Hey, everyone, this is a rant. Sorry. MCG is not a 501c3. We do not obtain government grants nor free money from other entities. We are on contracts to be available 24/7, 365 for the city or county where we work and 7am-7pm for the citizens who have animal issues. We check every animal that comes to us for a chip or identification. We do not put animals down if no one stands up for that animal unless necessary for the animal’s health. We work with rescues to place the animals we care for, sometimes holding them for months until rescues can make space. We, as of lately, have been extremely lucky and have been able to give the animals we pick up back to their owners.
We do not post animals when we first get them, but we do place them on this page (or have others in the rescue world place them) 24 to 36 hours after pick-up. If an intake animal needs a vet, we get on the phone and speak to our vet even at 3am. If they will or want to see them, we get them to emergency care. This is seconded by the city or county where we pick up the animal. The city or county is responsible for the cost if the owners are not found. They do care about the animals in their area, and they do sometimes direct us to use our training and experience if an animal can be saved. However, the call is theirs to make. We do as directed.
Most understand that social media is not a great place to advertise the animals we pick up. We field a lot of calls and unnecessary messages (sometimes up to 200) to find the ones that help us find the animals’ owners. Yes, people use our page (along with City and County pages) to see if their animals were picked up, but we are also online with the city and county pages. That is the first place we look when we get an animal. Using social media is a great way to reunite animals with their owners. However, to field through angry rants is not ideal. Animal Control, like virtually all the rescues, is full. There are so many homeless animals breaking our hearts, budgets, and resources. Rescues frequently have vets that will give them breaks on visits and necessary costs, but most small animals control units do not. Yes, we pay the same as you. Many do arrive sick, carrying parasites or diseases. We work hard to treat them and to keep anything infectious contained.
I got into this for the LOVE of animals and did not have the resources or financial stability to go to veterinary school. But did graduate a Veterinary based school. I am not a vet, but I am a veterinary technician and I’ve kept up on my training. Along with many hours or Animal control training, the list is long but it is the path I chose.
We shoulder pain, trauma, desperation and depression at how people use animals. When they can’t afford or don’t train or to busy they throw away and get another. It is dealing with people who do not have the resources to properly care for there animals. That breed and give puppies away to kids and parents who agree. It is dealing with those who do not realize that rabies is real and ugly and can harm people along with animals. It is dealing with the owners that have just lost their loved pets. People that have no care about there pets, people that think life revolves around them. And people who really care about there animals.
I apologize for the rant, but this needs to be said. No offense meant toward anyone. I am human, and I am doing my best to save the lives of animals. Thank you for listening.
