Sometimes Man’s Best Friend Needs Dog’s Best Trainer
Even the greatest dog can have behavior problems, either because he wasn’t trained at all or he wasn’t trained correctly. My name is Quinn Collatt, and I’m not just some guy who loves dogs (although I do!) I am certified by the Animal Behavior College, an internationally recognized, year-long program. I have also attended many hours of dog work
shops and seminars that taught me how to understand canine behavior, communicate clear expectations, and train your dog to be not only a loving companion, but a well-behaved member of your household. Dogs are social creatures; they crave structure and firm yet gentle authority. I have the education, experience, and patience to make a real difference in your dog’s life, helping you and your canine friend spend many happy years together. It’s also love and understanding of the animal, and I will give your dog all that and more. Don’t spend another day frustrated by a destructive or unruly dog. Contact me today and let me help your dog learn to be a delightful companion.

Davy Jones has completed our day training program!
We focused a lot on building his confidence and desensitizing him to different sounds and environments. He’s not “fixed,” but he’s made significant progress—not just in obedience, but in his confidence, too. His owner now has the knowledge, tools, and confidence to continue his training at home.
Davy will continue coming back regularly to maintain his progress and keep working on staying confident outside his home.
🌟 We deeply appreciate the support of our amazing clients! 🌟 The feedback not only helps us improve but also motivates us to continue providing the best training possible. 🐶 Thank you for being a valued part of the Quinntastic Dog Training family! 🙏

Stella had her first training trip today at !
She tried to pull toward things to sniff, but with a verbal reminder of her heel command and a tap on the E-Collar, she quickly got back into position, and we continued through the store. She sat calmly while the staff pet her and complimented how well-behaved she was, and even settled herself into a down while I looked at treats and checked out.
Fantastic first field trip!

Toby just completed our puppy program!
While he didn’t have any major issues beyond the usual pesky puppy behaviors, his owners wanted to establish solid foundational skills early on so they could enjoy having Toby as a stress-free part of the family. Our puppy program covers basic obedience, safe socialization, desensitization, and provides the essential structure and consistency puppies need to thrive! Toby has been excelling at home and is even playing appropriately with his human brothers—no more nipping or jumping!

Leo completed our day training program!
His owner sought help with his anxious behaviors like excessive whining, barking, and overall listening skills. We introduced the place command to teach Leo how to relax on his own and built his confidence with regular outings to pet-friendly places, exposing him to a variety of people, animals, and environments. We also worked on his leash manners, ensuring he walks calmly beside his owner without zigzagging, eliminating the risk of becoming a tripping hazard.

We always encourage clients to feel the stim on ECollars so they know what their dog is experiencing. People are usually amazed by the sensation, as they often expect a real shock. It’s reassuring for them to realize they’re not hurting their dog, with many saying, ‘I’m glad to know I’m not hurting them.’ The stim is a mild tactile form of communication to help your dog understand that even when they’re off-leash, sniffing, and 30 yards away, they still need to listen to you. Curious if an ECollar is right for you and your dog? We’d love to chat with you about it! If your dog barks at the sound of knocking or the doorbell, here’s a method to help them stop. Have someone ring the doorbell or knock on the door while you reward your dog, regardless of whether they bark. This isn’t about rewarding the barking; it’s about conditioning your dog to associate the sound with a reward. Over time, your dog will start expecting a reward instead of reacting with barking. The reward can be anything your dog finds reinforcing, such as treats, toys, or affection. Just make sure it’s something of high value! If you won’t be home for a large portion of the day, try out this method instead: set up a video or sound of doorbells and knocking on a speaker or your TV at a low volume. Let it play in the background throughout the day. As your dog becomes more comfortable with the noise, gradually increase the volume until it can be played at a fairly loud level without triggering a reaction. Need help with your dog? The command is “Sit,” not “sit sit sit sit sit sit.” Say the command once. If your dog responds, praise them. If not, follow through and ensure they complete the command. With repetition and consistency, your dog will learn that you expect them to comply the first time you ask. By not following through, you’re allowing your dog to ignore you. They learn that you don’t mean it until the umpteenth time, when you start getting frustrated, which is usually when people finally follow through. It doesn’t have to be a big deal: “Fido, sit.” If they don’t, hold upwards on the leash until they do. “Fido, down.” If they don’t, apply downward pressure on the leash until they do. “Fido, come.” If they don’t, go and get them with a leash. Stay calm, be clear, fair, and consistent! Wish your dog would listen the first time? We can help with that! I wasn’t expecting this dog to react, but Pluto handled it well! When you pass a reactive dog, stay calm and keep your focus on your own dog. Be confident and in control. I knew we weren’t in any danger, so I didn’t make a big deal out of the interaction. I kept my pace, asking Pluto to keep up when he slowed down and to slow down when he sped up. I didn’t tighten the leash when approaching or passing the other dog, even when it started reacting. By staying calm, Pluto understood he didn’t need to worry in this situation because I had it under control. Is your dog reactive? We can help with that! Place means place! This ‘walkout’ exercise is to help solidify a dog’s place command. Once we’re certain the dog has a good understanding of the place command, we start upping the distractions! Not having anyone in the room to reinforce or correct the dog is a great test to see how solid their stay is. Good job, Maggie, Xena, and Dakota (blocked by Xena😂)! Would your dog stay in place if you went out of sight? Need dog training help? Set up your free consult via the link in our bio, and let’s get started! #dogtrainer #dogtraining #placecommand
Wish your dog did this instead of barking and charging at the door when someone knocks or rings the doorbell? Any time there’s knocking or the doorbell rings, it usually means someone is here, which can be very exciting or scary (depending on the dog). You need to teach them that the sound means nothing. Play sounds on a speaker, or the TV, or have a someone go outside and make noise, rewarding calm and quiet behavior. Need help desensitizing your dog to the sound of the doorbell and knocking? Tired of your dog jumping on you or others? Stop rewarding them for it! Petting your dog when they jump on you is reinforcing the jumping, meaning your dog will dog it more often because it leads to affection. Instead of petting your dog while they’re jumping, don’t pet them until they show your desired greeting behavior. Keep a leash on your dog during situations you know your dog tends to jump, and don’t allow them to practice the behavior anymore. This is where a place command can come in handy, if your dog’s not proficient with place yet, you can try the “settle the dog” exercise instead (check out our “Off Switch” reel for a how to). Need help teaching your dog appropriate greeting behaviors? Click the link in our bio, or DM us for the link, to set up your free consult today and let’s get started! Demand barking can be a hard habit to break. By rewarding your dog for this behavior, it’ll continue and likely get worse. So, how do you stop it? Ignore it. Wait for your dog to exhibit a behavior you want, and reward them for that. Once you establish the habit of only rewarding your dog for desired behaviors such as X, Y, or Z, you’ll notice them offering those behaviors more frequently, as they know it’s what earns them rewards, and the frequency of demanding behaviors will start to decrease. Disclaimer: Everyone has different expectations of their dog, so if this doesn’t apply to you, then disregard this post. #dogtrainer #dogtraining #demandbarking #bernedoodle
Letting your dog out of the kennel when they’re in the middle of demand barking, pawing, or biting the door rewards those behaviors with freedom. Essentially, you’re telling your dog, ‘This is the behavior that gets you out of the kennel.’ Consequently, you’ll notice them practicing these behaviors more frequently, sometimes the moment they set foot in the kennel, because it’s what gets results. Only releasing your dog from the kennel when they’re calm and settled teaches them that this is the secret password to freedom. Once they grasp this concept, you’ll see them settling down more quickly because they understand it’s the pathway to getting out. As they learn to settle in the kennel, your dog will start associating the kennel with rest and relaxation. Yes, it’s frustrating and inconvenient to let them work through it. However, if you want your dog to be kennel trained, you have to convey that being noisy won’t get them anywhere. You should be fulfilling all your dog’s needs while they’re out of the kennel: physical and mental stimulation. If you’re doing this, when it’s time to be kenneled your dog should be tired and ready to rest. This will make it easier for them to settle. #dogtraining #kenneltraining #cratetraining #teachyourdogtosettle #offswitch #settling #cratetrainingtips
Sometimes dogs need that correction to let them know this isn’t what you’re supposed to be doing. Occasionally dogs like to push boundaries and see how much they can get away with, especially in adolescence. It’s best to address these sometimes pesky behaviors as soon as they start so it doesn’t become a habit. Only correct your dog for doing this if you’re sure they understand what you’re asking of them. #dogtrainer #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraining101
Make sure you do your training homework! Reinforce the good behaviors and correct the bad or unwanted behaviors. Of course, your dog is going to excel when a trainer is handling them; we know how to communicate with the dog in a way they can understand. That’s why we want to meet with clients as frequently as possible – to teach you how to effectively communicate with your dog! #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingthoughts #trainyourdog #reinforcement
Too often people are wrapping the leash around their hand/arm and only giving the dog a few inches of leash. How can we know if your dog understands what we want from them if they’re having constant tension on the leash or have no room to make a different choice? Especially dogs who are going/have been through our training, we want owners to give their dogs slack in the leash. We want to be sure your dog understand the expectations on walks: stay next to me even though you have room to pull. Does your dog pull on the leash? We can help with that! Did you know that allowing your puppy to practice undesirable behaviors because they’re small and cute can make things harder for you in the long run?Allowing your puppy to:• Mouth/bite you, kids, grandma• Jump on everyone/everything freely• Pull/bark/lunge towards other dogs or people on leashteaches them that these behaviors are acceptable.Sure, it may seem harmless when they’re small and adorable, but what happens when your tiny puppy grows into a full-grown dog? Suddenly, the jumping isn’t so cute because they’ve injured someone, the mouthing isn’t so cute because they haven’t learned people aren’t chew toys, and the pulling on the leash becomes a struggle. If you don’t want your adult dog to do something, don’t allow them to practice it as a puppy. It’s much easier to form good habits early on than to break them when your dog is older. While not impossible, it will likely be more challenging and time-consuming.Start your puppy on the right path by teaching them appropriate behaviors and good habits from a young age!Need help setting your puppy up for success? Why do dog trainers always emphasize structure? Adding structure to your dog’s life helps them understand that you are in charge and the decision-maker. Dogs thrive on consistency, routine, and structure. When we say ‘your dog needs more structure,’ we don’t mean you should become a dictator and turn your dog into a robot. What we actually mean is having consistent rules, boundaries, leadership, and guidance. Structure means your dog can rely on you to handle situations in your home and out in the world. Structure can help reduce their stress levels (excitement/fear), which can be a root cause of many behavior problems. When a dog can rely on a routine and knows that someone else (you!) will take care of everything for them, they begin to learn to calm down and stop overreacting. Dogs, especially those with separation anxiety, fear, aggression, and other behavioral issues, benefit greatly from structure. These behaviors can be reduced or eliminated completely by setting up consistent rules that your dog can rely on. Having clear, unbreakable rules for dogs is extremely helpful, as dogs thrive on clarity. Consistent patterns and expectations create a sense of security and increase calmness in dogs. #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingthoughts #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #structure #doglife
Don’t forget to praise your dog! Too often we’re telling our dogs more ‘no’ or ‘stop that’ rather than praising them. Of course, tell your dog to stop doing something they shouldn’t be doing, but don’t forget to praise them when they make good choices! You may soon be finding your dog making more good choices because they get more positive outcomes from it. #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingthoughts #praiseyourdog #rewardyourdog #gooddog
Don’t make a habit of calling your dog off of place! They can start anticipating the recall command, making them more likely to break their place command. I called Chip off place, and afterwards every time I tried to walk away, he wanted to follow me. He was expecting me to call him again, so he thought he’d beat me to the punch and just come with me. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever call your dog to you from place; just don’t make it a habit. We teach all training dogs a release cue. ‘Free’ means you’re finished with the command; you can now do whatever you want. We use this to release dogs from sit and down stays, place, and on walks so they can sniff around or go to the bathroom. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #dogtraining101 #dogtrainingisfun #puppytrainingtips #puppytrainingadvice #puppytraining101 #puppytraining
Reward your dog for engaging with you instead of reacting to other dogs passing by. Set yourselves up for success by stepping off the path, have your dog sit, and rewarding them throughout the duration of the other dog passing by. As your dog improves, gradually work towards walking past other dogs. Take your time and aim for as many successful repetitions as possible! Still need help with your reactive dog?
