I like working gates from horse back, it gives purpose to some of the lateral maneuvers i use. It’s also a great place to teach my horse to wait on me while allowing him to accomplish a job. Sound on. Paddingtons first time on the pro cutter. I think we are at ride number 10. When i first start horses on cows or this tool I’m mostly after desire. I want to let the horse handle as much as they can and help them only when necessary. That means allowing them to make a small mistake, then showing them why they should pay a little more attention. If you are always the “boss” you’ll get a horse that has to be told what to do because you always shut down their ideas. That’s not my goal, i prefer not to ride my horses that way, for i surely don’t like that sort of treatment myself. Today was the first time i got to put the boys on a sled like dummy. I’m mostly worried about the horse finding the proper position and being able to hold it. I’m not an experienced team roper at all, but i can figure out how to get a horse to put me where i need to be. The long trot, the gait that gets you places, conditions your horse, and will allow you to cover country all day. The trot is a two beat gate. The horse operates on a diagonal when done properly. The left hind and the right front go in unison while the right hind and left front follow suit on the second beat. Here i am posting the long trot, demonstrating switching diagonals, and showing you a few transitions. When you are working on this feel down to the feet, lengthen them, shorten them, change the speeds, and most of all be worth working for!
