Why is crate training so important??

Crate training needs to start the day you get your puppy. It prevents so many bad habits such as the ones shown in the pictures (getting into the trash, tearing up stuff, ingesting foreign objects which could cause death or a major surgery, etc), and prevent anxiety issues as your puppy gets older. Giving your dog a safe place to rest and calm down is very important.

The first day of crate training especially if you get a new puppy will not be easy. They most likely just left their other siblings and have never been alone. This is where you need to have tough love and not give up on crate training. Also making it super fun to go in the crate by using food/treats. Feeding time needs to happen in the crate. They start realizing this is where they eat which is a motivator for puppies. Crate training is also a great start to help with potty training. If we give our puppies, free roam of the house all the time it’s going to give them more areas to p*e or p**p in your home when unsupervised.

A lot of people are getting new puppies this time of year. We just wanted to share some crate training and potty training tips.

Potty training and Crate training:

1. DO NOT start your puppy on potty pads or grass pads in the house. This will only cause your dog to continue to go on your rugs or carpets in your house as they get older. They will also keep going to the same spot the pads were even if they are not there.

2. I recommend getting you a set of dog bells for your door. You need to ring these bells every time you take your pup out but also adding the verbal command of “let’s go potty.” They will start associating the sound of the bells and verbal command with going outside. Make sure the door that you take your puppy out of is consistent. It’s hard enough for them to remember which door to go to as it is.

3. Always take your dog to the same spot outside. Also note...this is not play time. If you don’t want to stand outside for two hours...then avoid the puppy play until the puppy goes to the bathroom. If they do not go potty the first time…go back inside wait two minutes then go right back outside and try again.

4. NO FREE FEEDING and limit the amounts of water at a time. Take your puppy outside quickly after it eats or drinks. Another reason we say no free feeding is to prevent food aggression. NOTE: we only feed in the crate.

5. NO FREE Roaming! Your puppy doesn’t need access to the whole house just yet. If you want to prevent a lot of bad habits such as chewing, getting into things, and p*eing when your not looking then set up some baby gates or boundaries. Remember when your puppy is unsupervised make sure it is in its crate. This is not only for potty training reasons but also for their safety. This training trick will help prevent a lot of bad habits as they get older.
