With cold weather approaching, here are essential space heater safety tips to help protect you and your family:

Choosing a Space Heater:
1. Look for Safety Features: Choose a space heater with an automatic shut-off feature in case it tips over or overheats.
2. Check for Certification: Ensure the heater is certified by a recognized safety-testing organization, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories).

Using Your Space Heater Safely:
3. Keep it on a Flat Surface: Place the heater on a hard, level, non-flammable surface, such as a tile or hardwood floor.
4. Maintain Clearance: Keep at least 3 feet of space around the heater, away from flammable items like curtains, furniture, bedding, and paper.
5. Avoid High-Traffic Areas: Position the heater where it wonโ€™t be easily knocked over by pets, children, or foot traffic.

Electrical Safety:
6. Plug Directly into Wall Outlets: Avoid using extension cords or power strips, as they can overheat. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet.
7. Inspect Cords: Regularly check the power cord for fraying, cracking, or damage. Replace the heater if the cord is damaged.

Operating the Heater:
8. Turn Off When Unattended: Always turn off and unplug the heater when you leave the room or go to sleep.
9. Avoid Using in Wet Areas: Do not use space heaters in bathrooms or near water to prevent electrical shock.

Additional Safety Measures:
10. Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home. Test them monthly.
11. Keep It Clean: Dust and lint can accumulate in heaters, so clean them regularly to prevent overheating.

By following these safety measures, you can stay warm while reducing the risk of accidents or fire. Stay safe this winter!
