Brown County Humane Society, Kansas Our Mission Statement: the purpose of this society is the prevention of cruelty to animals. All members and the public are encouraged to attend.

BCHS meetings are held at 6:00pm the 3rd Monday of each month at the shelter, 2393 Mallard Rd., Hiawatha, KS . Come and find out our current activites and share your ideas with us. Spay & Neuter Program:
Early in 2010 BCHS members decided to seek funding for a spay/neuter program for overpopulation in Brown County. Our members visited with the community leaders in every town in Br.Co and also Tri

bal authorities, We heard the same thing from everyone "Pet overpopulation is a big problem in our community." The spay/neuter program became a reality when we received a donation from the Sac & Fox Tribe specifically for spaying and neutering pets. Then in July of 2010 BCHS was notified that our spay/neuter grant application to a private foundation had been approved and we were awarded a grant for the sterilization of dogs. The funds from both Sac&Fox and the grant were used to offer reduced cost sterilization of pets owned by families that can not afford the full cost. We believe the Spay/Neuter programs were a huge success and we plan to apply for addidtional grants to allow us to continue to offer assistance. Policy on Animals:
We currently accept stray animals brought in by animal control or police authorities from Hiawatha and surrounding communities. The shelter does not accept owner-surrender cats. This means an animal someone owns and they are choosing to get rid of them. However, there are instances when a family simply cannot keep their pet. Humanes society members try to locate homes and work with applicable rescue organizations that might accept them. The rescue groups that BCHS works with are great organizations that do their very best to ensure these animals go only to responsible new owners that will give the pet loving homes. Wish list:

Collars (all sizes)
Toys- espescially for puppies and kittens
Flea & Tick treatment- for dogs and cats (all sizes) Donations are limited to Frontline or Advantix brand only. Dog food, dry & canned (Pedigree preferred)

She is still timid around some men and spooks easily if someone moves too fast but goodness she is a complete different dog! She LOVES to give hugs and when you win her over, she follows you everywhere! And… you don’t have to carry her out to the bathroom now - she walks well on a leash! 🤣☺️ She is good with most dogs - there is a random one she isn’t a fan of but that’s ok! We are friends with every human we meet in life! 🙂 She does have a prey drive so cats could be an issue.
She is as imperfectly PERFECT as they come! 🩷
Someone PLEASE step up and be her HERO!!!

This post is about one of Mary Todd’s cute boys “Jimmy “Carter”..
This cute pup was adopted along with Mary Todd but both were returned to BCHS a couple months ago due to a life change with the family! “Carter” is an oversized “hippo” pup who doesn’t realize he is close to 70lbs - he thinks he’s still a cuddly 10 lb babe! He needs a family who will be patient yet firm and teach him some manners. He is such a happy go lucky 9-10 month old pup tho who deserves a 2nd or should we say 3rd chance.. ♥️

Mary Todd is safe but is so shut down. She doesn’t walk on a leash and is carried out to the bathroom. She shows no emotion in the beginning but we don’t give up on her. If you look closely at her neck right behind the pink shelter identification “collar” you can see a thing line of missing hair. That is a scar she has today yet from something being wrapped around her neck too tight - we know nothing about her past life but assume she was most likely just tied out in her previous life and didn’t know love.

Mary Todd ended up in the OKC shelter last June and was scheduled for euthanasia along with her lil 3 day old babies. We were asked if we could help.. How could one say no to the pic below? 💔 We stepped up and saved her and her sweet babes! 🩷
This is rescue and we believed Mary Todd and he babies deserved a chance at a happily ever after!

Today was a good day! ♥️ I reached out to over 50 puppy adopters from 2024 about our spay/neuter contract and whether their pups had been to the vet for sterilization? And guess what?? Over 40 adopters already have their pups spayed and neutered or have it scheduled per their vet’s recommendation! 👏🏼
Tomorrow I’ll reach out to the last handful of adopters!

What an awesome morning!!!! ☀️
Here’s the pupdate everyone’s been waiting all day for!!! Kahlua’s 6 pups and Rylee (German Shep) are off to a new adventure in Wyoming!!! Thanks to Pilot Lindsey with Pilots N Paws ✈️🐾, the trip wasn’t quite as long! 🥰 These 7 canines traveled by private plane to a volunteer who drove them a couple hours (thanks Carol!), then traveled by paid transport for close to 4 hours before finally meeting the rescue who stepped up for them - thanks Hero's Legacy Rescue !!! Tomorrow Rylee will meet her new family in Wyoming - she just hopped a ride today with the pups! ♥️
We are sooo THANKFUL for everyone’s help today!!! Happy Tailwags sweet pups and Rylee!!! 🥰

Flower and Shelah, both retired mamas, are feeling like pups again after their heartworm treatment (Shelah) and ACL repair surgery (Flower)! 🤩 These two mamas would LOVE a forever home and are soooo SWEET - definitely a couple of my favorites!!! 🩷
