Dolly the service dog in training did great on her trip to PetSmart! 🐕🦺
Dolly is doing great with her training! With service dogs, we do not expect them to be robots when in public, but they do need to be able to walk nicely on leash, ignore a lot of distractions, and listen to cues given by their handler. As you can see, Dolly does really great in public, and she is doing great with her diabetic alert scent training as well!
Working with Dolly, the service dog in training, on introducing her to low blood sugar scent. In the tin, there is a cotton swab that has her handler’s saliva on it collected when he experienced a low blood sugar. We are pairing the scent of the low blood sugar saliva with the reward of a treat. Over time we will move the tin around more, and practice while sitting, lying down, and outside to help her understand she will get rewarded for sniffing the scent in any condition.

In a study conducted by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approximately 20% of Veterans report experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in a given year. Can you imagine what that percentage is for those suffering in silence?
There is help, and it comes in many forms. Hub City Service Dogs is one of the programs here to help. If you or someone you know is suffering from PTSD, please reach out. A service dog has made a huge difference in this Veteran's life, and we hope we can do the same for others.

How can a service dog help someone who has Type 1 Diabetes?
A trained Diabetic Alert Dog can smell when their handler's blood sugar is high or low. These service dogs can then alert their owners before they become symptomatic. An alert can be so effective for the handler that it can save them from a life threatening drop in their glucose.
Watch this short clip to hear from Christin on how her service dog, Bilko, has impacted her life.

The Service Side of Training at Hub City Service Dogs
"The service side of training" is the motto of our Training Director, Alison Patrolia, CVT, SDC, LFPPE. Part of what sets Hub City Service Dogs apart is that very motto. We don't hand over a service dog and expect the handler's unique needs to be met. Our trainers work with the handler during training to ensure that they not only feel comfortable with their service dog but that they become confident in knowing what they've achieved through training. Both the service dog and the handler know that their role is essential, the dog provides a service based on the medical needs of the handler, and the handler in turn has eternal gratitude for their canine companion.
Our team knows that the bond they're helping facilitate through training is not only a job but a service, one that improves an individual's quality of life while also giving a heroic title to a well deserved dog - a service dog.

What's happening at Hub City Service Dogs?
While our trainers and our board members have been working hard to improve this nonprofit we care so deeply for, we've invested in the help of the creative team at Unify By Bread!
We have a 'new look' headed your way!
The evolution of Hub City Service Dogs over the past few years has helped us refocus on our vision. While our trainers have continued to improve their education, our mission has become further grounded in supporting our friends with disabilities. With each individual we meet through training, they do become friends as we share the trials and triumphs of life with a service dog.
We look forward to sharing with you the Hub City Service Dogs rebranding! Tag a friend who supports #HCSD with you so that they know to keep an eye out for what's coming!

Ollie at Hub City Service Dogs
Meet Ollie!
Ollie is one of our newer Hub City Service Dogs in training. Today, he worked on overcoming distractions so that he can focus on helping his handler when they need him.
A service dog can enhance his owner's life ten-fold by providing task-specific services that help alleviate symptoms caused by their disability. That training takes time, financial commitment, and effort from the handler in order to go back out into the world with their service dog and an improved quality of life.
Join us in raising money to help our organization provide and train more service dogs to the hub city and beyond. The 2021 Dog Days 5k and 2 Mile Walk is our annual fundraiser! Mark your calendar for June 12th starting at 7:30 am at Kamper Park, and sign up today!
