Spagetti Eis ! A German invention is 55 years old today.

Spaghetti with vanilla “noodles”, fresh strawberry “tomato sauce”, and white chocolate or coconut “parmesan cheese.”

Spaghetti-Eis, one of the country's most popular varieties of ice cream... Germans enjoy about 25 million servings every year.

Seventeen year old Dario Fontanella came up with the idea, and served the first spaghetti ice cream on April 6, an Easter Sunday, 55 years ago in his father's Mannheim ice cream parlour.

Vanilla ice cream "spaghetti", served on a layer of cream, decked with red strawberry sauce, and white chocolate or coconut.

And how can you make it at home? Like this:

For four portions...

200g-1 cup strawberries
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
50g-2 oz white chocolate shavings or desiccated coconut.
120g-1/2 cup whipped cream
12 scoops of vanilla ice cream

Wash the strawberries, remove stalks, cut them into small cubes and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Leave to stand for 30 minutes. Then puree with a hand blender.

Make fine shavings from the chocolate with a potato peeler and chill.
(If using coconut it is easier to get it ready to use)

Whip the cream until stiff and divide between 4 dishes.

Press 3 scoops of ice cream through a Spätzle or potato ricer over the cream mounds.

Pour strawberry sauce over the ice cream and garnish with chocolate or coconut...

Apparently when Dario Fontanella first served the dessert to children they cried because they wanted ice cream and not what appeared to be a bowl of spaghetti. 🙂

Some tips... The strawberry sauce can be made from couple hours to a couple days ahead and stored in the fridge. While the heavy cream can be whipped a few hours before.

But only make the ice cream pasta when you are ready to serve, as it melts quickly.

And place the press in the freezer beforehand so that it cools thoroughly. This will prevent the ice cream from melting immediately and the "spaghetti" will be perfect.

If the ice cream from the press does not have a spaghetti noodle shape, either the ice cream or the press/ricer is not cold enough.

Dario Fontanella still produces ice cream in his Mannheim ice-cream parlour. Together with his five employees, and without using any emulsifiers, colourants or chemicals.

What would you be willing to risk for the potential to have it all?

You kissed me like no other. The electricity and passion I felt between us in those moments crushed everyone who had come before you. At one point, you were untouchable, but at least for tonight, you were all mine. Tonight, there were moments shared and an understanding between us that opened my eyes in so many ways, just like your fingers did when they made their way around my skin and into my body. Fingers can be tricky; you definitely need to watch where they are traveling.

You never know where you will end up, but in my experience, it always leads to pleasure. I welcomed you in to touch my body. I welcomed you in to ravish my soul. I welcomed you into my twisted little world. I welcomed you in and warned you that it would not be easy to leave. You told me one thing I needed to hear to make that night unforgettable ~ you said. . . that you would always stay and I would never be alone again. And you were right; we figure out every day how to make this work. We figure out every day how to live our dreams and exist in our worlds together.

And tonight, as I slipped on my coat, it still smelled like you. All at once you flooded my memories. In that split second, I knew I’d give up everything. Your smell, your cologne, permeated my nose and I hope my coat smells like you forever.

Two years
Time
A long time
One day
Never

Talk to anyone about moving through and beyond grief, and you’ll receive a different answer.

The Dr I saw this morning said two years minimum.

Some say a long time, some hesitantly say perhaps one day, and I imagine there are times when never is the most honest answer someone grieving has to give.

Perhaps time is the answer without being an answer.

Time allows us to empty and fill, to feel and let go, to shrink and grow.

It allows many steps, many pauses, silence and sound.

And from all that, we feel ourselves slowly growing into something new.

We become stronger and bigger yet also softer, and lighter.

We have entered another of life’s transformative cocoons.

And we wait to emerge.

How long?
When?

No one knows
I don’t know

So, I ask the steady, still presence that is always with me.

And the answer;

There is no time, little butterfly

But you’ll know when to fly
