Founder vs Abscess 🐴
>>>Both founder and hoof abscesses can cause lameness in horses, but they are very different conditions!
~Founder is often linked to high sugar intake, such as from too much grass, and can result in irreversible damage of the coffin bone if left untreated. Horses that have foundered before are more prone to it happening again. With fall upon us, the cooler nights, sunny days, and recent rain can cause a growth spurt in grass, making founder a bigger risk.
~On the other hand, a hoof abscess is a condition that causes a pus filled pocket which creates pressure and pain. They are usually easily treatable with good outcomes.
>>>Knowing the difference is key! If your horse shows any signs of lameness, don't wait to call!⚕️
