Renee’s Fosters: Saving Lives One Dog At A Time

Know the breed before you get an Australian Shepherd!!!

If you have ever wondered why it is or was hard to train your Aussie not to nip and why many Aussies don’t have tails these pictures tell the story. They are bred to herd anything from ducks and sheep to large angry cows and bison. They do it with stealth and well timed nips. Not all large livestock are friendly participants.... some are like the customer or client from hell. Some Aussies are born with naturally bobbed tails which comes in handy when trying to prevent painful or catastrophic tail injuries like degloving, paralysis and death. Through early attempts to breed in the naturally bobbed tails the results where also breeding in serious spinal defects making docking the only safe way to prevent tail injures. This isn’t a debate on right or wrong it’s just information on how it became breed standard.

Fun Fact: There is nothing Australian about the Australian Shepherd.... they were made and breed in America 😉

Support Responsible Breeders

Responsible pet owners do their research and make sure they're ready for the type of breed they've chosen.

Responsible breeders are happy to give pet buyers all of the important information they need to make an informed, responsible decision.

Remember, breeders don't put dogs in shelters, irresponsible owners do.

An argument for ethical dog breeders

An argument for ethical dog breeders

“I rescued him.” How many times has a dog owner said these words to you? These days people feel very confident that the only way they should obtain a dog is to rescue one. A person who is concerned…

Mountain Woods Farm

It’s that time of year again when I see many people share memes about dogs being left out in the cold.

Most of these posts allude to the fact that dogs should be brought in when it’s cold, because “if you are cold, they are cold”.

Just yesterday I had a comment left on my bear post about my dogs being “left in the cold”.

As you all know, I am so very happy to debunk any myths and educate the public when I can 🙂

Thankfully, this year I have seen a few posts circulating which are far more accurate, depicting nordic breeds, heavy-coated breeds (like my beloved Newfs!), and LGD breeds happily laying in their element, refusing to come inside for their owners.

With the above being said, I want to take a moment to provide an important and great visual on LGD coats and how these working dogs have been purposefully bred for centuries and centuries to withstand even the harshest of elements.

And real talk: they absolutely LOVE the cold temperatures, it’s when they truly come alive!

Those of you that follow my page know our LGDs do have 24/7 access to two warm and dry barns, but chose to be outside where they are happiest.

All the LGD owners I know do have adequate shelter for their dogs. These dogs are invaluable to our operations and most of us would tell you they are best part of our Farm and Ranches!

Pictured below, on top, is our Maremma Sheepdogs’ coat. On the left you see her topcoat frozen solid. When I took these pictures it was just 12°. To the right you see me parting her coat to expose dry roots and dry, warm skin.

The two bottom pictures belong to our Great Pyrenees. The left depicts his frozen topcoat. The right is me parting his coat to show dry roots and warm, dry skin. Totally protected and insulated from the below freezing temperatures.

Their coats do an exceptional job of trapping heat.

So, if you come across an LGD with a frozen coat, that simply means their coat is doing its job!

Under the same exact conditions, many household dogs would end up with wet or damp coats. This would be detrimental to an LGD!

Ah, the importance of purposefully bred dogs!

The Dog Leadership Manifesto

Most of us would love the easiest path to exactly what we want.

The solution that comes with all of the guarantees, minimizes our accountability, and promises us perfect results.

But nothing is ever like that, is it?

So we want to believe that there is something special that separates us from the people who are successful… some reason why we can’t do it, but they can.

“You make it look so easy” they tell me… “Of course he listens to you.”

That’s exactly why I wrote this leadership manifesto.

This list of commandments, so to speak, is void of method or approach. It’s a reminder to myself and to my people that it’s not just about the techniques… it’s not how many times a day you practice, or the application of everything... it’s a way of thinking. A lifestyle.

It’s promising to master a mindset.

Because once you master a mindset, all of the other pieces fall into place. The techniques will come with practice. But the real change happens first with your mind.

Rule 4: Always respect the dog's personal space, don't lean over them, into them or crowd them. 🙌
Rule 5: If in doubt just admire their beauty from afar. 😍

Many dogs are uncomfortable interacting with strangers. That's okay! Many people are uncomfortable interacting with strangers. You may not realize but your body langaue can be very intimidating for many dogs.

Dogs Are Smart: Training for Dogs & People

This is correct for US federal law. Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks to help with disabilities. They are allowed public access by law. Emotional support dogs are pet dogs that are allowed in housing & on airlines but ARE NOT entitled to public access. Therapy dogs are dogs that are trained to provide support to people other than their handler and they are NOT allowed public access to any areas other than where/when they are specifically working to provide therapy. ***If the service dog's task is not obvious*** (like a guide dog) then the two questions can be asked by law. NO questions can be asked about the human's disability. The questions are about the service dog. The questions can be asked by a designated employee of the business (not by customers and not by every employee.)

Prepare yourself: If you don't read the links above and you misstate the law, you will be informed of the actual laws. That's just how we roll. If you think we're wrong, post your source to educate us. Don't just all caps yell at us. 🤣Even I learned new things in this post!
****NEW RULE: There's a pet tax on this post now. If you comment and you have a PET (I don't care what kind) I WANNA SEE IT.*****😍

This is why I don’t do dog parks or recommend them. Plus your don’t know the worming and vaccine regimen of the dogs in there.

I talk about socializing without intensity and how a daycare should be. Scout decided he wanted to run around but since our vibe out here doesn’t include intensity a few of the dogs tried to interrupt his behavior because they didn’t agree with it.

What you see below is socializing WITH intensity and why prolonged behaviors like this can cause MAJOR problems in daycares, dog parks, and walking paths.

I recorded this for educational purposes and no dogs were harmed. Watch how the dogs surround him to try to calm him down.

****Please note, this is a controlled environment with dogs we know VERY well. Please do not attempt this on your own****

Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS)

Heads up dog lovers! A dog-friendly warning regarding the Xmas treats many stores are now starting to stock for dogs for the holidays.

Many of these so-called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China, where there are vastly reduced safety standards to those we rely on in the U.S.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulfide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. You may know hydrogen peroxide is commonly used to make dogs vomit up poisons but it can cause lasting damage to intestines.

Now come the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium, and formaldehyde! Yeesh - you would never knowingly feed these toxins to yourself or your dogs, right?

If that wasn't bad enough, these "treats" regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews are slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well-meaning person buys them for your dog store them safely away from your dog and then dispatch in the garbage bin!

Dog Walking, Sitting, Training, and Grooming

Training is balanced and customized to fit you and your dogs needs. Half hour meet and eval is $20 (free for those booking for the first time on Rover with code) to determine what your training level and needs are, so that your curriculum can be custom planned. Personal one-on-one classes, near your home, at your home, or even via Skype consultation for those not in RVA.

Walks start at $12 for a half hour. Good leash manners are always reinforced to prevent undoing your training. You can request more time if you have an extra energetic pup, a brush-out or nail trim to be included, my pup to come along as a walking buddy, a training session to reinforce what you’re working on at home or in class, or to have your pup taken on an excursion to a fun spot like the river or hardware store.
