Preliminary results of a research project studying the movements and forces of shod and unshod horses find that “traditional iron shoes change the hoof’s ability to expand and contract across tracts, as well as the tracts’ ability to move up and down in relation to each other.”

In this episode, Dr. Erica Lacher and show host Justin Long explore the old axiom, "no hoof, no horse," and the myriad of ways that manifests itself. Mini Scoots for a mini model🦄

Leandro is just one of the cutest and most fluffy Scoot models we have ever seen.

He and his humans live in the arctic part of Norway so the extra fluffiness surely has a purpose. Leandro loves to go for drives and is a boss in front of his little wagon where he takes his loved ones for adventures.

We are so lucky to be able to share some of those moments and enjoy the beautiful nature and scenery they take us to.

Thank you Amanda .theshetty for always putting a smile on our faces 🥰

Here is a great quote from J.G. Holstrom from 1904 'Advice to Horse Owners', "It is cruelty to animals to raise a c**t and not train him for shoeing, and the horse-shoer must suffer for this neglect also. Many a valuable horse has been crippled or maltreated, and thousands of horse-shoers suffer hardships, and many are crippled, and a few killed every year for the horse owner's carelessness in this matter. A law should be enacted making the owner of an ill-bred horse responsible for the damage done to the horse-shoer by such an animal. Every horse-raiser should begin while the c**t is only a few days old to drill him for the shoeing. The feet should be taken, one after the other, and held in the same position as a horse-shoer does, a light hammer or even the fist will do, to tap on the foot with, and the feet should be handled and manipulated in the same manner the horse-shoer does when shoeing. This practice should be kept up and repeated at least once a week and the c**t when brought to the shop for shoeing will suffer no inconvenience. The horseshoer's temper, as well as muscles, will be spared and a good feeling all around prevails."

DO YOU OFFER A MULTIPLE HORSE DISCOUNT?🤔

I use to. I thought I was being nice and I was saving money by doing multiple horses at one stop and passing on the savings to the customer. Or I did it because I felt bad writing out a huge bill for one person.

But as I got older, I realized I was cheating myself. More seasoned farriers had told me for years that every horseshoer only has so many horses in their backs, so make each one count. I was doing the same amount work on each horse, but making less money and my back was just as tired as if I have done the same amount of horses at multiple stops.

Fortunately, I accepted the advice of my mentors and have taken steps to try to prolong my career. Giving discounts will hurt your back, your business and your bottom line.

Horse and Hound Mobile Veterinary Services

The importance of radiography!!! A client who just took ownership of this horse wanted us to take radiographs to assess why his hoof was malformed. He had some abscesses that had popped out at the coronet band. The radiographs took us all by surprise!! Nobody knows how long this guy had a nail in that foot. Plus he was barely lame!!! 😯😯

After a nerve block was performed, the nail was removed. We soaked his foot with betadine and water to help clean out the bacteria. He now has some antibiotic paste in the nail hole and his foot is wrapped. He also got a tetanus booster and started on systemic antibiotics.

This is one lucky horse! This could have turned out much worse for him. We are definitely not out of the woods yet, but it looks like he should make a full recovery.

Horse and Hound always has a mobile radiograph unit on the truck! We are always ready and excited to take some pictures to better diagnose issues with your horse. Or dog. Or cat. Or goat. Whatever you have, we can take it! 📸📸🐎🐕🐈🦄🦓🐖🐄🐐🐫🦆📸📸

“Good farriers work with other good farriers. They read, they study, they practice, they simply don’t isolate themselves through complacency. In fact, good farriers in North America spend several thousand dollars each year to advance their knowledge and skill. If your farrier isn’t on the road, attending clinics, conventions, and other events, you should wonder why. A friend once said that “the worst disease a farrier can suffer from is isolation.””

Hay Where's That Blue Stuff

The weather has now warmed up enough to get the mud off the legs and what do you find?
Cannon Crud, YUCK, no one likes this unsightly fungus festering on their horses legs! If it goes untreated this can turn in to swelling and lameness in some horses.

Treat this easily by washing with Fungus Amungus Shampoo and applying That Blue Stuff Lotion daily. Do not scrub or pick at it, allow the product to work from the inside out. When healed, the scabs will fall off and new healthy skin and hair will be underneath!

Rio's owner used Hay Where's That Products and successfully healed that pesky Cannon Crud!
