When a big tomcat like this strolls in, we can't help but marvel at the numbers! 🐾 A single tomcat can father hundreds of kittens in his lifetime, and females can have up to 280! Talk about feline family trees! 🌳🐈 This is why spaying and neutering is so important—to help manage those impressive numbers and keep the cat community healthy!

Last but certainly not least Henry River's OG tech Marisa!
She has been with the practice since 2017 as the only tech then after COVID she moved into being our receptionist/office manager so she could homeschool her children. When we say this woman does it all we aren't joking (I don't remember work life before Marisa!)!!! Thanks for keeping everything running smoothly! She has started being in the truck again Fridays and we know clients are stoked to see her out and about again. Be sure to wish her a happy tech week when you talk to her on the phone 💗

🚨 Just a reminder: Fallen and wilting Red Maple leaves are highly toxic to horses if ingested! 🍁 Red Maple trees have distinctive bright red or reddish-brown leaves in the fall, with 3-5 pointed lobes and serrated edges. If you spot these leaves, clear them from pastures to keep your horses safe!

Rabies 🦠

*Important things to know about rabies that you may not have known *

💉North Carolina law requires that all cats and dogs must be rabies vaccinated and HIGHLY recommends that all large animals also be vaccinated.
💉The only way to test for rabies is by performing a necropsy
💉Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal usually by a bite or scratch
💉Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease that can be passed to humans

Make sure all your animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines to keep them safe!

Founder vs Abscess 🐴

>>>Both founder and hoof abscesses can cause lameness in horses, but they are very different conditions!

~Founder is often linked to high sugar intake, such as from too much grass, and can result in irreversible damage of the coffin bone if left untreated. Horses that have foundered before are more prone to it happening again. With fall upon us, the cooler nights, sunny days, and recent rain can cause a growth spurt in grass, making founder a bigger risk.
~On the other hand, a hoof abscess is a condition that causes a pus filled pocket which creates pressure and pain. They are usually easily treatable with good outcomes.

>>>Knowing the difference is key! If your horse shows any signs of lameness, don't wait to call!⚕️

We’re thrilled to introduce the newest member of our team, Dr. Claire Bublitz Giles!

Dr. Claire grew up in Matthews, NC, and pursued her passion for animals at NC State University, where she earned a degree in Zoology before continuing to achieve her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with a focus on Food Animal Medicine. She most enjoys practicing ruminant medicine, and she has a special fondness for goats and sheep.

Outside of work, Dr. Claire enjoys spending quality time with her husband and their dog, Ivy. You’ll often find them exploring the great outdoors on a hike or enjoying cozy moments on the couch. She also loves staying active through running and working out, and when it’s time to unwind, she’s an avid reader.

Please join us in giving Dr. Claire a warm welcome to the HRMVS team!!
