Thank You Kitten Foster Volunteers
Our #fosterfriday feature is the incredible team of kitten foster volunteers currently supporting us during a very busy kitten season!
"We currently have 41 kittens in foster care. These wonderful people share their homes, their time, and their energy all for the love of kittens. The generosity and compassion that stems from every one of them is so infectious. BRHS provides the supplies and vet care. Some of my fosters will go buy supplies with their own money, and tell me to use the supplies for others in need. It has been so rewarding to work with this amazing group of people. Thank you so much for what you all do!" ~Emmy Smith, Foster Care Manager
And if you need a sweet video to start your Friday, this was Squirt learning how to use the toy wand while being supported by an amazing husband and wife foster team - the Rountrees!
What to Do if You Find Kittens
"What do I do if I find lost kittens?"
We get this question a lot this time of year.
Unless the kittens appear to be injured, your best bet is to leave them. Mother cats will care for their young, but often avoid human interaction. If they are injured, take them to emergency vet care if you can handle them. You can also call Animal Control for assistance at 828-697-4912. Our website offers resources for Spay/Neuter services, tips for kitten care, self re-homing services and more. You can also call or text our Pet Helpline anytime at 828-393-5832.
Thank you to our Thursday Kibble Crew for helping get ready for our Pet Food Giveaways!

Barbara finds volunteering to walk our dogs in the Adoption Center "brings her peace" 🐾🦮 and look at how happy Marty is on his morning walk! #NationalVolunteerWeek
Crayola is such a sweet boy who is getting overlooked and we aren't sure why! He loves to play with other dogs and toys - especially a chuck-it frisbee or flirt pole. His foster has shared that Crayola:
🐾Loves to sunbathe and run around the yard
🐾Slept beside her bed in his blanket fort
🐾Happily stayed crated if she needed to leave
🐾LOVES to make nests out of pillows and blankets
🐾Had great manners around no barking inside the house
Consider meeting with Crayola, one of our longest-stay dogs.
Our Animal Care Attendant Lois knows just how much Peppie loves her scratches! This perky pup is full of fun and would love a home soon! Come meet her and you'll fall for those adoring eyes too 😍
Thank you PetSmart for the grooming session for our princess Winnie! You made her look and feel better just in time for her Gotcha Day on Friday 😍
What better way to remind you about our August Kitten Flash Sale than with some of our playful kittens! Remember the adoption fee for kittens younger than 6 months old is reduced to $20 during the month of August!
The Lodge at Mills River - Health and Rehabilitation had a special visitor today! Sweet, lovable, Eevee (who is up for adoption) stopped by to personally thank the staff and residents for hosting a donation drive to benefit homeless pets, like herself. It’s hard to tell who was happier. Thank you for loving on Eevee and gathering some much needed supplies for animals in our community who need it most!
At Blue Ridge Humane Society, we fully support the cheese tax. Gemmy is a proud sponsor of this movement.
Gemmy would also like you to know that she has been waiting to find her home since JANUARY. What in the world has a dog gotta do to get adopted? She is around 1 year old, loves to go on adventures and meet new people. Gemmy knows sit and down, loves car rides and giving hugs. Cheese is obviously a popular motivator for this girl!
Let's get this girl adopted! And when in doubt, give your dog some cheese!
Mr. Tiger is quite the snuggle bug! Receiving the love of a cat has to be one of the best feelings in the world.
While Tilly is recovering from a broken hip in her foster home, her appetite is returning... but not enough for her to eat her veggies! Who actually enjoys green beans anyways!
I think we can all relate to Thiccaroni’s reaction to food coming! Poor Thiccaraoni has been passed up numerous times in favor of younger cats. Though he is considered a mature adult at 8 years old, this boy has a lot of love to give. He is more relaxed than kittens and already has an developed a felin-ality, so there is no guessing what you are getting into when you adopt this big boy! Cats are only $5 during our New Year, New Beginnings promo and as a part of of our Seniors for Seniors program Thiccaroni is free if you are over 65!
This sweet moment shows why foster homes are so vital! Pumpkin needed some time out of the shelter to rest and relax. No matter how comfortable we make the animals in our Adoption Center feel, pets belong in homes, on laps, getting treats & snuggles. During their stay with a foster, cats and dogs are able to distress, unwind, and show us the full scope their animal-ality! We are happy to report that Pumpkin was adopted this weekend thanks to the hard work and compassionate hearts of our staff and her foster family.
As 2023 kicks off, it is time for new beginnings. With so many vital lessons we learn from the animals in our care daily, we thought they’d be the best teachers as we make resolutions for the new year. Our next resolution for 2023, make more time for play! Huck here knows all about play! So get outside, breathe the fresh air, and let the play take you where you want to go! Huck is available and looking for a new playmate in the new year!
New Year’s Eve is right around the corner which means it’s resolution time! This got us to thinking that there are so many vital lessons we can learn everyday from our pets. What better way to kick off the new year then to take the lead from our furry friends. First up, live in the moment and don’t worry about how others see you! Be yourself and do what brings you joy. If you want to roll around on the grass, just do it!
Their stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there… well this Nicholas got just what he wanted this Christmas! Although we were closed to the public, staff were merrily placing toys under the Christmas tree. Each dog in our care was then able to pick their very own present! A big thank you to our holiday staff for ensuring that even homeless pets receive the best present of all this holiday season… love.
The 8th Donation Ask of Christmas is for cat enrichment items!
Ever heard of silvervine sticks? They are comparable to catnip and create a sense of euphoria when a cat chews on them, much like this happy guy! We have a variety of items we offer the cats in our care to help their days be a bit brighter. They can get small synthetic aquariums, interactive chase toys, and more! Watching our cats interact with enrichment items brings us almost as much joy as it does them!
