Are you guilty of a dirty dog/cat water and food bowl?
Did you know a study has shown that pet food and water bowls rank the 4th most contaminated item in a household. The bowls get what’s called a biofilm, a sticky, slimy, germ infested substance is a cozy environment for all sorts of bacteria and fungi to grow. Some of these organisms are disease-causing organisms, including E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and MRSA.

It can result in a weakened immunity and development of chronic diseases, such as urinary tract infections, dental disease, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease.

Stainless steel bowls have been found to be the best material to prevent this growth. But the only true prevention is to practice proper hygiene and clean your pets bowls often, and always provide fresh clean water daily.

Do you often times find your pet in one of these positions?
Does it also affect your pets attitude,
Stopping mid play session to itch themselves?

And up to 88% of people try 15 different home remedies before seeking professional care for itching. If the constant licking and scratching is enough to drive you nuts, just imagine how your pet feels! Causes for chronic itching can range from food and/or environmental allergies to parasites or nutritional needs. We would like to congratulate Dr. Jessica Salter our medical director for her recent accomplishments. She has worked hard and studied even harder to become board certified. She now has the letters DACVPM behind her name. Which stand for a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

What does it mean it be board certified?
A board-certified veterinary specialist is a veterinarian who has completed additional training in a specific area and has passed an examination that evaluates their knowledge and skills in that specialty. Board certification of preventative medicine is voluntary and demonstrates your exceptional expertise in the specialty. Certification reflects the critical core physician values of compassion, patient-centeredness and their passion for education.

Aside from being a Diplomate of the American Collage of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (Board-Certified). Jessie also has achieved her Masters of science in agriculture extension education, a masters of public health, and her Doctorate of veterinary medicine DVM. As well as being the Medical Director of Wasatch Animal Clinic.

We as a community are very proud and grateful to have someone who values their education, medical practice, and patient/client care as much as Doctor Salter does. Next time you see her in office congratulate her on these accomplishments and know that your pets are in good hands! 👏🏻

Rather you are up in the Unitas enjoying a camp fire or at home with a pumpkin scented candle and the glow of a fireplace you should always be prepared and aware of the dangers that can effect your furry friends. In light of pet fire safety awareness day we want to remind you of the hazards and how to keep your pets safe.

Here are some tips to keep your dog safe from fire at home:

Fireplace
Use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen on your fireplace and keep it in place. You can also create a “pet-free zone” at least 3 feet away from the fireplace. Even after the fire goes out, glass doors and screens can stay hot for hours.

Candles
Keep your dog away from candles and use flameless candles instead. Flameless candles look and smell like real candles, but they’re safer for pets.

Cooking
Don’t leave your dog unattended around cooking appliances. Extinguish any open flames before leaving your home.

Electrical cords
Watch your dog to make sure they don’t chew through electrical cords.

Smoke alarms
Consider getting a monitored smoke alarm that will alert a monitoring center if the alarm goes off.

Window cling
Put a pet alert window cling on your window that tells firefighters how many pets you have.

Emergency plan
Include your dog in your family emergency plan and practice taking them with you.

When you’re not home
Keep your dog in a space near an entry or exit point so they’re easier to rescue. Keep their leash near the door so you can lead them out safely if a fire breaks out.

Never leave pets around open flames in or outdoors!

At least 40% of dogs also have noise-related phobias, including fireworks, which can trigger a stress response that affects their overall health. dogs hear higher decibels and frequency’s than we do. This can cause temporary or permanent damage to their hearing. Please be mindful during this month. Some activities are not so fun for everyone.

Here are some tips to help keep your dog calm and safe during fireworks:

Exercise before dark
Make sure your dog has a chance to go for a walk and use the bathroom before the fireworks start. This can help them feel more relaxed.

Create a safe space
Give your dog access to a safe space with pillows, blankets, and their favorite toys. You can also try covering their crate with a blanket to make a cozy den.

Distract them
Try giving your dog treats to chew on, or play with them using familiar toys and games. You can also try white noise or music to help drown out the sounds.
Black out the room
This can help remove flashing lights and flares.

Stay home
Monitor your dog and be there to support them. If you have multiple dogs, you can separate the sound-sensitive ones from the others.

Consider medication
If your dog seems especially stressed, you can talk to a veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication.

And always be sure to have identification on your dog in case they get lost!

How hot is too hot for your furry companions ? Place the palm of your hand on the surface you will be walking your pet on firmly for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you then it is too hot for your pet. Another safety concern is dehydration and potential heat stroke which can be fatal. For instance when the air temperature reaches 86 degrees the asphalt temperature rises to 135 degrees! 🥵 although it’s fun to get out and enjoy this weather be mindful of your pet at the park, rodeos, or a lake day. Will there be shade provided to keep your pet from getting sunburned? Are you packing enough water for your pet? Will this stress my pet causing their internal temperature to rise as well? Can I keep their paws safe? Are all things you should think about before heading out the door on these hot days!
