Responsible Dog Ownership Month

It’s been said that the best bargain humans ever made was with dogs: we give them our leftover food and time, and they give us everything. Of course, we know now that if a dog is going to live a healthy, long life, they need a bit more to keep them safe and healthy. September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. Think you’re a responsible dog owner? Run down the checklist below and find out!

*My dog sees the vet at least once per year for a routine check-up and vaccinations.
*My dog is microchipped and is wearing external identification.
*I have a way to pay for emergency veterinary expenses if my dog gets suddenly sick or injured.
*I have a plan for my pet is there’s a natural disaster, emergency, or if something should happen to me and I can’t care for him or her.
*My dog gets enough exercise and mental stimulation nearly every day.
*My dog has a place where he or she can be safe and warm and protected from the elements.
*My dog does not live most of his or her life on a chain or confined to a small area.

If you answered Yes to most of these questions, it’s a good bet you have one lucky dog! If you need help answering yes to all of them, reach out to us for resources and ideas to help you and your pet! 702-476-8812

August 22nd Is Take Your Cat to the Vet Day

According to the American Humane Society, our feline companions go to the veterinarian about half as often as dogs. Many people only take their cat to the vet when he or she is sick—and often, that illness might have been avoided with preventive care.

While it’s true that cats can be low-maintenance pets compared to dogs, they still need routine wellness care including exams, vaccines and preventive medications to stay healthy. Plus, when we see cats regularly, we establish a baseline for their health and can often identify changes and diagnose diseases before they get too serious. Felines are very adept at hiding illness and injury, so they may have been suffering a long time before you know it.

So—how long has it been since your cat saw the vet? If it’s been over a year (or you can’t remember!) schedule an appointment online at https://sevenhillslv.pet/or call us at 702-476-8812 today!

National Immunization Month: Your Questions About Vaccinations–Answered!

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, created to remind people how important it is to keep their vaccinations up to date. But that advice isn’t just for humans—it’s vital for pets as well.

Vaccinating your pet is a relatively inexpensive but very important way to protect his or her health. In addition to preventing many life-threatening illnesses, vaccinations can keep your pet and family safe from diseases prevalent in wildlife and those that can be passed to humans.

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we get about vaccinations:

Q: Are vaccines safe?

A: There is a risk associated with all medical procedures, but serious reactions from vaccines are rare. Given the fact that vaccinations have protected millions of animals from illness and death caused by disease, the benefit far outweighs any risk. At Seven Hills Pet Hospital, we have seen VERY FEW adverse reactions and it’s our policy to minimize any risk by spacing out the administration of “killed vaccines”, which are the ones more likely to cause a reaction.

Q: Why is it important to vaccinate?

A: Vaccinations are your pet’s first line of defense and can also keep them from transmitting some diseases to your family. Scientific evidence proves that the widespread use of vaccines in the last century has prevented death and disease in millions of animals. Even diseases that have become uncommon can still be present in the environment and if pets aren’t protected, they can initiate an outbreak.

Q: Which vaccines does my pet need?

A: “Core” vaccines are those recommended—and possibly mandated by law—for most pets. Core vaccines include:

-Rabies (dogs and cats)
-DA2PPV – Distemper, Hepatitis, Adenovirus 2, Parvo and Parainfluenza (dogs)
-FVRCP – Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia (cats)
-Other non-core, but highly suggested vaccinations for outdoor cats include FIV for feline immunodeficiency virus and FeLV to protect against feline leukemia.
-For dogs, bordetella and canine influenza (CIV) shots are a must if they frequent dog parks, boarding kennels, or any place where they’re socializing with other canines.

Your Seven Hills Pet Hospital doctor may also recommend leptospirosis and Lyme disease vaccinations depending on your dog’s lifestyle.

Q: Does my indoor cat really need vaccinations?

Yes! It’s important to note that even pets who live primarily indoors should be vaccinated, as they can still be exposed to disease if they accidentally escape or are exposed to other animals in or outside the home. We can advise you about which vaccinations are right for your pet.

Q: How often does my pet need to be vaccinated?

A: Annual vaccinations had been the rule for veterinarians, but they are now learning that some vaccines provide less than a year’s worth of immunity while others last well after a year has passed. That’s why most hospitals, including Seven Hills Pet Hospital, customize vaccination plans based on the needs of their patients.

Q: What kind of reaction should I watch for after my pet is vaccinated?

A: It’s pretty common for pets to experience some mild side effects after getting their shots. These include localized swelling, itching, sneezing, lethargy, and decreased appetite. You should make a call to the vet immediately, however, if your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms:

-Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
-Itchy skin that develops into hives
-Swelling of the muzzle and around the face, neck, or eyes
-Severe coughing or difficulty breathing
-Collapse

Q: What about titer testing? Can it prove immunity and eliminate the need for a vaccination?

A: Tests that measure antibody response, aka serologic titer tests, can help vets determine the need for revaccination in limited cases. Unfortunately, the tests don’t tell us if the specific concentration of an antibody is really protective or that a lower concentration means an animal is unprotected. Also, titer tests are not accepted as establishing immunity anywhere in the U.S. and cannot be used as proof of immunity.

Today is National Check the Chip Day!

One of the worst feelings to experience as a pet owner is realizing your pet has gone missing. Considering only 17% of lost dogs and 2% of lost cats make it back to their owners, it can often feel like you may never see your pet again.

Here's come information on why microchipping is so important:

-Unlike collars and tags, microchips cannot fall off and get lost. It’s with your pet for life.

-Microchipping a pet is inexpensive and super simple: a veterinary technician injects the tiny chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. Because the chip is encased in hypoallergenic, bio-friendly glass, allergic reactions to chips are incredibly rare.

-Most animal shelters and veterinary hospitals have chip scanners now, so microchips make it incredibly easy to get lost pets the help they need.

But remember: a microchip is only useful if your contact information is updated. Make sure anytime you move, you update your information with the microchip registry. There may be a fee associated with re-registering a chip, but it’s usually small and varies depending on the registration company.

Give your pets a better chance of finding their way home if they’re lost! Schedule an appointment online by visiting out website (https://sevenhillslv.pet/) by call us at 702-476-8812.

Daisy the pug is living her best life after having soft palate surgery with Dr. Gibbons!

Daisy's family says they "are so grateful for the successful outcome of the surgery and for the improvement in Daisy's quality of life. It's heartwarming to see her happy and playful again without being hindered by her breathing issues. We look forward to many more happy and healthy years with her by our side." ❤️😁

Soft palate surgery, called staphylectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes excess tissue from the dog's soft palate. This allows the pet to breath more easily and improves their quality of life!

Most smoosh-faced (brachycephalic or short-nosed) dogs are born with an elongated soft palate, which makes breathing more difficult for them. Symptoms of an elongated soft palate are: difficulty breathing, overheating easily, wearing out quickly with exercise, coughing, gagging, retching, noisy breathing (especially when inhaling), and can even lead to cyanosis (blue-ish colored tongue and gum tissue) and collapse.

If you have a pet dog who has any of these symptoms, call us today to schedule an appointment for a consultation with one of our veterinarians to discuss if soft-palate surgery may be beneficial for your pet! 702-476-8812

Check out these before and after pictures of a 10 year old shepherd with moderate dental tartar who has a professional dental cleaning at our hospital recently. Her teeth cleaned up beautifully!

Dental health is very important to your pet's overall health. Tartar buildup on the teeth leads to gingivitis, gum loss, bone loss, tooth root infections, and loose teeth. Bacteria from the dental disease in the mouth can spread to your pet's heart and other organs.

We recommend having your pet's teeth professionally cleaned under anesthesia at least once a year (sometime twice a year for those pets with severe dental disease). And every pet should have some sort of dental health routine at home. If you can't brush your pet's teeth, there's several other options, including oral rinse, water additive, and even special dental chews.

Our dental cleaning package starts at just $199!! Call us to schedule a FREE pre-dental exam for your pet.
