Sometimes we see our pets weight as something to joke about “oh Garfield is just FLUFFY not fat” and “oh look at my potato” but what isn’t so funny is the health risks associated with obesity. Studies indicate that dogs with obesity live shorter lives than their normal-weight counterparts, about two years less.

Common weight-related disorders in dogs include:

•Osteoarthritis, cruciate ligament injuries, strains, sprains, and decreased mobility.

•Luxating patella (knee dislocation) due to cartilage damage

•Diabetes and other metabolic & endocrine disorders

•Respiratory disease

•High blood pressure

•Kidney disease

•Chronic inflammation

•depression

Excess weight in pets can lead to debilitating health issues, making weight management essential for a pet’s well-being. By working with your veterinary healthcare team and maintaining a healthy weight for your pets, you can help ensure a longer, happier life together. Reminder that some times pets just can’t help it and may be exhibiting symptoms of a greater concern such as hormonal imbalances or other health conditions that may predispose your pet to excess weight. That is why it’s always important to include your veterinarian on these matters.

January seems to be a good time for everyone to set goals Including your dog. January is national walk your dog month and Pet weight loss awareness month. We tend to want to hibernate in these elements, but our four legged companions don’t mind as long as they are with us. So put your best foot forward and walk towards your health and your pet’s best health!

Walking your dog has many benefits, including:
Mental health
Walking provides mental stimulation and exercise, and can boost your dog’s mood with endorphins.

Weight management
Regular walks can help your dog maintain a healthy weight and prevent obesity, which can lead to serious health issues.

Socialization
Walking provides a safe environment for your dog to socialize, and it’s also a chance for you to meet new people.
Digestive and urinary health
Walking helps your dog empty their bladder and aids digestion.

Prevents behavior issues
Walking helps burn off your dog’s energy, which can prevent destructive behaviors like chewing or rooting through the trash.

Bonding
Walking is a chance to spend time with your dog and explore new environments, which can strengthen your bond and foster trust and communication.

Winter safety tips ❄️

*If it’s too cold for you it’s probably also too cold for your pets. Limit time spent outside and if your pets are kept outside seasonally be sure to provide a safe place for them to regulate their temperature. With free and clear water daily!

*Massage petroleum jelly or other vet-approved paw protectants into paw pads before going outside to protect from salt and chemical agents. This also hydrates and creates a protective barrier for your pets! Their paws should be washed daily in the winter months!

* Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse.

*Thoroughly clean up any anitfreeze spills. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal for dogs and cats.

*Feed your pet a little extra in the winter months. Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime. This includes your livestock as well!

* Keep walkways and perimeters around your fence free and clear of snow! Added hight can allow pets to escape or put themselves in danger. Be sure to walk the perimeter and check for damage or other dangers. Keep snow level down to prevent escapes.

*Know your pets limits. If you have a smaller breed, senior pet, or pets with thin coats. Be extra mindful of the risks associated with cold temperatures.

Happy winter solstice everyone!

Last night my dog brought his ball over to me and I paused for a minute looking into his eager eyes and realized I didn’t remember the last time I threw his ball for him.
It’s a great reminder to slow down during the busy holidays and throw the ball.
It’s a reminder to get outside and breathe in some fresh air even when it’s cold!
And it’s a reminder that with the days being short it’s even shorter for your pets, so never miss the opportunity to throw the ball.

You have your hands full enough with potty training, teething piranha mouths, and crate training. Let’s not make it any harder on yourself, let us take care of your puppy’s health! What I love about this package is I could go in today for a routine exam and vaccinations and not get charged for an exam, go home and my puppy has an emergency like my son stepped on the little guy and he’s now limping. I could go back the same day as an emergency and be seen and still not have to pay for the emergency exam! It truly is such an amazing package!

SWIPE ➡️To see the results!

This is a pets PRE and POST surgery selfie , Doctor Salter did an amazing job opening these airways!

Now this patient will benefit from Improved breathing and oxygenation, Reduced snoring and respiratory effort, and Decreased risk of heatstroke and other respiratory complications.
After the surgery, the incisions heal on their own within about a month. The animal will need to wear an Elizabethan collar for 10 to 14 days to prevent self-trauma to the surgery site. Other than that they are walking out feeling like they can breathe!
