Hedgesville Hounds

Hedgesville Hounds www.hedgesvillehounds.com The Hedgesville Hound group is an all breed dog rescue that was formally established in 2003. Hedgesville Hounds exist everywhere.

We are a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of people who have several decades of combined experience and a general love for animals. Although there is a Hedgesville, and we have definitely placed a fair number of hounds in homes, the term Hedgesville Hounds has become more emblematic than actual. It has its origins in one specific rescue that became quite inspirational to a number of volunteers. It

has since captured in its scope the determination of many people with a common interest - dogs - and an uncommon commitment to helping them. What began as an effort to help a single group of dogs in terrible need, gained momentum as these dogs were successfully placed in wonderful homes. The dogs became a kind of rallying cry, a challenge, and a cause. They are dogs of every breed - every size - every age - who by circumstance, ignorance, or cruelty and neglect, were put at risk. Sometimes they are cats, and even rabbits. Our effort has been quite simple - to give them a voice. And a little help with arrangements. And then let these wonderful creatures do the rest.

COURTESY POSTING: Bonded pair needs rehomed, please share.....

Please no judgemental comments. This is a very difficult situation for this family.

Hi there, my name is Jo and I am helping my son rehome his two wonderful dogs. They come from a loving home and giving them up is incredibly painful for our son and for us. Here is the situation: Our son owns his own home on an acre of land but is struggling with some health issues. He is no longer employed and needs to sell his house and move back in with us. We are not able to take in and handle the responsibility of his dogs on top of our own animals and caring for our son.

Both dogs are very bonded and need to be adopted together. They are both very active and need a fenced-in yard and plenty of exercise. They are very good at playing together. Both have attended doggie daycare on occasions at a farm and they participate in the large group play with lots of other dogs without any difficulty.

Nina is the white one - approx 2.5 years old, around 45lbs, and is a rescue. DNA by test Embark 100% Pitbull Terrier. Spayed. Microchipped. Up-to-date on all vaccinations and records will be given to new owners. Takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm meds. Takes 1/2 tablet of apoquel daily for allergies. Housetrained. A very sweet bundle of joy, fun and high energy. Nina loves going on hikes, car rides, will jump into any body of water or mud! She loves to play outside with her toys and will settle down and snuggle with you when it’s time for some relaxation. She loves to sleep close to you at night. Nina knows all basic commands and is fantastic with other dogs and all people. Nina is not cat friendly, she has been cat-tested. Nina has never expressed any sign of aggression. She just wants to please you and her tail never stops wagging. Nina can be left for short periods at home and has shown no signs of destruction. Nina loves everyone, she does love to charge around so small children may not be the best fit in case she accidentally knocked them over but it would not be intentional.

Winston color black and white - approx 2 years old, around 65lbs. Maybe a Boxer Mix. No DNA done. Neutered. Microchipped. Up-to-date on all vaccinations and records will be given to new owners. Takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm meds. Takes 1/2 tablet of apoquel daily for allergies. Housetrained. Winston loves his people, is a very loyal companion and will stay close to your side. He loves to go on hikes and is very dog-friendly. He loves his toys and loves to play tug whether it be with a human friend or a doggie friend. He loves to snuggle and will nestle up with you at night time. Winston is not cat-friendly, he has been cat-tested. For the most part Winston is very quiet but he does sometimes bark at things if he’s unsure. Winston knows basic commands and is very eager to please. Winston can be left for short periods and has shown no signs of destruction. Winston just adores people and has never shown any sign of aggression, a total love bug.

If you are interested in learning more about Nina and Winston, please email Jo at [email protected]

These dogs are not in our possession - this is a courtesy posting.

ADOPTED!!!

Please continue to share Phoebe to help us find her forever home!!
Now that she is fully vaccinated and healed from her spay, she was able to go on her first adventure! She was fabulous in the car, did really well on the leash, and showed only curiosity with people, bikes, kids, and dogs. She and Kiwi were tired girls on the way home! (pictures in comments)

COURTESY POST:
Mila is looking for a new home:
This is Mila, she is 3 years old and will be 4 in October. She is a red-nosed pitbull. She is spayed and her vaccination record will be provided to her adopter. Mila needs a home that can give her the time and attention she needs as an active, young dog. She is currently in a loving home, but one that due to circumstances, is no longer able to keep her. Her current owner says she is the most lovable pup. They report that Mila is good with other pets and she does amazing with children.

If you are interested in learning more about Mila or adopting Mila, please contact: [email protected]

This dog needs to be rehomed as his family is facing an unstable housing situation. If you are interested in adopting him, please contact the owner directly. Hedgesville Hounds does not have this dog - he is with his owner and we are assisting with advertising. Please contact Ivory at [email protected]

A note from the owner:
He is about 5-6 years old, mixed breed, and he is not neutered or up to date with his shots. I’m not sure how he is with other animals as we haven’t had him around any others except when we had his mother and sister. I’m also unsure how he’ll act around new people, he does well with my siblings and children but he’s been around them his (or their) whole life. He was not housebroken or crate-trained but he stayed outside.

COURTESY POST: Please email [email protected] if interested.

Dart - Domestic short-hair tabby cat - male/neutered - young (3-4 years vet’s best guess) - 10 pounds

Dart is a character. A beautiful fellow - his coat is a blend of beige and grey and soft brown.

Dart would never make this claim about himself, but, for the purposes of adoptive placement he is a “special needs cat” due to testing positive for FIV. From all other perspectives he is healthy cat with a robust appetite, fastidious manners in respect to his litter box, and a comically transparent personality. His greatest need is a home.

BACK STORY

Dart was dropped off in the woods across from our farm sometime in February, and at first we caught only glimpses of him. We did our best to keep a look-out for him. We realized that during the infrequent times he presented himself to us, he always paused for a moment of full eye contact with us before he darted off (hence his name), and we decided that he was watching us as intently as we were watching him.

We made it a point to place kibble and water in the most theatrical manner possible - under the eaves of our workshop, and in the barn, where we also placed a warm bed inside a felt hut. We hoped that Dart had watched our performances and would avail himself of shelter and food.

Which he did, and eventually he abandoned wherever he had been living in the woods and moved across the street to our farm.
He continued to keep us under careful, close observation, but, over time, he allowed the distance he kept from us to shorten, and the time he spent staring at us before he darted away to lengthen. We began to call to him softly, “kitty kitty kitty,"

Finally we felt it was the right time to place a humane trap near one of his feeding sites, and hope for the best. He surrendered to it within 5 minutes, and when we approached him to bring him inside, he did not thrash about or seem afraid.

It occurred to us that Dart had been directing the entire proceedings of the past few weeks, and we had been slow-witted actors who finally understood our parts.

At any rate, Dart was clearly quite relieved to be safely indoors. He seemed very tired, and just grateful to be warm and under cover.

We were fortunate to get a veterinary appointment the following day. Of course we were disappointed to learn that he had tested positive for FIV, but glad to learn that he had not tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Our vet said that Dart was in good condition, and that the call was up to us as to what our next steps should be. We learned that cats with FIV can lead long, healthy lives, but that their placement opportunities are limited; they need to be placed adoptively as singletons, or with another FIV positive cat.

We elected to move forward with Dart’s neuter and vaccinations, and bring him home.

Dart now occupies his own small bedroom in our house, a management arrangement necessary to protect our own three cats.

Dart’s room is fully outfitted with scratching hammock, litter box, food and water, and a number of treasured toys with which he plays joyfully and vigorously.

He uses his litter box religiously, and does not scratch or pick at the coverings on the bed. Clearly Dart had been an indoor cat in his former life before he was discarded to the woods.

The most endearing aspect of Dart to us is how greatly he yearns for companionship, and how insistent he is on making his terms fully understood. In this respect we have become quick studies, happy to comply with Dart’s terms and process.

WHAT MAKES DART A CHARACTER

From the onset it was obvious, even to a human, that Dart was eager - almost abjectly so - for attention and touch. Initially, he allowed his head only to be petted, and occasionally these attentions were rewarded by a brisk swat from Dart. Sometimes he sheathed his claws. Sometimes not. Clearly two opposing needs were warring inside Dart.

The solution was a $1.00 bamboo back scratcher. This instrument allowed us to pet Dart, and Dart to self-pet - all from a safe distance. Dart was quite pleased by our ingenuity, and over the course of a few weeks, he allowed us to pet not only his head, but his shoulders, then his back, and tail with the scratcher. At times Dart enjoys a full-body scratch so much that he will just fall over in a frenzy of purring.

Now he curls up with one of us on the bed in his room to take a nap, and allows us to pick him up and carry him back to his room when he darts through his door to explore the rest of the house. During these excursions outside his room, he marches around with his tail held straight up - he does not seem remotely concerned about our dogs.

It is clear to us that Dart yearns to be a full-fledged part of our lives, and we are hoping that there is an adopter out there who will love Dart as much as we do, and provide him a home with full membership privileges. He is so ready for this, and he so deserves it.

Dart is fully vetted. He free-feeds cat kibble and is overjoyed by a small daily ration of canned cat food. He is clean, and non-destructive.

If you are interested in adopting him, or if you have any questions, please contact us directly at [email protected].

Gretchen is a seven year old German Spaniel, purebred but not an AKC recognized breed. She's spayed and up to date with vaccinations. She's a lovely dog who gets along with everyone and everything - even ducks, which is a surprise as the German Spaniel was bred to be a hunting dog. Her primary caregiver died suddenly, and the family would like to find her a new home. A genuinely all around great dog, who loves to hang out with her people. She's wonderful with children. She's low-ish energy, docile, friendly, and intelligent. She weighs about 45 lbs. She has some allergies (chicken, tree nuts) which are easily managed with Zyrtec.

Bella is a cross post. To learn more, please contact Contact Helen at [email protected].

Bella - young adult, mixed breed, maybe a mix of Catahoula and Pit or maybe Anatolian Shepherd and Pit with a smidgen of great dane in there. She is just over 1 year old.

Sweet Bella needs rehomed. Adopted from a rural shelter in southern Alabama after being abandoned, she is not getting along with one of the older, smaller resident dogs and her owners want only the best life for her.

Bella is spayed and UTD on rabies. She is on a year round heartworm and flea preventative. Bella is crate trained and goes in with no fuss. She does not howl or cry when we leave the house and while she does get excited when we come home she will generally wait patiently to be liberated. She is OK on the leash, but still learning.

She is completely housebroken. Because of her high energy, she would do best with older children. She is very bouncy. Bella is fine with the resident cats. She has done well with larger dogs, but picks on smaller dogs.

Bella is very high energy and needs a lot of physical exercise. She loves being outside in all weather and she loves to swim and chase the hose spray. She should thrive in a home with another dog provided that dog is bigger than she is and is confident, mellow and likes to play.

Bella is not a good candidate for a first time dog owner. She is somewhat stubborn and does require consistent calm corrections with regard to trying to climb on you or jump up on the fence to demand attention. She is a little pushy when she wants attention.

Bella is healthy and has no medical issues. She is located in Southern Alabama. Her family is willing to bring her up to the DMV / WV area for the right adopter. Contact Helen at [email protected] if you are interested in adopting her.
