The LCHS is a private, community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides shelter for unwanted and stray animals (primarily dogs and cats) while working to end pet overpopulation, reduce the need for euthanasia, and improve the humane treatment and well-being of companion animals. It serves a population of roughly 70,000 residents in southwestern Montana and a service area covering roughly

5,500 square miles. Since its creation in 1964, LCHS has continued to grow and expand its facilities and programs along with the growth of the community. In an effort to decrease the amount of animals that come through the shelter, we work tirelessly to make sure the pets in our community are vaccinated and spayed and neutered while in our care. LCHS also has a comprehensive foster care program - including day-trips and sleepovers - in order to help meet the needs of all the animals in our care while they wait for their forever homes. We also have multiple specialized personnel who work to socialize, exercise, and train animals in our care, in order to provide the best quality of life for the animals. Hi everyone, Nutella here!

I know, I know, you're wondering why I'm still here at LCHS, and to be honest, I am too! I know I can be a bit unsure of new people, but everyone at the shelter keeps telling me how amazing and silly I am, and I just don't understand why I haven't found my human yet!

Listen, I definitely love my friends at the shelter; they give me treats, and take me for walks, and tell me how pretty I am, but I'm eager to get out of the shelter and finally find a home. Maybe you can help?

My shelter humans said they've been trying to find a foster or a forever home for me. It will take a few visits for me to get comfortable enough to go home with a foster or adopter but I promise, I'm worth it!

Here's what else you should know about me:
-I'm looking for a home without young kids, cats, or dogs.
-I may be open to sharing my space with older, respectful kids (I can get a bit overwhelmed when there's too much going on or if people get into my space too quickly)
-I love getting treats (getting treats is my love language!)
-I love the snow! My shelter humans are always giggling when they see me run and play in the snow!

Hi there… it’s me, Bandit.

I’ve been trying to be patient. Watching as people walk past my kennel every day, hoping—just maybe—someone will stop and see me. But…they don’t. And I don’t understand why.

I’m a little shy at first, but I promise I’m a good boy. I have so much love to give, so many snuggles waiting, and so many adventures I’m dreaming of. But for now, it’s just me. Sitting behind these bars, wondering when it will finally be my turn.

I know the perfect family is out there. Maybe they haven’t found me yet. Maybe they don’t know how much I need them. But I believe in happy endings. I believe that someone, somewhere, will see this and and just know, “That’s him. That’s our boy.”

Until then, I’ll be waiting.

Please… come meet me. Give me a chance. Let me show you how much love I have in my heart.

To our amazing community,

As you might have heard by now, on a freezing blizzarding day last week, 33 dogs were seized by the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Department due to an alleged cruelty situation. Unfortunately, one of the dogs on the property s was already deceased. 32 dogs were transferred to LCHS as the designated holding facility. Our facility is only made to hold 50 dogs at most, and we now have 32 just from this case alone. At this time we aren’t sure how long they’re going to have to remain in our care. We’re making sure the dogs have what they need and get the best care possible, but we will quickly feel the strain of housing this many dogs for an unknown period of time.

Here’s how you can help right now:

If you've been to the shelter at all in the past 2 1/2 months, you may have seen Nutella. She's a unique dog who's desperate for a second chance, but the shelter environment is too overwhelming for her, and she's too unsure of everything to be her true self. While we love Nutella (she's personally my favorite dog, but don't tell the others ;) ), we would love it even more if she was in a home and not stuck here at LCHS. So, we are looking for a foster home (or adoptive home!!) who can help her get the shelter break she's after.

What do you need to know about Nutella?

Well, she's a sweet and loving pup who just needs a little extra time to trust new people. Right now, shelter life is overwhelming for her, and she’s looking for a patient foster who will visit her a few times to build a bond before bringing her home.

Once Nutella knows you, she is the most affectionate girl—she’ll shower you with kisses and happily play with her favorite toys. She just needs a calm, understanding home to help her feel safe and loved.

Her ideal foster home:
✅A quiet home without young kids, cats, or other dogs
✅She may be open to sharing her space with older, respectful kids
✅Someone willing to visit her at the shelter a few times to earn her trust
✅Someone who will give her her favorite thing - treats!

With all this cold, wet weather, we’ve been working overtime to keep our shelter clean and cozy for our animals—which means we’re out of towels AGAIN! 😱

🍫 World Nutella Day: The Perfect Time to Meet… Nutella! 🐶

Hello, lovely humans. It’s me, Nutella—the sweet, lovable pup who’s been waiting way too long for my forever home. And today? It’s WORLD NUTELLA DAY. A day dedicated to me! (Okay, fine, maybe the chocolate stuff too, but let’s be real—I’m way better.)

Here’s the thing: I’m sweet as can be once I know you, but I can be a little shy when meeting new people. I just need a little time to warm up, and once I do? You’ll have a best friend for life. I adore my humans, I’m learning to be more social with other dogs, and I may do well with the right fit. I’m putting in the work—now I just need someone willing to meet me halfway.

Yet, somehow… I’m still here. Watching other dogs leave while I keep waiting. 😔 Do you know how that feels? (Spoiler: It’s not great.)

Hello, humans. It’s me, Glinda—the gorgeous, goofy, and slightly sassy feline who’s been waiting (and waiting… and waiting) for someone to notice how spectacular I am.

Look, I see you scrolling past my profile. I hear you saying, “Oh, she’s cute!” before moving on. But you haven’t inquired about me. Not even once! Do you know how that makes a cat feel?!

I’m hilarious, I’m full of personality, and I adore people. Like, truly—snuggles, chats, and all the attention? I’m here for it. Other cats? I can tolerate them. Mellow or older dogs? Fine, I’ll allow it. But mostly, I just want a home. A cozy, love-filled, treat-giving home.

Maybe you just need to meet me to understand. Maybe you don’t realize yet that I’m exactly the cat you’ve been missing. But here’s the thing: I’m done waiting for “maybe.”

Hi, It’s Me, Buffy… Did Santa Forget About Me? https://secure.qgiv.com/for/christmascampaign I’ve been watching all my shelter friends get the most amazing surprises this week—stockings full of treats, toys, and so much love. Their tails wag, their purrs get louder, and their smiles light up the room. It’s been so wonderful to see… but my stocking is still empty. My people are telling me that not even one person has donated to fill give me Christmas presents....what did I do wrong? I’ve been in the shelter's care for 72 days now, waiting patiently for my wonderful life to begin. I know I’m a little shy and take my time to trust, but I promise I’m worth it. I dream of a soft blanket, a jingly toy, and maybe even a few tasty snacks just for me. I’m trying not to feel forgotten, but it’s hard not to wonder… could there be someone out there who believes I deserve a little Christmas magic too? Thanksgiving came early for the animals in our care, as most of them are enjoying the holiday in a foster home for the Home for the Paw-lidays Foster Event! Our staff certainly had a great time cookin' up something tasty for the animals tho! And boy did they love the special treat! This Thanksgiving, our hearts are full of gratitude for you, our incredible community of supporters. Your kindness and generosity make it possible for us to continue our mission, and we are endlessly thankful for all you do to help us make a difference.
