With the show season ramping up it is important to brush up on biosecurity protocols when at a show. This is especially important to keep all your horses healthy and safe during shows. There have been several Equine Herpes Virus outbreaks in the area.
Some quick tips include:
-Avoid any direct contact with other horses. One of the major transmission routes is nose-to-nose. It is best to avoid introducing your horse to others at the show grounds.
-Keep your equipment separate and avoid sharing with other horses at the show. This would include water buckets, wheel barrows, muck rakes, anything that comes into contact with your horse on a daily basis.
-Ensure your horse is up to date on vaccines and follow proper vaccination protocols.

Meet a recent Iverson Equine Graduate- iMac
iMac was first seen at our practice for white line disease in his RF that started out as a small separation but quickly progressed to significant separation and subsequent laminitis.
White line disease starts as a separation in the hoof wall brought on by environmental conditions, mechanical stress or metabolic factors. Opportunistic bacteria cause an infection in the separation which causes the separation of the hoof wall to continue upwards. If left untreated, it will often progress to laminitis and can be difficult to treat.
Luckily iMac had a great team to help him through. After consulting with a colleague that specialized in podiatry cases, iMac was treated with aggressive debridement of the hoof wall and placement of a supportive shoe. He then had daily attentive monitoring and care by our rehab team. Dr. Iverson created a detailed rehab plan and updated the plan to suit his needs as his recovery progressed.
After months of corrective shoeing and careful treatment, iMac began to have a more normal looking foot. His rotation was decreasing and the level of medial sinking was also improving. He was gradually taken out of his wedge shoe and hospital plate and he was fitted in a regular shoe with a small wedge and frog support. He was able to return to small paddock turnout and he is now enjoying his return to light work.

What all goes into creating a rehab plan?
There are numerous factors that go into creating a rehabilitation plan for a horse. Each horse must be evaluated and planned for individually to have the best plan. We all wish there was such thing as a cookie cutter plan to follow that ensured the best recovery every time. Unfortunately, that is not how it goes.
Each horse that comes to us is thoroughly evaluated and there are a lot of factors that are taken into account to create a unique rehabilitation plan for them. We take into account posture, areas of weakness/tension, hoof balance, temperament of the horse, age, and chronicity of the injury, history of past injuries or concurrent injuries, and current job of the horse and goals for the horse and owner. Each horse is then re-evaluated for their progress through recovery to determine if any changes need to be made to their current plan, if they can progress forward in their plan or need to back off. Rehabilitation is a constantly evolving process! It is important to trust the creation of your plan to a knowledgeable veterinarian or veterinarian certified in equine rehabilitation.
The benefit of rehabbing a horse at a rehab facility is a dedicated and knowledgeable team monitoring your horse's progress. Changes to the routine to suit your horse's needs are able to be done quickly if the need should arise. A calm environment that is made to assist in rehabilitating horses can help keep your horse calm through the process and there are many options available to help suit the needs of your horse as they progress through the program.

Re-posting with the current heat index warning, it is important to be vigilant about keeping our equine partners cool and prevent heat stroke.
Some signs of heat stroke include:
-Increased respiratory rate >40 breaths per minute that does not improve with short rest.
-Dry gums and mucus membranes
-lethargy
-Decreased gut sounds
Make sure you are working your horses in the cooler hours of the day and avoiding the hottest time of day. You can keep your horse cool with cool baths and ensuring access to plenty of clean water. Remember your horse does not have to fully cool down before drinking water and you can allow access to small amounts of water to help cool them down post exercise.
"a 1000lb horse not in work, not lactating, and not in high heat or humidity requires a minimum of 6 gallons of water a day. This doubles or triples in high heat and humidity, requiring no less than 12-16 gallons of water a day."
Check out the article below for more tips and information on keeping your horses healthy in the heat.

Does your horse suffer from back pain? Check out this hot off the press study by our own Dr. Marshall-Gibson!
As part of her board certification by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR), Dr. Marshall-Gibson investigated how veterinarians in the United States were diagnosing, treating and managing horses with primary equine back pain.
The main findings:
- "Respondents to this survey reported the percentage of ["kissing spine"] horses requiring follow up intervention post-surgery due to suspected recurrent back pain as much larger than previously reported."
- "The majority (82%) of respondents reported some level of improvement in clinical signs of primary back pain with rehabilitation alone."
- "Looking at modalities employed to manage equine back pain, the most common modalities reported to be effective in this study were less invasive modalities of chiropractic, acupuncture, shockwave, and rehabilitation."
If your horse is suffering from suspected primary back pain, don't hesitate to call our office to have our experienced sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarians examine or consult on your horse. All of our veterinarians are certified in chiropractic, acupuncture, provide shockwave services and can help design a specific rehabilitation program to address your horse's specific issues.

We are grateful for such amazing clients and the support they’ve given Dr. Iverson. Looking forward to what this next year will bring us.
Carrot stretches
You might have heard of these exercises referred to as "carrot stretches". This is a specific exercise aimed at improving flexibility, strength, and reducing pain through the neck and back. Some of the most helpful exercises in restoring mobility, function, and strength to neck and back are dynamic mobility exercises. These as the horse to move a specific joint/joints through the proper range of motion. We love adding these as needed into the daily routine of our rehabilitation horses and even our competing patients.
Some tips on how to get the most out of these exercises:
1. If your horse is overly treat motivated, use a less desirable treat. I.e. Instead of pulling out those really tasty carrots or peppermints, start with a handful of hay, or a low-starch treat to encourage them to come around. If the treat is super tasty, and your horse gets super excited, they will often throw their head and neck around in their haste to reach the treat. This can result in them not using the proper muscles to support and stretch the neck and thus defeat the purpose of the exercise.
2. If it is safe, stand at their shoulder and have them reach around you to get the treat. This typically encourages them to move through the full mobility of the neck and not tilt/drop their head to avoid the stretch.
3. Only ask your horse to go as far as they can properly do the exercise. Again, this encourages them to use the proper form when completing the exercise and thus get better results. You can gradually ask for more stretch over time.
