APRIL IS HEARTWORM AWARENESS MONTH❤️
Heartworm disease is a very serious and potentially fatal condition in dogs and cats, especially in the state of Alabama. Heart worms are carried by mosquitoes and infect a dog once they are bitten by an infected mosquito carrying microscopic, heartworm larvae (juvenile worms) called Dirofaria Immitis. 🪱🧫

These microscopic larvae are deposited by mosquitoes and migrate to the dog’s bloodstream. These worms can grow between 10 to 12 inches in length and make their home in the right side of the heart and pulmonary (lung) arteries, often causing lung disease and heart failure when left untreated.

Due to Alabama‘s warm and humid climate, mosquitoes are typically found year-round within the state. This means that heartworm disease is very prevalent throughout the ENTIRE year in the southern United States. 🌦️🦟
