Hub City Service Dogs is a nonprofit organization in Hattiesburg, MS. Our goal is to help individuals in our community by selecting, training the service dog and their handler, and provide the service dog at a reasonable cost. What is a Service Dog? Service dogs are specially-trained to specifically perform tasks that increase the independence of their human partner. People paired with service dog

s show improvements psychologically, economically, ad socially. Individuals with service dogs gain independence which would never be achieved without the help of their dog. Our primary focus is training service dogs for Type I diabetes and psychiatric disabilities such as PTSD. All applications received are considered. How do we select a service dog? Our dogs are selected on an individual need basis. Each dog is selected specifically to fit the needs and environment for the individual. If someone has a dog they would like trained as their service dog, we will consider through an evaluation process. What is the training process of service dog? The training process is specialized to fit the individual needs of the recipient. The training director will determine the length of training a on a case basis. All training is coaching based, meaning that the handler is a part of the training process. The service dog in training will live with the handler. Hub City Service Dogs is the only training organization in Mississippi with a Certified Service Dog Coach (SDC). Our head trainer is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Accessed (CPDT-KA)

Applications are available on our website www.hubcityservicedogs.org. The applicant must demonstrate sufficient maturity and decision-making capability to manage the dog independently and assure a quality life for the animal. The applicant must submit documentation from their physician regarding recommended tasks for the handler. Service dogs for children must be under the stewardship of a responsible adult. How much is a service dog? The cost of acquiring, training, and placing an assistance dog and providing follow-up care to our clients is between $15,000 to $20,000. Hub City Service Dogs understands many people are unable to afford the full cost of a dog. We are engaged in continuous donation request efforts to make it possible for all who seek this service to achieve it regardless of financial ability. We expect our applicants to contribute financially and be actively engaged in their own fundraising efforts to extent that they are able to.

We had a great time speaking with one of the Girl Scout Groups located in Jones County about the differences between therapy dogs, emotional support dogs, and service dogs, and how each are specifically trained to do their task!

Always a great time when we get to educate individuals on the differences and why it is so important to know the distinction! Bulleit especially had a great time getting lots of pets!

This past Friday, we visited Presbyterian Christian School to speak with some kindergarten and third-grade classes about the differences between service dogs, guide dogs, and therapy dogs. We couldn't have done it without Bulleit the therapy dogs help!

Just so everyone knows how to play nice at Saturday’s start line!!💙🐾

🎯READ ENTIRE POST🎯Dog Days Run Walk will have over 400 + athletes and canines pounding the pavement this Saturday thru the AVENUES in Hattiesburg. With this many athletes, it is important that everyone be familar with start line etiquette. Athletes will begin lining up at 7:15 am. Volunteers will be present with signs for each distance. These signs are an indicator of where YOU need to line up according to the distance you are running/walking. We call this your race "corral". Once you are in your corral, we ask all fast runners without dogs to get up front, next will be slow runners and walkers with out dogs, and finally runners and walkers with dogs. Dont worry if you are trying to win a TOP DOG award and you are running with a dog... you will be competing in a caterogy that is only for runners with dogs.

The 5 milers will start at 7:30, then the 5K athletes at 7:33, and finally the 2 milers at 7:36. We want everyone to have a safe start and enjoy their run/walk. With this being said, it is recommended that you NOT wear headphones on the race route. Although we are not going to pull you off the course if you have headphones on, we do ask that you refrain from using them at the start and also highly recommend not wearing headphones on the race course so you can be fully aware of your surrounding. This course is not closed off to traffic so it is YOUR responsibility to watch out and listen for traffic.

Lastly, if you are running with your dog, you can not use a retractable leash. This is for the safety of runners and dogs.

As a thank you for reading this entire post, we are going to give one lucky athlete a FINISHERS DOG DAYS collar. Simply comment below with an emoji, gif, or few words letting us know YOU are up to speed on all things Dog Days. 👊 the lucky athletes will be announced this evening.

See you all on Saturday.

Dolly is doing great with her training! With service dogs, we do not expect them to be robots when in public, but they do need to be able to walk nicely on leash, ignore a lot of distractions, and listen to cues given by their handler. As you can see, Dolly does really great in public, and she is doing great with her diabetic alert scent training as well!
