Congratulations Daisy!!! We were all SO HAPPY to see sweet little Daisy go home with her family after being treated for Parvo in our critical care unit for the last few days.

Daisy is the 3rd puppy we have treated for the deadly Parvovirus in the last 30 days, so please be aware that this deadly killer of puppies is on the rise in our local Hernando community.

The canine parvovirus is highly contagious and can spread easily through direct contact with another contaminated dog or its f***s. It can also spread easily through indirect contact which can include contact with a human who has recently handled an infected puppy, a contaminated object like a water or food bowl, collars, leashes, toys, etc.

Parvo can affect all dogs, but puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk. Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, fever or low body temperature (hypothermia), vomiting, and severe (often bloody) diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

Contact your veterinarian if your canine family member shows these symptoms. Early supportive care ensures the best outcome for a complete recovery. With early intervention, survival rates can be close to 90%.

SHOW US YOUR MIXED BREED! :)

In honor of National Mixed Breed Day, say hello to Sally, who is a unique mix of "chihuahua, dachshund, samoyed, and American pit bull terrier" according to her DNA test.

"National Mixed Breed Day" was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, who started this day to raise awareness about the problem of mixed breed dogs who are often abandoned.

Sally was adopted by our Practice Manager 3 years ago from the City of Hernando Animal Shelter and is (you guessed it) spoiled rotten!

We always ❤️ seeing little 15-year old Bitzi and her sweet family. Bitzi is extremely social and loves to visit, so she doesn’t mind having her blood drawn for medication monitoring.

Getting regular bloodwork done annually (or sooner, depending on certain health conditions or medications being taken) gives our veterinarians the most information about your pet’s health so that the best treatment and prevention recommendations can be made to keep senior pets like Bitzi happy and healthy. ❤️❤️❤️

We loved seeing Declan, the beautiful Irish Wolfhound, today. The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dog breeds and can measure up to 7 feet tall if they stand on their hind legs. The name "Declan" is an old Irish name dating back to the 6th century and means "full of goodness", which suits this boy's personality perfectly! 💓💓💓

Dr. Ryan and our veterinary technicians, Jerrilyn and Cari, loved helping Amora with her injured toe last week. Amora, (which means "love" in Spanish) is an Argentine TEGU, a beautiful, incredibly intelligent, and curious breed of lizard known to have "dog-like" qualities in that they are very loyal and seek companionship. We were absolutely fascinated with her beauty and acceptance of handling. It was easy to see that Amora is the apple of her Dad's eye who takes excellent care of her. Tegu lizards can grow up to 5 feet long and do best with experienced owners.

Our kennel & veterinary staff have the kindest hearts! Thank you Suzanne Lawrence for rescuing this 8-lb puppy this morning when she was literally discarded and thrown out of a moving car. Luckily the puppy was not injured and the offenders were apprehended and charged.

We will be providing veterinary care for this little girl and Suzanne will spoil her rotten until she finds her the perfect family. ❤️❤️❤️

It was great to see one of our favorite families with their new fur baby today! Ardie & Howard Barr have always loved and had boxers, but decided to downsize to a smaller fur baby this time. She’s all set with her first puppy exam, deworming, and vaccinations.

The next order of business is to decide on a name. The top contenders are Gidget or Peanut. What name do you think suits this precious little girl?

** We are happy to share the announcement directly from Kingdom Peacock: “After a busy night of multiple, urgent trips to the facilities, Her Royal Highness Kayla, Princess of Kingdom Peacock, felt the need this morning for an impromptu visit to Lady Jordan (the best Royal vet tech in not only the Kingdom but also the state of Mississippi) and Jordan's equally capable side kick, Dr. Tim. The Queen escorted Her Highness in the Royal Carriage and patiently awaited results of the blue-blood work.

Lady Jordan reported to the Queen that Her Highness stoically withstood the blood draw, demonstrating her usual regal poise. However, when it was determined that in order to fully assess Her Highness's condtion it would be necessary to take her temperature, Her Highness discovered her voice and shared the Song of Her People loudly and clearly to the enjoyment of all in attendance. The lyrics of the song were unclear, but the emotion of the melody was undeniable.

The Official diagnosis is something completely unpronouncable by the Queen, but which the Royal Scribes interpreted to mean "a really bad upset stomach." After a few days of recuperation and the regular administration of several medications, Her Royal Highness is expected to make a full recovery.

Thank you Lady Jordan and Dr Tim!”

It’s National Dog Biscuit Day!!! 🐶🦮🐾❤️

🐶 It's one of your dog's favorite days of the year - National Dog Biscuit Day! On a day like this, it's important to remember that more treats does not equal more love. In moderation, biscuits are an acceptable treat, but a healthy weight is most important to your dog's overall health.

It was such a delight to see precious little Luna today!

Luna’s dad brought her in for her 3rd set of puppy vaccinations and a monthly Simparica Trio tablet which will protect her against fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms.

We’re looking forward to seeing this sweet little girl in about 3 weeks for her last set of puppy shots….and an extra dose of puppy cuddles! ❤️

It was great to see Vera and her sweet family again! This beautiful brindle girl is one of the lucky dogs who was adopted from the Hernando Animal Shelter last year.

Vera’s family originally only intended to foster her for a short while, but she quickly won a permanent place their hearts & their lives.

We love to see our patients from the shelter get their “Happily Ever After” lives, often going from illness and injury to health and a beautiful future with a loving, permanent family.

Vera’s family brought her in for her Proheart shot today, which provides the best protection available against heartworm disease.

We’re so happy for Vera and very grateful to her adoptive family for taking such great care of her!
