Hurricane Helene cleanup continues and this is phase #3. This post is dedicated to my two favorite volunteers! Thank you Matthew Vann for always being available for big farm projects. Phase 3 of Helene cleanup was dedicated to removing all the wire fencing that was destroyed by the flooding. This job was a little dangerous as 3 out of 4 of us got scratched up pretty good 🩸 (my bloody arm as an example). We had to work together to pull out the wire from being buried into the ground from the flood. Horse boarder Bob also joined in the fun for an hour of labor too. As we wait for all the schools to open back up, parents have no where to take their kids. Many parks were flooded, stores are closed, and many places are still blocked due to fallen trees, broken bridges and power lines down. Thankfully, one of the main roads to get to our farm recently opened! Our barn was not damaged and 80% of our farm is safe besides our creek area (which turned into a lake).
We feel extremely fortunate in the midst of such extreme devastation throughout WNC.
We understand that there is a long road ahead for our community to recover from so much trauma and we plan on doing our small part to help. Today we had a free Family Farm Healing Day where parents could drop in with their kids and relax a little with animals and nature. The kids played with games, coloring books, and animals, and moms got free chair massages by @massagebylisa_hvlnc, cuddled animals and dove into some adult coloring books! It was a beautiful day of community and reconnection.❤️🩹

It has been an indescribable week for everyone here in WNC. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes, cars, all their belongings, animals and even family members. We are sending prayers up for everyone at this time. 💔🙏🏼 We feel very blessed to have our farm on a slight hill away from our flood zone. We are fortunate to say that all our animals were safe! Our barn, buildings and home are just fine too. The only thing Hurricane Helene destroyed was our fence to our pasture by the creek. We feel very fortunate this is all we have to cleanup and repair. We absolutely loved having two Girls Scout Troops out to Hendo Care Farm! These Girl Scouts wanted to learn how to take care of animals, so we customized a tour for them so they could learn all about how to care for horses, pigs, goats and chickens. They also helped out with some farm chores during their visit for more hands-on and teamwork experience. After all their hard work, they got to spend some time at the creek to relax, have snacks, and get their feet wet.
