For Fun Fact Friday, I wanted to share with all of you a microscope view - the microscope is one of our most useful diagnostic tools! We use it daily to look at samples from ears, skin, urine… and p**p! If you look closely, you can see some bacteria that look like safety pins - these are clostridium, and can be a cause of bloody diarrhea!

We had the most adorable 4 smittens (such cute kittens) come in today - Bonnie, Clyde, Ophelia and Beatrix. Today was a long day for our staff, where we were managing multiple sick patients as inpatients, and the kittens were a bright part in our day! All the techs came in to cuddle them, and we managed to get a picture of three of the four cooperating. Soak in their fluffy goodness! (Ophelia chose not to participate 🤣)

Hot summer days are coming! Remember to leave your pets at home while running errands and check the temperature of the sidewalk before taking your dog on a walk. Speaking of walks - early morning and late evening are the safest times, and make sure to bring plenty of water!

Fun Fact Friday! These pictures are a before and after sample of Alar Fold Resection… also know as nostril widening or correction of stenotic nares. Many breeds, especially brachycephalic breeds, are born with this. Stenotic nares is when the nostrils are too close together. This can lead to nosy breathing, which is a sign of difficulty breathing. Sometimes they snore excessively, or can only breathe when they pant. This then can lead to intolerance to heat or intolerance to exercise, which is important especially in the summer!

They tend to recover quickly and easily from this surgery, and are often so much more comfortable! However, some brachycephalic dogs also require other surgeries to improve their ease in breathing, such as palate resection to get the same result. If you are worried about your brachycephalic dog’s comfort, please reach out!
