The Hattiesburg Convention Commission (HCC), its Commissioners and employees are saddened by the passing of one of its founding Commissioners, Mr. Charles J. Brown.

“As a founding member of the Commission, I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Brown for more than three decades,” said Rick Taylor, Executive Director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission. “Mr. Brown was instrumental in helping guide and transition the Commission from its initial mission of creating and managing the Lake Terrace Convention Center to becoming what it is today, which is a catalyst and developer of attractions that not only improve the quality of life of the people who enjoy them but also grow the economy of our city.” “Our community should be forever grateful for his service,” continued Taylor. The Brown/Lucas Executive Conference Room at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, was dedicated in-part to Mr. Brown.

The African American Military History Museum at the historic USO and the Historic Eureka School were among Mr. Brown’s favorite restoration projects of the HCC. They both held sentimental value to him because of the role they each played in his personal life. Mr. Brown attended the historic Eureka School before graduating from L.J. Rowan in 1958, and worked as a janitor at the local community center formerly known as the East Sixth Street USO prior to serving in the United States Army.

Before his work began with the HCC in 1991, Brown was one of the founding committee members who took on the seemingly impossible feat of establishing a museum at the historic USO on East 6th Street, which served Black soldiers at Camp Shelby during World War II. Mr. Brown was a decorated Vietnam War veteran being decorated with Bronze Star medals, two Purple Heart medals and numerous citations serving with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served with distinction from 1959-1969.

Latoya Norman, Director of Museum’s for the Sixth Street Museum District (a part of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission) had the following to say about Mr. Brown. “It is hard to put into words what Mr. Brown meant to me and the District. I began working with the Commission in 2008 with very little military history knowledge, so meeting someone like Mr. Brown with his kind of experience was a bit intimidating, but I will always remember him welcoming me with open arms and offering unwavering support from the very beginning. I’ve requested his assistance on numerous occasions and he excitedly accepted every request, big and small. His contribution to the success of our operations is immeasurable. I will cherish the countless stories he’s shared and look forward to honoring his legacy in the District. He was much more than a commissioner and committee member - he was our family and we will miss him tremendously.”

HEAR YE, HEAR YE! 🗣️ The 9th annual Renaissance Fest has been scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd at the Hattiesburg Zoo. “Renaissance Fest at the Hattiesburg Zoo is bigger than ever this year with more entertainment and hands-on learning opportunities to enjoy,” said Jeremy Cumpton, Director of Conservation and Education. The cost for Renaissance Fest is $12 for adults and $10 for children and takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. 🏰

New this year to Renaissance Fest is the MS Forge Council, which will be demonstrating their skills of the art of forging metals, and child-safe axe throwing, which can be found at the Ye Old Games area. Back by popular demand with the assistance of Oak Grove High School is the archery station. Several of the zoo’s ambassador animals will be encountered around the zoo with their keepers so that guests can get an up close and personal view along with having the opportunity to ask questions about each animal in their natural environment. 🐉

Tickets for Renaissance Fest are sold at the gate, and annual passes do apply. Attraction tickets (Carousel and High Adventures Ropes Course) are sold separately. Renaissance Fest is brought to you by the Hattiesburg Zoo and Cerroneth. Guests are encouraged to wear Renaissance-period costumes. No real weapons are allowed at the Hattiesburg Zoo. 👸🏼

Banjo loves puzzles! Puzzle toys and treat dispensers are a great way to challenge our fennec fox problem-solving abilities and keep them entertained. By hiding treats or kibble inside puzzle toys, we encourage them to figure out how to access the rewards. This taps into their natural foraging instincts and offers mental stimulation!

Due to popular demand of guests of the Hattiesburg Zoo, the decision has been made to offer Sensory Day on the first Sunday of every month! 🥳
“For 2025, we will continue offering this special day at a regular time each month, which allows our guests to easily recall when Sensory Day will be held so they can plan their visits in advance to enjoy this day of lowered sensory levels at our Zoo,” said Jeremy Cumpton, Director of Conservation and Education.

On a regular day, the Zoo is a bustling attraction, filled with plenty of sounds and movement that could possibly trigger an adverse reaction in someone with sensory sensitivities. On every Sensory Day the zoo will have all music turned off, quiet train rides, sensory stations, and calm animal encounters throughout the day. This event will take place during regular zoo hours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Hattiesburg Zoo staff has been trained by leading professionals to recognize guests with sensory needs, and know how to handle any sensory overload situations that may occur. Sensory bags, available in the Zoo office are equipped with noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads are designed to help both children and adults and can help lessen sensory overload and help engage and redirect individuals.

Zoo staff is prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities, and all guests will be welcomed with comfort and accommodation. The Hattiesburg Zoo was the first attraction/destination in Mississippi to be certified by KultureCity as a sensory inclusive location.

Regular zoo admission rates apply, and there is no additional charge for Sensory Day. Annual passes will be honored for every Sensory Day. ☺️

Special thank you to our amazing staff who work so hard to make sure our animals are safe, healthy, happy and WARM- even when everyone else is snowed in! We are glad they were able to enjoy a little bit of time in the snow. We think our Giant Anthill was the best place to sled in all of Hattiesburg! ❄️☃️

We would like to give an update on the health of our Jaguar, Maya. For the last several days Maya has been receiving additional medical treatments, testing, and close monitoring for chronic kidney disease and an acute kidney infection.

Maya is being given large amounts of fluids through an IV catheter and under the skin to help flush out her kidneys. She is also receiving antibiotics to address the infection. The zoo’s veterinary staff and animal care team are continuing to work closely together monitoring her condition and welfare.

“Maya is responding positively to our efforts, and is showing a bit more interest in food and exhibiting some normal behaviors,” said Hattiesburg Zoo veterinarian, Dr. Julia MacGregor. “We will give Maya the opportunity to access her outdoor habitat this weekend as she chooses,” said Kristen Moore, Director of Wildlife. “We have been monitoring the weather, and we want her to be able to enjoy the sunshine before the weather turns frigid this coming week.”

As Maya will have access to both her outdoor and indoor habitats, guests may or may not be able to view her over the weekend. We want to thank everyone for the supportive messages and well wishes for Maya. ❤️
