History

In the 1940s, a young man named William Wilson Sr. established Wilson Drugs on 7th Avenue. He sold the drug store to fellow friend Jack Lovingood when he retired in 1948. Wilson (Pharmacist) re-opened Economy Drugs in 1948, with a new location on 4th and Main Street as a local pharmacy and soda shop. Until 1966, brothers Bill Wilson and Bob Wilson R. Ph. maintained that location and then moved the drug store to the countryside of 605 5th Avenue West, where it currently resides today. They wanted to move it closer to the hospital to reach more of their customers. They also established a new idea of a Drive-Thru window for sick patients. It is one of the oldest drive-thru windows in the state of NC and is still in operation today. In 1982, the Wilson brothers sold Economy Drugs to Mr. Robert Whatley, who then owned and operated it from 1982-1995 as Economart Pharmacy. He established three locations Hendersonville, Etowah, and Brevard, NC locations. As a young pharmacy student and Pharmacist, Jack Romer worked for Economart until October 1995, when he had the opportunity to purchase the store. At that time, he approached local leaders Flip Fisher and Larry Baber of Whitley Drugs of the idea of possibly buying Economart from Robert Whatley and becoming partners, and so they did. They purchased Economart Pharmacy and returned the name to Economy Drugs to honor the store's history with the Wilson family. When the store's sale was accomplished, and Jack, Flip, and Larry became partners in both stores. Larry Baber retired in 2001. Currently, the corporation that consists of Whitley Drugs and Economy Drugs is owned by Pharmacists Flip Fisher R.Ph. and Jack Romer R.Ph.

Safe Handling Of Turkey

The cooking process kills any surface bacteria, so experts say it's not necessary to wash the bird before cooking. This also prevents bacteria from being splashed around your kitchen. Thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator in a shallow baking pan to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Allow 24 hours of thawing time for every 5 lbs. of turkey. When preparing the turkey, wash your hands and kitchen surfaces frequently to avoid spreading bacteria. Cook the turkey until it reaches a temperature of 165 degrees in the breast and 180 degrees in the thickest part of the thigh. It’s safest to cook stuffing separately.

Pet Ownership & Cognitive Health

Having a pet may help stave off dementia in older adults, especially those living alone. A new study of about 8,000 seniors found that having a pet was associated with a slower rate of decline, specifically in verbal cognition, verbal memory and verbal fluency, in those who lived alone. Another study revealed that dog owners had a lower risk of dementia compared to non-dog owners. The study analyzed data from about 11,000 older adults. Researchers suggest that the brain benefit may be in part because dog owners are more likely to get regular exercise walking their dogs. Having a dog may also increase social connectedness and reduce loneliness, factors that also affect brain health.

Tai Chi & Blood Pressure

Tai chi is a low-impact form of exercise with deliberate, flowing motions and a focus on slow, deep breathing. New research suggests that it may help lower elevated blood pressure (BP) better than aerobic exercise. The study involved 342 adults with elevated BP who did either tai chi or a form of aerobic exercise for 60 minutes 4 times a week. After a year, those in the tai chi group reduced their systolic BP (top number) by an average of 7 points, and the aerobic group lowered theirs by an average of 4 points. Experts say continue aerobic exercise because of its many health benefits, but consider adding tai chi.

Optimists May Live Longer

Having a positive outlook on life may actually extend your lifespan, according to a recent study. The study found that older adults who generally expected good things to happen lived longer than those who expected negative outcomes. After adjusting for other factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, age, gender, physical activity and social status, researchers found that the optimists had a 29% lower risk of early death compared to the pessimists. Their sunny disposition was especially protective against cardiovascular events; they had a 77% reduced risk of death from heart attack or stroke when compared to their highly pessimistic peers.

Health Benefits Of Strawberries

Strawberries are a delicious low-calorie, nutrient-rich snack containing vitamin C, folate, manganese, potassium and small amounts of several other vitamins and minerals. One study suggested that people who ate strawberries were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Various other studies suggest they have a number of other health benefits, too. Among these are protecting the brain from cognitive decline, strengthening your immune system, protecting your heart, reducing inflammation and helping manage blood sugar levels. Their antioxidant properties may even help protect against cancer.

More Reasons To Take The Stairs

According to a new study, climbing up and down stairs after a meal improves your insulin's ability to move blood sugar into your cells. Researchers had participants walk up and down stairs at their own pace for either 1, 3 or 10 minutes, right after finishing a meal. Insulin sensitivity improved after 3 or 10 minutes of stair climbing, compared to staying seated after eating. Climbing stairs is a more intense activity than just walking. It is good for your heart, too. Research shows 7 minutes of stair climbing a day can cut risk of heart attack in half over 10 years. Stair climbing also improves muscle strength, joint flexibility and bone density.

Some of the benefits may include increased longevity, quicker recovery time after a cardiovascular event, strengthened immune system, improved mental health, reduced anxiety, and protection against cognitive decline. To get more connected, get involved in activities you enjoy, develop a new hobby, take a class or volunteer. Where You Store Fat May Matter

People who store fat around their belly and in their arms may have an increased risk for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In a recent study, researchers tracked more than 400,000 adults, average age 56, and found that folks with high levels of belly fat and arm fat had a 13% and 18% higher risk of these diseases, respectively. Researchers did, however, find that good muscle strength was linked to a 26% lower risk of these diseases. Experts say to lose excess weight, especially in the belly and arms, and not to neglect strength training as part of your exercise routine.

Stay Healthy Cruising

Cruising can be fun; however, in this crowded environment, illness and infection can spread rapidly. Before scheduling your cruise, you may want to search the CDC’s website for instructions on what OTC medications to take along, destinations to be avoided or cruise outbreaks. Also check their website for any vaccinations you may need for your destination. While on board, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer often, especially before eating. When eating from a buffet, choose foods that are hot and steaming. Lukewarm food sitting for many hours can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Try to get adequate sleep to strengthen your immune system and stay well hydrated.

Exercise & ED

Aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging and cycling may improve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED), according to a new study. Researchers analyzed 11 randomized trials involving about 1,000 men with ED. They discovered that those who exercised 30 to 60 minutes 3 to 5 times a week saw improvement in their ED symptoms when compared to those who didn't exercise. The review also revealed that the worse a man's ED was, the more the exercise helped. The researchers said that the aerobic exercise groups in the studies saw reductions in symptoms that were on par with use of ED medications.

Gratitude & Loneliness

In a recent study, researchers found that people who feel more gratitude tend to experience less loneliness. They found that if someone scored above average in gratitude, there was a 62% chance they'd also score low in loneliness. Loneliness is a distressing emotion that can contribute to various negative health outcomes such as depression, cardiovascular disease and even cognitive decline. Keeping a gratitude journal, seeing challenges as opportunities, reframing negative thoughts, regularly expressing thanks (especially to those close to you) and practicing mindfulness may help promote gratitude.

Potassium & Kidney Disease

Eating a diet that includes potassium-rich foods may help lower the risk of chronic kidney disease, according to recent research. In an observational study, scientists tracked about 106,000 adults, ages 40 to 69, for 12 years. Those who reported eating the most potassium had a 14% reduced risk of chronic kidney disease. The study proves only an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship. However, previous research suggests a DASH-like diet, which is high in potassium, helps lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is a factor that raises kidney disease risk. Some foods high in potassium are avocados, watermelon, spinach, beans, potatoes, bananas and crushed tomatoes.
