications to our adult dogs, which means we go through dozens of cans a week. To help keep everyone fed, clean, and dry, we could really use:

🐶 Canned adult & puppy food (pâté, ground, or chopped)
🧺 Laundry detergent
🧼 Bleach (unscented)
🗞️ Newspaper

You can either drop off a few items at the shelter during our business hours (M-S, 12pm-5pm; Closed on Wednesdays), or if it's more convenient, order through our Amazon or Chewy wishlists:

Happy Tails, Barbie!

While at the shelter, Barbie was known as Keegan, and just in time for the holidays, she found her perfect home! Her new favorite person had this to say about her, “She’s brightened every bit of it up! She’s helped me keep my home extra clean because if I leave even a bundle of bananas on the kitchen counter, she’ll find a way to get them and eat them all (8 of them in one sitting to be exact)!”

Barbie is definitely a social butterfly! “She’s obsessed with everyone she meets, and now, if a group of people walk past her without acknowledging her, she’ll get upset and start whining until they come back and give her pets. She’s so goofy, it’s been a blast seeing her gain confidence in herself the past 2 months.” Hope said she went from being a skinny pup with heartworms to a happy, healthy, and energetic dog! She wasn’t even sure about toys at first, but after watching other dogs play, she gave them a try and now she has bins full of them and can never pick just one!

Introducing our golden beauty, Molly! This 6-year-old golden retriever mix is as sweet as they come. She’s gentle, patient, and a lover of treats! She knows “sit,” walks beautifully on a leash, and does well with calm dogs. Though she’s a little shy at first, Molly warms up with kindness (and snacks), and enjoys meeting new people. 💛 She even starred in a news feature and was a total pro about being in the limelight! The only thing she’s not a fan of? Car rides, but with a loving home, she’ll have all the time she needs to feel safe and ready to overcome that fear with her new family cheering her on!

The moments that change everything rarely announce themselves. They happen quietly—between the bars of a kennel door, in the hands that offer comfort, in the chance to begin again.

For Penny, that moment began at Southern Pines Animal Shelter, where a second chance was waiting. She didn’t know it yet, but she was about to get the care she needed—a warm bed, a gentle touch, and the medical attention that would set her on the path to a new life. Thanks to the Spay-It-Forward Fund, Penny received everything necessary to prepare for adoption, including her spay surgery at Southern Pines Healthy Pet Clinic.

Now, she’s thriving in a loving home with her best friend, Faith. She spends her days chewing on sticks, playing endless games of fetch, and kicking ice under the counters just to make her humans retrieve it (every. single. time.). She also enjoys daily walks on the Trace and her beloved "sniffaris," leading Faith on exciting adventures wherever her nose takes her.

"She is a very happy puppy, and I could not have asked for a better pup or better care from Southern Pines Animal Shelter and Southern Pines Healthy Pet Clinic!" Faith shares.

This is the power of second chances. The unseen ripples of a single act—one donation, one surgery, one safe place—leading to a life filled with joy, curiosity, and unconditional love.
