In light of the leptospirosis cases we have seen recently -

In a rural, suburban, or urban setting, sometimes all it takes is a moment or two for your dog to pick up an infection like leptospirosis. Leptospirosis, commonly referred to as “lepto,” is a disease that can cause serious illness in dogs and other animals. It can spread to people, too.
Lepto bacteria live in standing water, soil, or other places contaminated by an infected animal’s urine (this is called urinary shedding). These can be rats, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and other wildlife or even an infected dog. Lepto can be found in cities as well as out in the country and can survive in moist environments for months. When your dog comes into contact with a contaminated area, lepto can get into their body through their mouth, nose, eyes, or cuts and wounds in their skin. The disease multiplies in the dog’s bloodstream and travels to their kidneys and other organs. In severe cases, lepto infections can be fatal.
You never know what your dog will get into, so it’s important that they’re protected from diseases like leptospirosis. Call or email us to set up a lepto vaccination appointment.

August isn't just National Dog Month, its also National Wellness Month! We recommend yearly wellness bloodwork to all of our patients, but especially our senior patients that are over 7 years old. Our furry family members age much faster than we do, and wellness bloodwork gives us a window into how they are doing internally. But what exactly are we looking for?

CBC (Complete Blood Count): This test shows your veterinarian the numbers of each of your pets blood cells - reds, whites, and platelets. Low red blood cells can indicate an anemia, high white blood cells can indicate inflammation/infection, and a low platelet count can suggest a clotting issue.

Blood Chemistry Profile: This test is ideal to get an overview of your pets internal chemistry, from organ health, electrolyte balance, endocrine health, blood sugar levels, and more.

Urinalysis: This test analyzes your pet's urine, not only looking for signs of infection, but also looking at how the kidney's are functioning, the pH of the urine, the presence of crystals/stones, and some endocrine functions.

Thyroid Test: The thyroid produces hormones that regulates many body functions. It plays a major role in metabolism, growth, development, and regulation by releasing a certain amount of thyroid hormone into the blood stream, depending on what is needed.

Accuplex Test: This test not only performs the required yearly heartworm test, but also tests for the tick-borne vectors Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis.

All of these parameters are not only looking for dysfunction, but also provide a good base-line for where your pet's normal values are. Your vet can compare trends through your pet's history and determine the best course of treatment! 🐈🐩🐾

We know we are not on the list in this article, but we have still been hit by some high temperatures the past few days. Leaving pets in cars can turn deadly, very quickly. Please reconsider taking your pets where they may have to stay in the car unattended, even for a short amount of time.

Pet owners have been warned that car temperatures could reach "lethal" levels within minutes amid an ongoing heat wave.

Hey LPAH family - July 4th celebrations are upon us in less than a month. For a lot of us, that means getting together with family and friends to celebrate. Please be mindful of those 4-legged family members that may not enjoy it as much as we do. If you need a prescription refilled to help with anxiety of loud noises, please call our office ASAP to make sure they're current on their yearly exam and get those prescriptions refilled. 828-697-5686
