When I was first pitched this topic, I didn’t want to write about it. I’ve long since reached the saturation point for breeder bashing and didn’t want to write an adopt-don’t-shop fluff piece that disparages the hard work good breeders perform in bettering our hunting breeds. Alas, there are dogs which, through no fault of their own, require a second chance or at least a better home environment for their energy requirements. Check out some recommendations of what to expect and how to proceed with adopting a rescue bird dog in the link in my profile.

Raw diets are generally NOT recommended save for a small, select group of dog foodies with exceptionally high standards of food safety and cleanliness. But for a small subset of the pet population, limited raw ingredients *could* help manage some chronic health conditions. You just have to be comfortable with a lack of scientific support for their efficacy. Learn more at the link in my profile.

“If sharing food with our canine companions has been woven into the fabric of our collective DNA over generations, why does the act continue to fuel such controversy among pet owners and condemnation from veterinarians?”

Like bad company or political speeches, nothing lingers quite like the unmistakable scent of dog fur doused in skunk spray. If you own bird dogs long enough, you’ll likely have to deal with a skunk encounter. While the striking white-on-black markings and raised tail evolved as an aposematic...

Empathy, pride and the one-dimensional pursuit of monetary gain alone do not justify a foray into dog breeding. Have a read of this checklist before venturing into this challenging work.

“The fact that he’s the best dog you’ve ever seen or hunted over doesn’t provide enough justification, particularly if your sample size isn’t very large.” Prove me wrong. (Link in bio)

Your passion is our passion

Responsible breeders want a veterinarian they can trust; one who understands their unique needs and shares their attention to detail and commitment to excellence. Dr. Seth Bynum has a passion for animal reproduction (“theriogenology”) and has devoted his career to developing a specialty practice where breeders can find state-of-the-art services in this field. Dr. Bynum also shares his passion with students and serves as adjunct faculty in small animal theriogenology at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

A bird dog aficionado (@birddogvet), outdoorsman and former journalist, Dr. Bynum started On Point Reproduction Services to meet the growing demand for assisted reproduction medicine for breeders in his home state of Idaho, including Eastern Washington and Montana. When he’s not in the field, you’ll find Dr. Bynum at Hayden Pet Medical Center, a beautiful, modern and well-staffed facility in picturesque Northern Idaho where On Point Reproduction Services calls home.
