History

In the 1940s, a young man named William Wilson Sr. established Wilson Drugs on 7th Avenue. He sold the drug store to fellow friend Jack Lovingood when he retired in 1948. Wilson (Pharmacist) re-opened Economy Drugs in 1948, with a new location on 4th and Main Street as a local pharmacy and soda shop. Until 1966, brothers Bill Wilson and Bob Wilson R. Ph. maintained that location and then moved the drug store to the countryside of 605 5th Avenue West, where it currently resides today. They wanted to move it closer to the hospital to reach more of their customers. They also established a new idea of a Drive-Thru window for sick patients. It is one of the oldest drive-thru windows in the state of NC and is still in operation today. In 1982, the Wilson brothers sold Economy Drugs to Mr. Robert Whatley, who then owned and operated it from 1982-1995 as Economart Pharmacy. He established three locations Hendersonville, Etowah, and Brevard, NC locations. As a young pharmacy student and Pharmacist, Jack Romer worked for Economart until October 1995, when he had the opportunity to purchase the store. At that time, he approached local leaders Flip Fisher and Larry Baber of Whitley Drugs of the idea of possibly buying Economart from Robert Whatley and becoming partners, and so they did. They purchased Economart Pharmacy and returned the name to Economy Drugs to honor the store's history with the Wilson family. When the store's sale was accomplished, and Jack, Flip, and Larry became partners in both stores. Larry Baber retired in 2001. Currently, the corporation that consists of Whitley Drugs and Economy Drugs is owned by Pharmacists Flip Fisher R.Ph. and Jack Romer R.Ph.

Greens & Cognitive Decline

Eating leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, collards and lettuce, may slow the rate of cognitive decline in seniors, according to a new study. The study followed 960 older adults, average age 81, for 5 years. Researchers focused on the amount of these vegetables needed to be protective against cognitive decline. When they compared the highest daily consumption (1.3 servings per day) to the lowest (.09 servings per day), researchers found that the rate of cognitive decline for those who ate the most was equivalent to someone 11 years younger, compared to those who ate the least. Adding one serving of leafy greens per day may stave off cognitive decline.

February Is Heart Month

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. As do men, women may experience pain, tightness or discomfort in the chest during a heart attack. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, pain in one or both arms, cold sweats, feeling lightheaded, back or jaw pain, and unexplained fatigue or weakness. For some women, symptoms may be present a month or so before their actual heart attack. If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately!

Tart Cherry Juice & Sleep

According to a new study, tart cherry juice may help improve sleep. Researchers gave participants of a small study 1 oz. of tart cherry juice concentrate before their evening meal for 7 days. The cherry juice increased their melatonin levels compared to their levels before the study and those in the placebo group. The tart cherry group experienced increased sleep duration and better sleep quality. Another small study found one cup of tart cherry juice (not concentrate) in the morning and another 2 hours before bed for 2 weeks increased sleep time by 84 minutes for those with chronic insomnia. Experts suggest unsweetened tart cherry juice to avoid extra calories.

Benefits Of Walking

Walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week yields a number of health benefits. It reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Walking may also help manage blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. By helping maintain a healthy weight, it may also lower the risk of health issues related to obesity. It may help lower blood pressure and also strengthen bones against osteoporosis. Walking may also improve mood and boost your sense of well-being. It can also lower one's risk of some cancers, such as breast and colon cancer. If you can't walk 30 minutes a day all at once, break it up into three 10-minute sessions.

SAD

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs in climates where there is less sunlight and days are shorter certain times of the year. Symptoms may include fatigue, depression, social isolation, anxiety, mood swings, sleep problems, weight gain and general sadness. Some treatments that have been effective in reducing symptoms include lightbox therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Getting regular exercise has also been shown to reduce symptoms of SAD. Some studies have shown vitamin D supplements to be helpful. Those with more severe symptoms may want to talk with their doctor regarding other medications.

Measuring Blood Pressure

Here are some tips for getting a more accurate blood pressure (BP) reading. First, be sure to use the correct size cuff; some people require a larger or smaller size than the standard upper-arm cuff. Place the cuff on a bare arm and make sure the arm is resting at heart level on a table or desk and not hanging down at your side or on your lap. Incorrect cuff size or arm position can alter a reading by 4 to 20 points or 4 to 6 points, respectively. Sit up and keep legs uncrossed with feet flat on the floor. Avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking before taking BP. Use the restroom prior to taking BP. Also, try to relax for about 5 minutes beforehand and don't talk while measuring BP.

Healthy Lifestyle = Healthy Brain

A new study adds to current research regarding how a healthy lifestyle may help protect your brain. Researchers studied about 500 people, average age 91, who had been tracked for about 24 years. They found that better cognitive scores were linked to having a higher "healthy lifestyle" score. Lifestyle scores were based on amount of exercise, limited alcohol intake, cognitive activities (reading, puzzles, playing cards, etc.), not smoking and eating a healthy Mediterranean/DASH-like diet. The link held true even when autopsies revealed the presence of beta-amyloid, tau-tangles and other Alzheimer's-related pathologies.

Coffee May Lower Heart Risk

Consuming caffeinated coffee in moderation may lower the risk of developing more than one cardiometabolic disease, such as stroke, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, according to a new study. Researchers looked at dietary data on about 360,000 people and found that those who drank about 3 cups of coffee per day had a 48% lower risk for new-onset cardiometabolic multi-morbidity. Experts say that there are many beneficial compounds in coffee besides the caffeine. The flavonoids and polyphenols in coffee have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may contribute to the positive association.

Biking May Lower Disease Risk

If possible, folks might want to consider biking to work to lower their risk of heart disease, cancer and death from all causes. In a new study, including 83,000 people, researchers compared active commuting versus passive commuting. They found that cycling benefited physical and mental well-being compared to passive commuting. After 20 years of monitoring, biking was linked with a 47% reduced risk of death, a 24% reduced risk of hospital admission for heart disease, and a 10% lower risk of hospital admission for any reason. Bikers were also 51% less likely to die of cancer. They also had lower risk of needing meds for heart disease or mental illness.

Pickleball & Eye Protection

Pickleball combines features of tennis, badminton and ping pong, and the ball can travel up to 40 miles an hour at times. While protective eyewear is not required to play, experts say it can reduce the risk of eye injury. Doctors have reported several kinds of eye injuries, including black eye, corneal abrasion, Berlin's edema, and more serious, vision-threatening retinal tears. Experts say polycarbonate safety goggles, which have front and side coverage, would offer ideal protection. Players who get hit in the eye should see an ophthalmologist right away if they experience change or loss of vision, substantial pain, bleeding or bruising.

Safe Handling Of Turkey

The cooking process kills any surface bacteria, so experts say it's not necessary to wash the bird before cooking. This also prevents bacteria from being splashed around your kitchen. Thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator in a shallow baking pan to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Allow 24 hours of thawing time for every 5 lbs. of turkey. When preparing the turkey, wash your hands and kitchen surfaces frequently to avoid spreading bacteria. Cook the turkey until it reaches a temperature of 165 degrees in the breast and 180 degrees in the thickest part of the thigh. It’s safest to cook stuffing separately.

Pet Ownership & Cognitive Health

Having a pet may help stave off dementia in older adults, especially those living alone. A new study of about 8,000 seniors found that having a pet was associated with a slower rate of decline, specifically in verbal cognition, verbal memory and verbal fluency, in those who lived alone. Another study revealed that dog owners had a lower risk of dementia compared to non-dog owners. The study analyzed data from about 11,000 older adults. Researchers suggest that the brain benefit may be in part because dog owners are more likely to get regular exercise walking their dogs. Having a dog may also increase social connectedness and reduce loneliness, factors that also affect brain health.

Tai Chi & Blood Pressure

Tai chi is a low-impact form of exercise with deliberate, flowing motions and a focus on slow, deep breathing. New research suggests that it may help lower elevated blood pressure (BP) better than aerobic exercise. The study involved 342 adults with elevated BP who did either tai chi or a form of aerobic exercise for 60 minutes 4 times a week. After a year, those in the tai chi group reduced their systolic BP (top number) by an average of 7 points, and the aerobic group lowered theirs by an average of 4 points. Experts say continue aerobic exercise because of its many health benefits, but consider adding tai chi.

Optimists May Live Longer

Having a positive outlook on life may actually extend your lifespan, according to a recent study. The study found that older adults who generally expected good things to happen lived longer than those who expected negative outcomes. After adjusting for other factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, age, gender, physical activity and social status, researchers found that the optimists had a 29% lower risk of early death compared to the pessimists. Their sunny disposition was especially protective against cardiovascular events; they had a 77% reduced risk of death from heart attack or stroke when compared to their highly pessimistic peers.
