Everything came together on this young ladys first hunt. She got her first deer. Used her brand new rifle that was her Christmas gift, and got a beautiful Union county 8 point. Congratulations to 12-year-old Sawyer Carlin. Way to go!

Rifle season is opening this weekend. Just a reminder to anyone wanting to have their deer mounted. Leave plenty of cape at least to the middle of the deer as today's newer forms are getting longer. Just check out the diagram as a reference. Just cut the leg off behind the knee, stay up the back of the leg to the belly, go around. After skinning it down it's a good idea to leave about 4 in of neck muscle for a good measurement. Anyone hunting out of state and having to cape their own, check out a YouTube video for help or give me a call. Skin measurements aren't as accurate as carcass measurements so check out the diagram used when ordering a form. Take B and C measurements after you skin it. Those are the basic measurements. I take several more for mounting. Message me or call me if you think you may want me to mount it. I may ask you to get a few more measurements. Keep the hide dry and cold. If you can't get it to me in a couple of days freeze it. Lay the hide up over the face and double bag it. I will be taking a limited number this year so get it to me pretty soon if you think you might want it mounted. Good luck to all and be safe.

Here is a giant of an eight point from our mountains. One of many taken by Dean Tucker in Towns County. Mounted on a McKenzie 64U semi sneak form. This is probably his best in this county. Not a lot of spread but really long points. Gross score of around 136. Won't lose much in the net score so probably be in the top five in the county. First buck I ever mounted for him was when I was learning roughly 35 years ago. Most of my practicing and improving was on his deer. Hopefully I have improved a little since then. He's still knocking down the big ones.
Congratulations old friend 🦌🦌🦌

Here's another big ole bear from Union county taken by former taxidermist Richard Griggs. Didn't have the exact weight but over 350 lb. He was about too big for my backdrop in the pictures. This is a detailed artificial mouth installed in a McKenzie charging pose. This is what you will get if we don't use the real teeth. We did a European mount with the skull so the teeth were not available. Congratulations Richard.

Leif Ekeberg got it done with a couple of nice North Georgia mountain bucks from Union county. The larger 8 point taken on public land is a form I haven't used before, a Matt Thompson 9500 extreme sneak. A unique pose looking downwards. The smaller eight point taken on private land is a McKenzie 8400 semi upright.
Congratulations Leif. 🦌🦌

Bow season is already upon us this weekend. Just a reminder to bear hunters, I will be tagging bears for the DNR again this year. Just call or message, I can meet you most anytime 7 days a week. A few tips on handling your bear if you want to have it mounted. Get it cooled down as soon as you can. Keep it as dry as you can. Don't let the ice melt all over it and soak it in water. If possible spread the hide out in a freezer until it's cooled down before you roll it up. Bear hides trap heat. Bacteria can develop quickly. If you want a half body mount give me a call before you skin it. Depending on the form you want will decide how I cut it. If not, try to turn the legs inside out cut them off at the elbow. Don't cut the inside of the legs and down the middle of the chest unless you are just wanting to tan the hide. It's a lot of unnecessary sewing and not always easy to hide the stitches. Here is a picture I found online as a good example of caping a deer for a shoulder mount, a bear can be done the same. I have had capes cut too short and briskets split. Hopefully this photo will help. Also on the deer get them in a freezer as soon as possible. Don't let them hang for days. If you can get it to me within a couple of days should be okay, if not freeze it. When you freeze it roll the face and ears up inside the hide and double bag it and it will last a long time without freezer burn. Leave a few inches of the neck muscle on it for a good measurement. Also for you out of state hunters that have to cape your head out due to the CWD regulations, if you want it mounted give me a call so we can get good measurements. I will probably post this again right before rifle season for the deer. Good luck to all and be safe.
