We're a little later harvesting this year because Josh got married (woo-hoo!), but the wait for 2020 sorghum is finally over! 2020 UJS is now in stock! Even though we have raised more this year than we have in years past, we are forecasting to be sold out by January 2021.

Place your order soon to ensure you get sorghum, or check out our website to find a retailer near you. We project to finish the year with roughly a couple thousand gallons of syrup, but it's already going quickly. We have a lot of pre-orders to fulfill and retail commitments to deliver. Online order fulfillment may take up to 7-14 days as we continue through the harvest season.

We've worked out better shipping rates, and you'll notice new, lower prices for our products online. Even though shipping is not free (orders over $50 receive free shipping), we are still able to deliver sorghum to your door cheaper than in the past. Preserving history.

This type of mill started being produced in the early 1800’s. They claimed that these mills were, “made of the highest quality cast iron free of flaws of any kind”. The craftsmanship of the rollers is truly amazing.

My father, Fred Stephens, has done a beautiful job restoring this mill, and he’s not finished yet! This mill will never be used again. It’s legacy, and the decades of memories the Rose family accumulated with it, will never diminish. Many thanks to the Rose family for allowing us to restore this beauty and add it to our collection. A small part of Appalachia Kentucky will live on forever in the ‘Sorghum Capital of the World’, Hancock County, Ky.

The mill will be on display at the farm. Any visitors this fall are welcome to check it out.

Now, what y’all have really been waiting for...
As for our 2019 crop, we’re a tad behind schedule. Mother Nature hasn’t played fair this spring. We’re a little over halfway finished planting. We apologize for not being active on social media so far this year. We’ve had to take full advantage of every second it wasn’t raining. You can now expect regular updates.

We wish the best to our fellow sorghum farmers, and all farmers across the nation. It’s been a tough spring for many. Our prayers go out to all the row crop farmers in the Midwest who may incur total crop losses this year.

I’ll leave you with a quote from my grandfather that I try my best to remember when things get tough. “I don’t farm for the money, I farm because I love doing it. The very worst day working my farm, is better than any day without it”.

It was a great honor sending one of Hancock County’s own, SSG Bertke, sorghum while she is deployed in Afghanistan. Her comrades had never tried sorghum. Being from the Sorghum Capital of the World, Tori wanted to change that. I was more than happy to help, Tori, and I hope you feel a little closer to home every time you open one of our sorghum jugs.

May God continue to watch over you, Tori, and all of your comrades, and bring each of you home safely. Thank you for your service and dedication to our great country, and for defending our American freedoms.

Our 2018 season is now complete. Our website will continue to be stocked, as well as many of our vendors. For questions about vendor locations, please message us.

Thank you to my family, for always providing your help and guidance. Six generations total, and three actively making sorghum. That’s pretty darn cool. Thank you to my friends, your support through text and social relieves a lot of stress throughout the year. Thank you to our local farming friends, who helped me find field laborers when our harvesting machine broke down. It’s been a tough, yet rewarding year, and I owe a lot of that you all.

Most importantly, I would like to give a huge thank you to all of the UJS fans, thank you for supporting us. Social media likes, comments, and shares go a long way for small businesses. Not just mine, but all small businesses. We’re all out here trying to engage with you. Those two seconds it takes to click the button, go a long way for us. I thank each of you for continually helping us expand our reach. With your help, we reached over 75,000 people this year, through Facebook alone! Our website traffic increased 43% this year! We shipped to the Middle East for the first time, as well as seven new (to us) states this year.

We plan to increase our production, and expand our reach to fulfill more vendor requests next year. I’m already counting down the days until begins.

I planted 15 acres of cane this spring, the most we’ve raised on for many years. Today, I’ve got the pan fired up one last time for 2018. It’s been a great year, and we’ve cooked some very delicious sorghum! Go out and get ya some before we’re sold out!

We finished up our field work this past week, and got over a thousand gallons of juice in cooler tanks. I’m taking a little break before cooking to meet my newest nephew, Benjamin. We’ll get the kitchen rockin’ again in a couple days, but for now, spending some time with family.

For many generations my family has been a staple in sorghum production in Hancock County, the “Sorghum Capital of the World”. I take a lot of pride in continuing that tradition. Thank you all for supporting our small business, and helping Hancock County retain this prestigious title!

Yesterday we invited Michael and his family out to spend the day harvesting cane and cooking sorghum with us. Michael contributed to our cookbook, and writes for many popular blogs and magazines. Check out Timber 2 Table, hosted on Realtree.com, where he makes a lot of recipes using our sorghum!

The kids were a great help, very respectful and hardworking. I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.

It’s a foggy morning in the cane fields today. This patch was a little too weedy for my liking. Instead of using our self-propelled machine that cuts and grinds in the field, I elected to hand cut and grind this field. Our machine is great, but it cuts and grinds anything in its way, including weeds.

While cooking sorghum, I’m constantly taking samples to test. The three main things I’m testing are; taste (my favorite) syrup clarity/cleanliness and sugar content.

This picture is what I call the “paper plate test”. I take a sample of syrup from the pan, and pour it over a plate. The plate is held over a light and if sorghum has any ‘specks’ in it, they are extremely visible this way.

From the field to jug, my juice, semi-syrup and syrup passes through 13 filters of different microns. A paper plate test that looks like this, makes me a happy sorghum cook.

This is just one of the small things we do to ensure we’re providing the highest quality of sorghum possible. Enjoy!

I got fired up early this morning, with two batches of juice, a little under 600 gallons, ready to go. The syrup started coming off the pan before the sun came up.

Big shout out to Rearden's Roofing for helping finish up and cover our new harvest building. They did quality work, and I’m very impressed with our new building. We’re planning to have it fully operational by the end of this season. If you have a building or another project you need help with, reach out to these guys!

You’ll notice the fields around the building are planted with soybeans. There’s two main reasons; 1) to help build our soil profile with crop diversity and 2) to help control the Sugar Cane Aphids with a natural approach. I’m working with another local farmer and friend to help manage these fields for a couple years. I’ll put these nine acres back into sorghum production in 2020.
