Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for domestic dogs and cats in the U.S.
and since November is National Pet Cancer
Awareness Month, And Senior pet Awareness Month, Wasatch Animal Clinic wants to spread the word to help educate pet owners about how best to protect their pets.

“Look for the three A’s: changes in appetite, activity, and attitude. Any time you see changes in these areas, we recommend taking your pet to your veterinarian to be evaluated.“-Quoted from 2024 Louisiana State University

Check your pet regularly for lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities, and schedule routine wellness exams so your medical team can track and monitor your pets health. When your vet is doing a routine wellness exam they are looking for skin pigment/coat changes, lumps all over your pet including in their mouth! Changes to the heart and lungs, ears and eyes, musculoskeletal, enlargedlymph nodes. And so much more. Although routine exams are very important you are your pets best advocate and you know them best any abnormal behaviors or notable changes should warrant care any time of the year!

With Senior Pet appreciation awareness month we advocate for all seniors pets to get senior wellness blood safety screening to go over comprehensive blood cell counts, extensive organ function, and some hormonal monitoring, at our clinic we also include urinalysis and microscopic evaluation in the senior labs to better understand your pets health further evaluating hydration levels, infections, diabetic conditions, and kidney functions. There is so much value in the senior wellness blood panel even when it comes back all within normal limits . That way if and when your pet does become ill, with sickness, disease processes, or hormonal imbalances we will have a trend of your pets normal values to compare the elevated or low values.

Doctor Hansen
Would like to remind clients on the importance of having a client patient relationship with your large animal pets just the same as you would your dogs or cats. The reasoning behind that is as a veterinarian they cannot give medical advice, prescribe medication, or diagnose your large animal. In order to do that the vet would have needed to at least establish a general wellness exam for this animal. For example, when you get your fair animals at the beginning of the year get on our books for a general wellness so you can just call the clinic and get medications, such as dewormers filled immediately with no hassle! Doctor Hansen has found a passion for helping during fair days as he has children of his own and lots of family who participate. He also values giving back to the community rather that be a donation to the kids who show him a dedication for FFA and 4-H , being a buyer and purchasing from participants, all the way down to vetting the animals and working with the State veterinarians, testing the winning livestock! He would also like to let his clients know he is happy to see cattle, llamas, swine, sheep, goats, chickens, and some equine. Now through January 2025 he is offering pregnancy checks for herds depending on quantity $3.50-$6.00 per head! Includes complimentary farm call!

Doctor salter and the importance of Equine floats~

Did you know your horse’s teeth continually erupt throughout their lives? This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to have your horse’s teeth examined regularly by your veterinarian. Their teeth are constantly changing!

Horses chew their food in a side-to-side or an elliptical manner. Because of this and the continual eruption of their teeth, horses’ teeth wear in certain patterns that can leave high and low spots and/or sharp, jagged edges. These abnormalities can cause pain and decreased grinding of food sources leading to decreased digestibility of food. Other signs of dental issues include weight loss, dropped clumps of poorly chewed food (aka quidding), long stems of hay or grass in manure (yes, you should be looking at their manure!), discharge from the nose or eye, a foul smell from the mouth or nose, or performances changes.

Floating a horse’s teeth is how your veterinarian corrects dental problems. Basically, a long file is used to file off any sharp points that may be causing pain or other issues within the mouth. The horse is sedated and a mouth speculum is used to inspect each tooth while allowing your veterinarian to also feel for any missing or loose teeth. Any problems can then be corrected while the horse is sedated.

Wishing our clients and their pets another happy and safe holiday! Please be mindful of your pets during this Halloween as many safety concerns are raised. Keep pets secured and in a safe place for the night. Always keep open flames out of pets reach. Never leave candy or other toxic foods out for your pets to ingest. And lastly never leave pets unsupervised in a costume! We will be in office regular hours all week! Bring your pet by for a treat not tricks!

Higher traffic outside and they thought the mailman was scary just wait until Beetlejuice is nocking at your door! And the case we see the most this holiday is your pets eating toxic foods. October is breast cancer awareness month and at Wasatch Animal clinic we wanted to remind our owners of some risks and signs or symptoms to watch for.
Times when you brush and pet your dogs at home are always a great time for you as the owner to do your own little exam on your pet. Finding and monitoring any lumps or bumps your pet may have. It’s also always important to keep your pet up to date on their annual exams so your veterinarian can scan and monitor your pets. The incidence of these tumors is related to whether a dog is intact or had/has been spayed. Dogs spayed prior to their first heat (also called estrus) have only a 0.5% risk of developing mammary tumor(s). However, after a first or second heat, this dramatically increases to a risk of 8% and 26%, respectively. Age also appears to play a role, the risk of tumor development significantly increases once a dog reaches seven years of age and continues increasing until 11–13 years of age. This increased risk is also breed-dependent, indicating that there is a genetic component. Aside from all this research and data the true cause and development of these tumors is not fully understood. If you notice any sudden or chronic changes in your pets health talk to your veterinarian about a medical plan for your pet! 🎀

Due to the local natural disaster we want to take the time to thank the local and wildlife firefighters who are working and risking their lives for our safety and the over all wellbeing of the area. When a natural disaster occurs it’s a time to reflect on plans and safety measures you have in place in your own home. You should always have an evacuation plan in place and ready to go for your family and pets.
This plan should include

•A safe place that has been approved for pets to reside in.
•Buddy system friends, family,or a neighbor should know your plan in the event you can’t get to your pet
•Pets should be microchipped, you should have a current picture of your pet, and your pet should have all documentation readily available in case of emergency.
•The plan should include a kit for first aid, feeding/water for 5-7 days, and ALWAYS a safe way to restrain your pet as they are scared too at these times! (Leashes,kennels)

Does air quality affect our pets?
Just like us, our pets are negatively impacted by air pollutants. With prolonged exposure, your pet could experience respiratory symptoms such as:
* Coughing
* Wheezing
* Shortness of breath
* Runny nose
* Eye irritation

Those with pre-existing conditions, like asthma, are at a higher risk in poor air conditions. They may experience stronger symptoms, and the pollutants can also exacerbate the symptoms of their current health conditions.

To help pets experiencing symptoms from bad air quality, you can limit their outdoor time, keep windows closed, use air purifiers, regularly clean your home, bathe your pet, and consider skipping the walk, hike, horse back ride or other outdoor activities on poor conditions. Monitor air quality alerts and avoid strenuous outdoor activities when pollution is high.
