Today’s is Dustin. Dustin came to us from the Afghanistan and it is fair to say that Dustin is having a blast at TBL. He is always the life of the party. He has an affectionate, outgoing nature and he is ready to have some fun.

He is quick to greet new people. He may come on strong for some dogs, but he kennels with another dog and does fine with dogs in his play group. He is a handsome boy and full of personality, in a good way.

Dustin was saved by Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR) and came to The Barking Lot at the beginning of June. He is settling in well and making sure that all of the volunteers get their turn to pet him. Dustin could do well in most situations, with adequate exercise. Dustin is about a year old and around 50lbs. He has a soft, thick coat of white and cream colors. He is food motivated and a smart boy who should be fun to train. He is definitely ready to get a home of his own.

If you can’t adopt Dustin, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for him in their family.

If you are interested in Dustin or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is Platinum. Platinum is another dog that we can’t figure out why she hasn’t been snatched up. She is stunning to look at, has an outgoing and lively personality and she has an interesting history. She was rescued by Soi Dog in Thailand after she was abandoned and hit by car. Husky mixes are not the usual type of dog you find in Thailand, but somehow or another, there she was. She is now waiting patiently for her forever home. Platinum is 5 years old and right around 50lbs.

Platinum is a happy, energetic, affectionate dog who always has a smile on her face. She is a part husky so, she has the beautiful thick coat and gorgeous eyes that are common with the breed, but she is mixed with something else, so that tones down the loudness that also frequently comes with huskies. She also does not have the husky aloofness, she is all about making friends.

Platinum is a lot of fun. She will turn heads where ever she goes with her good looks, but then throw in that happy, affectionate personality and you have a combination that is hard to beat. We have no idea why she hasn’t been adopted. She has had no problem kenneling with other dogs and does fine in her play group.

If you can’t adopt Platinum, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for her in their family.

If you are interested in Platinum or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is Donnatello. Donnatello is another of the amazing dogs that we have taken in from Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR). You just need to look into his very expressive eyes to know how sweet and gentle this boy is. Donnatello is only a year old and a great medium size at 44lbs, He is very ready to start his life in the United States.

Donnatello looks a lot like a lab, but considering where he is from, it is hard to really know what breed mix made such a pretty dog. I really hope the lucky adopters of these dogs do the DNA tests and sends us the results. I am sure we are going to see some very interesting results.

Donnatello has a beautiful white coat, which is soft and thick. He has a very docile demeanor, gets along great with other dogs and loves affection. He might take a minute to come out of his shell, but he is food motivated, takes treats gently and seems to be trusting by nature.

Donnatello was rescued as a puppy from the streets of Afghanistan and nursed back to health by KSAR. He is now healthy and active, with a pleasant, moderate energy. He would be fine in a home with or without other dogs and he could thrive in a lot of living situations.

If you can’t adopt Donnatello, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for him in their family.

If you are interested in Donnatello or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is Nash. If you talk to any volunteer at The Barking Lot they will tell you what a great dog Nash is. He is affectionate, obedient, active, intelligent, playful, and handsome. I bet we could come up with a bunch of other adjectives to describe him, but that is a pretty good start.

Nash is a Doberman mix and would be most successful in a home that understands the breed, but he wants nothing more than to make his people happy. He is hoping that one of the things that makes his family happy though is a good game of fetch. Nash LOVES to play and definitely enjoys toys.

Nash is one of the dogs we have onsite that can kennel with almost any dog. He has an amiable personality and is very social. He has gone to breweries and adoption events and been a big hit. I think his breed puts some people off, but meet him and you will see what a great boy he is.

Nash is 4 years old and about 45lbs. He has a short, easy to maintain, shiny black coat, with the typical Doberman tan markings. He is housebroken and ready to find his forever family. His ideal home could be with or without another dogs, but he would like a human who is willing to throw the ball and take him on hikes.
If you can’t adopt Nash, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for him in their family

If you are interested in Nash or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is Xena. Xena is one of the amazing dogs we have taken in from Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR). Yup, Xena has made her way from Afghanistan to The Barking Lot. She is just over a year old and about 50lbs, and so ready to get started on her life here in United States.

Xena was rescued by KSAR with a wound on her back and they nursed her back to health. She has no trace of her old injury now and has the resiliency of youth. To meet her you would think she has never had a bad day. She greets people like they are old friends and always has a smile on her face.

Xena is an absolutely beautiful dog. They have her listed as a Saint Bernard, Afghan Hound mix, not every day you see a combination like that. She has a striking white coat with tri-colored markings. Her coat is very soft to the touch. She is very affectionate and does amazing with other dogs.

Xena would love to be part of an active family that could bring her along on adventures. She would be fine as an only dog or joining a pack. She currently hangs out with her friends from Kabul and seems to get along great with everyone. She has a nice, balanced disposition.

If you can’t adopt Xena, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for her in their family.

Today’s is Holiday. It is so hard to believe that a dog like Holiday would need this kind of post. When he first arrived at The Barking Lot in March we all thought he was going to be snatched up right away. With his scruffy good looks and his amiable personality, he is a true find.

Holiday is 2 years old and the best boy. He gets along with everyone, human and canine. He has such a unique and handsome look and is always up for adventure and fun. He was rescued by Soi Dog Foundation in Thailand after being abandoned, but he is not one to dwell on the past. Holiday could fit into almost any situation. He would make an excellent addition to any family. He would be fine as a single dog or could join a pack. He loves meeting people and great meeting new dogs.

Holiday is about 50lbs, has a striking, multicolored, scruffy coat and a perpetual smile on his face. He walks well on a leash, is housebroken, food motivated and is ready to start the next chapter of his life.

If you can’t adopt Holiday, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for him in their family

06/11/2024

For today’s we wanted to give you a first look at the dogs that have just arrived all the way from Kabul, Afghanistan. There was a massive effort undertaken to move 300 dogs and cats from Kabul to United States in hopes of these deserving animals having a chance at finding a home. So far, The Barking Lot has taken in 15 of these dogs. They started arriving last week and are settling in well.

These dogs are between medium and large and look to be an interesting mix of breeds. A little research identifies two breeds indigenous to Afghanistan, the Afghan Hound, of which many of these dogs seem to have some ancestry and a dog called the Kuchi Dog, which is also known as the Afghan Shepherd. There are several dogs that appear to have this as part of the ancestry as well. All bets are off as to what the other breeds are thrown into the mix, but the dogs are beautiful, many with soft, fluffy, colorful coats.

The dogs are all dog friendly and have no issues eating in groups. Some are a little jet lagged, so they need a moment to adjust to their new circumstances, but most, even given the stress of the travel and ending up in a completely new country, are adaptable and showing themselves to be very sweet and friendly.

If you are interested in adopting a dog with a both a unique look and a unique back story, check these guys out. We will be featuring the individual dogs in more detail as we get to know them, but please enjoy this first look and apply to adopt your favorite.

As always, please share this post so that we can get these dogs as much attention as possible and into their forever homes.

If you are interested any of the Kabul dogs or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is about Tabata (now Tofu)!

Here is an update from his mom:

“We renamed Tabata when he got here, the kids called him Tofu. I call him Tof of or Toffie! He's been doing a lot better with his play biting. He has also been doing much better with his aggression, I think when we first adopted him, he needed to learn his place on the chain of command. He would growl or nip anytime we'd try getting him to stop doing something that he wasn't supposed to. It took a long few months for him to feel at home, but I think he's a lot more comfortable now. He and Kaluah (our other doggy) get along great. He loves going to the beach and making new friends. And he learned a few new tricks as well. We have our routines and he's adjusted well here! Thank you again for working with me in getting him home to us.”

Today’s is Dalia. Are you looking for a sweet and gentle companion that gets along with everyone? Take a look at Dalia, she checks every box. She is just over 2 years old and a petite 32lbs. It is hard to imagine a more pleasant companion.

Dalia came to us from Mazatlan Animal Rescue last year, she was adopted a few months after her arrival, but was returned recently. It is not really clear why Dalia was returned, she is a very good dog. She can be a little shy to start, but her love can be bought with a few tasty treats. Once she trusts you, which seems to come pretty quickly with her, she will show you what an affectionate girl she is.

Dalia gets along great with other dogs, she kennels with another dog and shares the play yard with five other dogs, both bigger and smaller than her. She is housebroken, good with kids and could be added to a home with an existing dog or be an only dog. Based on her nature though she would benefit from either another dog in the house or regular play dates with friends.

Dalia is a house broken, good on a leash and knows basic commands. She is ready to go. If you can’t adopt Dalia, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for her in their family.

If you are interested in Dalia or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

05/28/2024

Today’s is Fringe. Fringe’s life has been filled with ups and downs. He came to the rescue as a puppy and was chosen for a family. Jump ahead 8 years and the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2023 we received a call from the Humane Society saying they found the poor guy, underweight and dragging a chain. The director of TBL rushed to pick him up so he didn’t have to spend Thanksgiving in the shelter.

Everyone loves Fringe. He, has the classic black lab personality, he was quickly picked for another family, but unfortunately due to no fault of his own, he was returned to TBL a few weeks ago. Fringe is an optimist though, he has a cheerful and open disposition and knows that his real family is still out there, waiting for him.

Fringe is one of the few dogs that would fit in with just about any of our play groups. He is a confident, balanced dog, that doesn’t let a few bad experiences get him down. He has the good looks of a lab, with something else thrown in for flavor. He has lived with kids and despite being 8, still has plenty of energy to hike and play. He has excellent leash manners and should quickly adjust to a new home. He would be a great dog for anyone who wants an easy, pre-trained dog that will almost immediately become part of the family. Fringe is pretty close to perfect.

If you can’t adopt Fringe, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for him in their family.

If you are interested in Fringe or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at thebarkinglot.net/adopt!

05/21/2024

Today’s is about a tragedy. In 2021 we rescued a large number of chihuahua/beagle mixed dogs from a hoarding situation. These dogs were kept in unsanitary and cramp conditions. We took in 16. This segues to today’s featured dogs. Violet and Dewdrop were two of the more timid dogs of this group. They are related, probably aunt/niece and they were picked by a kind woman who saw that beneath their nervous exterior that they were very sweet and in need of a patient home. She adopted them and loved them very much. Sadly, she has recently passed away.

Once again, Violet and Dewdrop are back at the rescue after 3 years of knowing the happiness and security of a loving home. They are bewildered about where that life has gone. Luckily, they are familiar with the routine at The Barking Lot, so that helps reduce the trauma, but we really want to get these girls back into a home as soon as possible. The good news for potential adopters is they should transition into a new situation quickly, especially if we can keep them together. Dewdrop is 4 years old and is a tiny little pup of about 12lbs, she is tricolor, with big soulful eyes. Violet is 6 years old and about 15lbs, she has the same soulful eyes, and is white with tan patches.

We feel bad for all of the dogs that that have to pass through a rescue, but these two little girls have had so much adversity in their lives and when things were finally going well for them, they were happy and well taken care of, that was ripped from them. They are sweet and scared and will need a chance to decompress, but they clearly have a lot of love to give.

If you can’t adopt Violet and Dewdrop, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for them in their family.

If you are interested in Violet and Dewdrop or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

🐶Today’s post is mostly about Pogo but also features his best bud and TBL alum, Kash!❤️

“I adopted Pogo in July of 2009. He’s been by my side ever since and is still going strong. His 16th birthday was on January 26th. When we lived in San Diego, he went everywhere with us (boating on the river, off-roading in Ocotillo and Glamis, chasing bioluminescence at Fiesta Island, boating on Mission Bay) and occasionally modeled for Petco! Pogo was also chosen to be in the TBL calendar one year!

In December 2013, we adopted Kash. Kash took to Pogo immediately, and Pogo tolerated him…though deep down Pogo needs Kash just as much as Kash needs Pogo.

Shortly after adopting Kash, we all moved to Texas and still reside here. Pogo is a survivor and has had some struggles in his days but has fought through with no looking back. First off, his namesake. In early 2009 his leg was removed due to some sort of injury incurred as a puppy before I adopted him…the story goes, that I made up, was that he got hit by a FedEx truck…reason for the story, he always barked at every and only FedEx trucks and drivers...UPS and USPS are fine. 2013, He got bit on the mouth by a rattlesnake in Yuma, received antivenin and pulled through. 2022, he got into some ant bait and suffered some neurological distress that temporarily affected his balance and sight. 2023, he got bit on the nose by, my best guess, a venomous insect. The site appeared necrotic but got better and took a month to heal. So, never a dull moment!

Pogo is still going strong! He still trots around the yard, still sits up on his hind legs when someone is making steak, though his days of rolling over for a treat are behind him. Maybe its his arthritis or maybe he got wise to the circus tricks. His hearing is just about gone and his declining eyesight makes it tough for him to catch treats anymore, but yes, he can still dig holes in the sand and he still loves to find a warm spot on the driveway in the sun, lay on his back and tan his belly. Kash and Pogo still are best buds and Pogo still tolerates Kash. Thanks to The Barking Lot and Stacy for making matches that have stood the test of time!”

Today’s is all about romance. You have a scruffy boy from Thailand, a sweet, shy girl from Cambodia, their paths converge at The Barking Lot rescue in San Diego and they fall in love.

Puddle is a handsome boy who came to us from our partner rescue Soi Dog. He has been adopted previously, but returned because he doesn’t like to be left alone. We have Maverick, a petite, sweet, very shy girl, from another of our partner rescues, Four Paws International, rescued from the dog meat trade in Cambodia. We have large kennels and most dogs like to share. We do some match making and sometimes it goes better than expected. That is how it is for Puddle and Maverick. They help each other so that each one is better when the other is around

It makes it hard because both of these dogs on their own are not easy to place. Puddle is a little older, he is 8, and Maverick, who is 4, is so shy she doesn’t show well and people miss her potential. However, the two of them together work. Maverick will still be shy, but with Puddle as her confidence booster, she can follow his lead, and Puddle with his girlfriend, won’t be alone. The two balance each other.

They are both housebroken, good with other dogs and easy to walk. They are a cute couple with an unusual history. They would be fine in any living situation and have medium exercise requirements. They are both favorites of the volunteers who have come to know them well. Maverick, when she gets comfortable, will roll over for belly rubs and Puddle absolutely loves attention and they both enjoy walks.

It is a lot to ask, especially when adoptions have been so slow anyway for someone to take in, not one, but two dogs, but the reward for keeping these two together will make it all worthwhile.

If you can’t adopt Puddle and Maverick, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for them in their family.

If you are interested in Puddle and Maverick or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt

Today’s is Wigbert. Wigbert is another amazing dog who came to us from our partner rescue Soi Dog, in Thailand. Wigbert was found as a puppy and brought to Soi Dog, she has made her way to The Barking Lot, arriving in March in search of her forever family.

Wigbert is about 1.5 years old, very young, but past the puppy stage. She would be great in almost any living situation. She is sweet and friendly, with a unique looking ridge on her back. She probably has some Thai Ridgeback in her. She is only about 20lbs a perfect size if you are looking for a smaller dog, but still one big enough to go with you on outdoor adventures.

Wigbert does great with other dogs and will wrestle and play and could easily be added to an existing pack, but would be fine on her own. She might show a little shy at first, but she will warm up very quickly. She is not super demanding, but definitely loves attention from her people. She is also very treat motivated and should be a breeze to train.

If you can’t adopt Wigbert, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for her in their family.

💕🐶💕Adoptable Banjo is a hiking superstar!🥾

He went on an outing with two adoring fans, and they report that besides being a great adventure buddy, he is also a cuddle bug who gives great kisses. 💋 💋💋

Banjo loves being right next to you or following closely behind while on the trail (on leash, of course!). Just be careful if you see quails or lizards. 🦎 He’s got zest for a playful game of chase.

04/12/2024

Today’s is Athens. We actually featured her a few months ago, right after she was returned for wagging her tail too hard. She is still amazing, still wagging her perfectly ordinary tail, and still waiting for a family to come pick her.

Athens is a beautiful, 8 year old, boxer mix. She gets along great with other dogs, is affectionate, fully trained and basically a ‘plug-and-play’ dog. She will fit right in to just about any living situation, with or without other dogs. She is fine with kids, fine with adults, basically seems to get along with everyone. She is graying around the muzzle, but don’t let that fool you, she is still energetic (not hyper), and fit. She could easily be a hiking buddy or go for some nice long walks.

It is sad that such a great dog, after living with what she believed was her forever family for four years, gets returned to the rescue for what every dog does, she wags her tail when she is excited. She is ready to shake off the past and give humans another chance. In this age, when adoptions are at an all-time low it makes it even harder for a dog with some years behind them to find a home, but for people looking for a dog that will just fit right in on the first day, you can’t beat an older dog. Athens is ready to go, just give her a soft bed, some pets and she is your new best friend.

If you can’t adopt Athens, please share this post so that hopefully someone out there will be able to make a place for her in their family.

If you are interested in Athens or any of our other amazing dogs please apply at thebarkinglot.net/adopt!

Today’s is about a very special boy, Telly (Telluride)! ♥️

Here’s what his mom says:
“Where to even start when talking about Telly?! Five days after he arrived he escaped through the screen in our living room window. After an hour of frantic pursuit, which ended up recruiting half the neighborhood, we finally tracked down our escapee. [*NOTE: He was wearing a GPS tracker, and they reached out to TBL right away for key advice!] Bringing him home we could tell he felt a little guilty about the whole ordeal. We think it was clear to him he was extremely loved and most definitely wanted.

It’s been one year now since that scary day. Now Telly escaping from the house would inevitably lead to him taking himself on his daily walk, sniff, and visit with his neighborhood cat friends before trotting back up to the front door for breakfast and a belly rub. It’s hard to believe such a great fellow was at TBL for so long! I guess he was just waiting for us to show up.

Telly was definitely a shy boy when he arrived (he still is when he wants to be), but his confidence has grown by leaps and bounds. Just ask all the other dogs at the park when they see him trotting around with his head held high like he’s the king of the park. His daily routine includes lots of walks, lots of sunbathing in the back yard, a morning belly rub on the couch and finishing out the day snoozing next to us watching tv with our two cats who he desperately wants to be best friends with. We love our sweet boy so much and he has done so much to enrich our lives. We can’t wait to see where he is in another year.”

We can’t wait either! He waited a long time for his perfect family to come along, and we couldn’t be happier that he truly is home!
