Here is a little pupdate on Zeus. He is putting weight on his back left leg and is walking with a limp. He’s doing much better than last week but his progress has slowed. I have started to taper his prednisone, he still takes gabapentin for pain and he continues to get acupuncture every other day. I’m hopeful for close to a full recovery but sadly I think our long walks on the trails might be over.
The bottom right picture is Zeus doing what he loves best, watching squirrels and chipmunks. It also shows how he has modified his stance to accommodate that left rear leg.

Yesterday after the first acupuncture treatment Zeus slept hard and snored loud. This is common in older dogs they are wiped out after. In western thinking the needle is reducing the passage of pain signals and stimulating blood flow to the area to promote healing and analgesia. In eastern thought we moved a large amount of Qi, started clearing Blood stagnation and tonified the Kidney. Just different ways to describe the same result. Today we will just do laser to let him rest a little and resume acupuncture tomorrow. He will continue on prednisone for inflammation and gabapentin for pain.

Meet Zeus a 13 yo dachshund who on Sunday became acutely lame in the hind end. He is my own dog and it was a scary morning. But I want to show how he is perfect for both western and eastern medicine. Yes he will be on a steroid but he has Cushings disease so he must be at a lower dose and a shorter duration. He will receive acupuncture every other day and also laser treatments. Surgery is gold standard but also extremely expensive. I will keep updating on his condition to inform all how acupuncture can be a valuable add on to western medicine and hopefully see how he improves. Fingers crossed

Meet Frida, our newest acupuncture recipient. She was adopted from Armenia where she was hit by a car leaving her unable to use both back legs. But she gets around just fine zipping around with her front legs.
We are working on her anxiety issues and her chronic diarrhea. She did very well for her first time. We started with a calming point to set the tone. We look forward to working with her.

Zeus got the full spa treatment today. The laser is treating a chronic ear infection problem. The acupuncture is helping with his skin and allergies. He has improved with less scaly skin, less itching and an overall better coat. And he got a nail trim so he can sneak around the house better to steal food. 😆
